1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Was fast and worked well.

Cons: After about 2 months, it stopped working properly. It only blue screen now. It will run for 5 minutes and then blue screen. I've reinstalled windows and it doesn't help. I've gone back to my old HDD because it works properly. I had it for just long enough that I can't send it back to get it fixed (Crucial troubleshooting made me take just long enough) so now I'm the proud owner of a $240 paperweight.

3 out of 5 eggsSSD Cruial

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Its a SSD so the load times are shorter than HD drive

Cons: Crucial SSD cant Raid with 990fx motherboards. No one has come up with the right driver to install so Windows can see the raid setup. Bios set raid just fine!

Other Thoughts: If any one has m4a99fx pro r2.0 and has raid 0 with crucial 240 Gb M500 SSD running in windows go to crucial web forums and put it on there so maybe all of us can get it Raid up and running.

2 out of 5 eggsHas Linux Issues..

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Great price and speed.

Cons: All Crucial M500 drives have been blacklisted in new Linux O/S versions. The Queued Trim operation for these drives have been automatically disabled by the Linux kernel because the Queued Trim operation leads to data corruption in them. No Trim operation means reduced/slow write speeds! This has been a known issue for several months now so think twice if you are planning on using Linux with this drive.

Other Thoughts: Not sure if Queued Trim is working or is being used properly in Windows XP/7/8/8.1 either.. so maybe check into this before purchasing to see if the problem applies here too.

5 out of 5 eggsSteady as she goes... fast

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast
Quiet

Cons: None noticed

Other Thoughts: This drive worked well hooked up with an Asus Sabretooth Mark 2. Very quick response, 7.8 Windows score until I had to add in the other barracuda storage drives, then dropped to 7.6.

5 out of 5 eggsAll things considered

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - NAND Flash is manufactured to high standards
- Uses a Marvell controller that emphasizes accuracy and consistency
- Excellent Price to Performance ratio
- See "Other Thoughts" Section

Cons: - Slightly slower than some other SSDs on the market
- No native data migration software. Though there are open-source options for this task

Other Thoughts: The NAND Flash used in this drive is produced at the same plants as the top-rated and much higher-priced Intel SSDs. Simply put, Intel and Crucial's parent company -Micron- jointly own factories in Utah, Virginia, and Singapore. Not only does this mean these SSDs are among the most reliable, but the Flash used has a 2 in 3 chance of being manufactured in the US. Singapore is also a leader in Labor protections among Asian nations, lagging behind only Japan and South Korea. This means this SSD is produced with Labor Ethics in mind. If that is important to you, then I strongly suggest this SSD.

The major difference between this SSD and an Intel SSD is the Controller. Intel buys exclusive rights to the highest-quality SandForce controllers, making their SSDs slightly faster but also much more expensive. As I stated in the "pro" section, the Marvell controller used here sacrifices some small amount of speed for what can be seen as a more methodical approach to the use of the flash memory. This then does not mean that the drive is inferior, just that it emphasizes reliability over speed. So, if you intend to have the fastest speeds by running RAID 0 or some other array, this may not be the drive for you.

Lately, other manufacturers have had some controversy over the switch to asynchronous NAND from synchronous NAND. There is no worry here, the Intel/Micro Flash has remained synchronous and consistent.

Recommended for:
- Virtually all uses, as an SSD is one of the best upgrades to make to any machine.
- People concerned with Labor practices associated with technology manufacturing.
Not Recommended for:
- Severe Use-Cases like 3D animation rendering, video editing or other such intensive tasks that would require top of the line performance.

5 out of 5 eggsSmokin!

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Simple, fast, no issues, RAID10

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Bought 4 of them plus dedicated 8 port SATA3 RAID controller. Needed 2Tb for image processing. Don't trust RAID0 (which isn't RAID), so I run them in RAID10 for speed and redundancy (because I believe anything can fail)
Old server was very bogged down with RAID10 of 1Tb 7200RPM HDDs while processing 500 image per minute (300,000 images per day) - barely keeping up. New server with SSDs can process nearly 2000 image per minute.

5 out of 5 eggsFast & reliable, good size

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I wanted to buy an SSD that could store my OS and a few games on for quick boot up. So far I love this thing - it boots up my OS in no time at all. Restarting used to be a pain with an HDD, but now I know it'll take less than 30 seconds that it doesn't even matter.

It also 100% makes a difference in games. Before on my laptop I used to be one of the last ones to join the server, but now I'm always the first one (if not second). The speed is so amazing that I'm in love with SSDs now. I also copied files over to my HDD and it was moving at a rate of 230MB/sec - UNBELIEVEABLE BUBBA!

If you're a gamer or just hate waiting, I'd suggest getting any SSD. This one works really well and I like the 240gb size. It'll accommodate a lot of large programs/games so it'll make your life better. You probably want a mix between SSD & HDD (one for programs you use a lot, another just for back up storage).

Cons: I guess it's not the fastest SSD out there, but I bet the difference is probably a second or two in start up.

5 out of 5 eggsScarey fast & so far reliable!

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Price
Reliable name
Speed

Cons: No SATA cable included.

Other Thoughts: I used this SSD to replace my current WD 7200rpm 500gig drive. Absolute best thing I've EVER done to speed up a system and I've been building my own systems since the early 90's!!
I used a procedure to clone my current hdd to my new MX100 ssd. Overall the whole procedure probably took less than 1 hour. Once I was able to boot up from my new MX100 I was thoroughly impressed!!
My boot time with a 2.9ghz AMD Quad-core, 4gigs of high speed ram is ~25-27 seconds from power on to when I can click on something in Windows 7.
When I click on my Chrome icon, that is instantly loaded...and that includes any tabs I may have left opened from the last time I closed it.
I play Star Wars: The Old Republic. With my hhd, it was about a 3-4 minute load time. It's very hard drive dependent. With my new ssd, <1 minute!! And it's virtually seamless with game loads within SWTOR!!
The only con I noted is it didn't include a SATA cable but I didn't take an egg away from that. A good home builder always keeps those in supply. Was just surprised to not find one in there. So keep that in mind if you order this gem!

I am considering the 512gb version of this drive later down the road. You can't go wrong with this drive. Just do yourself a favor & order one (or more). You won't be sorry!
