5 out of 5 eggsM500 ssd

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: Fast, so far no failures overall seems to be a good value

Cons: not the fastest ssd around, but then my motherboard doest support sata 600

Other Thoughts: purchased several for various friends and family and havent had any break down yet, nor have the prior m4 ssds that ive owned, so far im liking.

5 out of 5 eggsCrucial M500 960GB

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: 1TB lots of storage. I used it to put steam games on. Game loading has never been faster, except when they were on my Samsung 840 Pro (according to benchmarks). However, I cannot tell the difference for game loading.

Cons: Does not come with a 3.5" adapter or SATA6G cable. Color of the case (light blue, does not match my ASUS RIVE, but oh well) Price. If you compare prices with 1TB mechanical hard drive the price is about 7 times of that.

Other Thoughts: You bought this for a purpose. You know it is expensive. However, if you do the math, it is cheaper (I got it at Black Friday sale) then either 256GB or 512GB. Now I don't have to worry about upgrade or space for all my steam games.

5 out of 5 eggsLike it so well I bought another one!

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: This is a large capacity drive for an affordable price, performs with relatively fast speeds, especially compared to a traditional HDD, and offers the durability of true MLC memory. It is also a 7mm thickness drive which allows greater flexibility in mounting in laptops and netbooks which call for this thinner form factor. There are only two 1TB class drives in this category. This is one of them as is the Samsung 840 EVO.

Cons: I can't really think of anything major. You don't get the full 1TB out of this drive where you do get that out of the Samsung 840 EVO. This drive is also a little slower than the 840.

Other Thoughts: This and the Samsung 840 EVO are the only two 1TB class drives in this category. I chose this drive because of its usage of more tried and true two layer MLC memory rather than Samsung's TLC (triple layer) memory which isn't know for as long of a life as MLC. I understand this isn't as big of a problem in real world tests as the drives wear-level themselves and wearing out a 1TB drive would take forever. The 840 is also supposed to be a slightly faster unit. This isn't the fastest SSD out there but it is still light years ahead of any mechanical SSD, especially when being used as a data drive. I would suggest this unit to anyone looking for a 1TB class SSD!

5 out of 5 eggsGet Your Facts Straight ...

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: Excellent Performance

Cons: None ...

Other Thoughts: A negative review of these drives makes this statement:

"They advertise this as a "feature": Adaptive Thermal Protection

Translation: "We slow down the disks as soon as they reach 40 °C (Celsius), degrading performance to 50% and throttling beyond to prevent overheat"."

For the record, SSD drives don't have disks, so there is nothing to slow down. Heat characteristics are similar to RAM for this sort of device. I'm not certain regarding this particular feature, but it's more likely to be similar to a heat sync in terms of the technology. There really isn't any analog to disk processes that impact performance to handle heat.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a great SSD!

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: A great SSD - not the fastest around but I'm getting good 400+/500+ write/read speeds. I replaced my 512GB Crucial m4 series with this drive so I could have some room for some music on my MacBook Pro. Easy to install, simple setup, quick clone and I was up and running.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you've an 'older' MacBook Pro (non Retina) this is a great upgrade for a fast, affordable, easy maintenance SSD.

2 out of 5 eggsKeep it cold

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: High capacity for casual storage

Cons: They advertise this as a "feature": Adaptive Thermal Protection

Translation: "We slow down the disks as soon as they reach 40 °C (Celsius), degrading performance to 50% and throttling beyond to prevent overheat".

I ran a lot of tests for this, starting copying up to 400MB/s, and then (after <30secs) the speed suddenly drops to 200MB/s and goes down < 50MB/s... the disk speed goes back to full 400 MB/s as soon as the disk gets cold

I think this was fixed with MU03 firmware update, it says "Provide the ability to disable the temperature throttling function", but doesn't mention how doing it.

Other Thoughts: I am returning the disks.

5 out of 5 eggsInitial review with comments

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: Fast, reliable startup, quick set up, great value for the size, no issues so far (less than a month)

Cons: Slightly less storage than the competition

Other Thoughts: This is a Newegg comment not a Crucial comment, but be aware of the prices available because I had a few weeks of back and forth with customer service when a competitor started up some pricing wars during black Friday/cyber Monday sales. Newegg did finally come through and credited my account but would not meet the competitor's price based on a "A-mazons prices are below our cost", which I can understand. They only refunded me to match their current price. So while I would rate their response as a five star I would add that "Ironegg" price guarantee is not "Ironclad". Read the fine print.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD for the price!

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: This is a great drive for the money. I was looking for a drive with at least 3k PE cycles for a data drive in an SSD and decided upon this one. There are only two drives in this size and price range. The other is a Samsung 840 1TB but it is a TLC with 1.5k write cycles. This is also one of the few SSDs of this capacity that are 7mm thick so they will fit inside netbooks and other systems that call for this slim form factor.

Cons: Could be faster but is still very nice for a drive of this size and price range so I shouldn't complain.

Other Thoughts: I decided to spring for a secondary SSD as a data drive to replace a 1TB mechanical "spinner" hard drive. This drive isn't expected to get a ton of write cycles but I picked it over the 1TB Samsung 840 which uses TLC nand and has half the rated writes. While the Samsung will likely outperform this one, I picked the longevity of the M500 over the 840 and this is still a very fast data drive. I am using a PNY Prevail Elite 480GB with 10k rated write cycles as my primary drive as it takes the brunt of the writes.

I am a HUGE fan of SSDs and eventually see them replacing mechanical hard drives for most applications. I am replacing all mechanical hard drives, with the exception of backup drives, with SSDs in my home as finances allow. The only exception is one hard drive that is continuously recording video for a security camera that I don't want to hit an SSD with continuous writes.

4 out of 5 eggsM$ was better

This review is from: Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1

Pros: It's a SSD so PC is very speedy and fast.

Cons: I think the discontinued M4 series was a little fatser based on day to day usage.

Other Thoughts: These reviews are the same ones used for all M500 sizes, so not trustworthy anymore.
