5 out of 5 eggsAdditional Storage on Dell M4700

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT480M500SSD3 480GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very easy to install on a Dell M4700. As long as you know your way around Windows 7 Disk Management setup utility configuring and formatting is fast and easy.

I use the drive to store and run virtual machine images, along with backing up valuable files from the main SSD. Speed improvement is very visible compared to using an external USB 3 hard drive.

Cons: Can't think of any at the moment.

Other Thoughts: My M4700 is now all SSD and it was well worth the expense. The performance improvement is significant. If you are sitting on the fence about SSDs, buy one and you will never look back. Just be sure to get a back up routine in place. If an SSD fails you can kiss your data good bye.

5 out of 5 eggsFast little #*?@er

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT480M500SSD3 480GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, reliable, easy install, good price considering others in its class.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I came across these mSATA drives a little over a year ago and have been amazed with them ever since I had my Intel NUC boot windows 7 in under 20sec. I picked up a raid card and popped two of these bad boys in it and it's amazing, almost 1tb of space and it is lightening fast. Still have 2 empty slots which I going to fill with two more of these at well. For some reason every benchmark I have used has tested these faster than the Samsung drives I own. mSATA is the way of the future, just need to get the rest of the world to realize how amazing these chips really are.

Pros: 480GB of space in such a little package.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my NUC 54250WYKH1. Fit perfectly. Works perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat product

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT480M500SSD3 480GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Quick and easy install
fast speeds

Cons: a bit more expensive than its full size big brother.

Other Thoughts: I own a full M500 SSD and purchased this to replace the full sized drive. Speeds are great and after some Windows tweaking this thing is awesome. I highly recommend.

1 out of 5 eggsGot a bad one

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT480M500SSD3 480GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Love the form factor and thought it would be great with a Shuttle SZ87R6 - for my daughter's Christmas.

Cons: This one took plenty of investigating as I just couldn't believe the problem experienced was due to the SSD. I was having sudden power off episodes after installing the OS on this SSD, installed on a Shuttle SZ87R6. After changing out the power supply and then completely ordering a new SZ87R6, the sudden power offs persisted. But there was a pattern. I could format the drive and install the OS and it would be totally stable for awhile and then become completely unstable and then become unbootable. If I went around the SSD with say a Linux Live CD, the computer operated flawlessly. In addition, I ran CPU stress tests and Mem86 via bootable CD's and all ran great. I finally made the move to replace this drive with an EVO 850 and, thus far, it is stable as a rock. I'm not exactly sure why this SSD became so unusable, but it did. It may be a bad batch and I would be willing to send it to Crucial for analysis.

Other Thoughts: Never seen an SSD become unstable before and I looked at everything before coming to this conclusion.

5 out of 5 eggsGet one

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT480M500SSD3 480GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: small, low power, fast

Cons: None that I can find

Other Thoughts: I got one of these when I started doing some very disk intensive analysis work on my laptop. The improvement was amazing, and I immediately went from being disk limited to being processor limited. Perhaps the biggest improvement is that it now only takes a few seconds to start up or shut down the laptop. That is huge given the number of software updates we have to put up with each week.

It did not come with any installation software, so I used my imaging software (Acronis) to simply make a disk image, then rebuilt the SSD from the old image. Worked like a champ. The caveat here is that the disks were exactly the same size--went from a 500 GB WD mechanical to the 500 GB Crucial M500. There may be some other twist if you go to a smaller SSD from a larger hard drive.

Tip: buy the one that already comes sized for a hard drive slot. This is a mini SATA card--tiny, but it will cost you another $15 or so for an adapter. Should be the same price.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall and Fast

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT480M500SSD3 480GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Drives like this are what the mSATA interface has been waiting for. As much capacity and just as fast as mainstream 2.5" SSDs and less expensive than most of them. This gives mini-ITX boards with mSATA ports a big advantage.

Cons: The screws that hold mSATA drives down are tiny. The way mSATA slots work I suggest inserting the card, putting the screw(s) in the hole(s), then push it down and turn the screws. This isn't a problem with this part, so it does not affect its rating.

Other Thoughts: These really are small. You can't tell from the picture, but they are as wide as a standard memory stick is tall.
