1 out of 5 eggsSusceptible to heat

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model BLS2K8G3D18ADS3

Pros: Looking good? :D

Cons: I also have MSI mobos, MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming to be exact. These RAM sticks are sporadic and cause reboots, freezes, BSOD, you name it, under both Windows and Linux.

I've been using Crucial products for over 10 years. This one really drops the ball. Wasted so much of my time coz I thought something was wrong with the PSU or Motherboard. Slapped in 2 sticks of Corsair, never a hiccup.

Other Thoughts: To remedy the instability issue, they must be geared down one notch: 11-11-11-31, 2t, and must NOT mix with any other ram. That's the only way memtest won't spit error.

Nonetheless, Crucial's reputation is sunk for me. I'll be quite hesitant to purchase their products again.

3 out of 5 eggsGood, but not working with MSI Z97-G55

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model BLS2K8G3D18ADS3

Pros: Heatsink, fast speed

Cons: Causes crashes with MSI Z97-G55

Other Thoughts: I've tried several configurations for this memory but constantly get blue screen errors such as "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" even after testing timings, voltage, etc. Seems to just be incompatible. Interestingly, though, it works fine if only one stick is installed (does not matter which one.)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Ram so far

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model BLS2K8G3D18ADS3

Pros: Speed - and at the time price...got it for like 110 on sale + rebate

Cons: Cas Latency settings. HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THIS! just for people interested in this ram.

generally will take manual override of DHCP and cas speeds to make sure they are were they need to be.

Other Thoughts: waiting for them to go on sale again to bump up to 32gigs. Why? Because I can.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board but has some 64 bit issues

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model BLS2K8G3D18ADS3

Pros: Inexpensive board perfect for what I intended for it once I fixed the issues,(see cons)
6 sata ports
expandable to 32 gig memory
onboard gigabit ethernet

Cons: doesn't work out of the box with 64 bit linux distributions, IOMMU is a nightmare of a problem on this board. (see other thoughts for a fix)
Raid support is windows only, if you want raid for linux it will have to be software raid.

Other Thoughts: My setup:
OS: ubuntu 13.10 server
Motherboard: This board
Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148722
Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284
Graphics: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121712
HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148834
Power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153166
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353025

Now for those of you looking to use this for a Linux machine and aren't familiar with the ins and outs of making it work you may want to move on to a different board although if you follow the steps below it should be pretty straight forward.

The following guide was built off of my build of ubuntu 13.10 server mainly so I could setup software raid. But should work for the desktop version as well.

The known issues are that once booted into a 64 bit system USB2.0 and networking are not recongnized. It is an IOMMU issue, but leave the hardware IOMMU disabled in the bios.

Boot off install media, Make sure it is plugged in to one of the USB 3.0 ports.

Install your OS, use the 3.0 ports for keyboard and mouse as well, there is also ps2 connections on the board if you have them.

Skip setting up the network for now as no network adapter will be found.

Boot into the os, open a terminal, and then issue

sudo vi /etc/default/grub
not familiar with vi? use nano

on the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
add iommu=soft inside the quotes, the options are space separated so if there are any other options make sure that you leave a space between them. This causes the IOMMU to be handled in software instead of using the built in hardware IOMMU.

once that is completed reboot

now you will have to set up networking.

first figure out what your machine thinks is the network adapter.

sudo lshw -class network

This will list alot of information about the adapter, but the bit you are intersested in is the logical name line. On mine it was p9p1.

sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces

add the following lines, substitute whatever your logical names ends up being in for p9p1.

auto p9p1
iface p9p1 inet dhcp

restart networking

sudo service restart networking

now networking should be good and you should get a response from

ping google.com

if not reboot, if still not check the link light, still not? do a bit more research.

Now that you have networking you will probably want to issue a couple commands to update your packages.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Good luck!
