5 out of 5 eggsIt's like a brand new machine!

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This was an upgrade from a regular hard drive in a 4 year old sony vaio laptop. The difference is night and day - going from minute+ boot times from powered down (not to mention the additional time needed to load programs after reaching the desktop) to ~10 seconds to the desktop and instant loading thereafter.

Cons: It could be cheaper?

Other Thoughts: I've waited for a while to get into the SSD game (my preferred sweet spot was $100 per 256GB and this got close enough with recent deals that I had to jump on it (and glad I did).

2 out of 5 eggsAMD Chipset SATA controller does NOT support RAID!

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: 411MB min | 413MB Max | 412MB Average Read, full capacity test
302MB | 379MB | 376MB average write speed / 10GB test

In comparison to the 512GB Samsung drives that replace them the benchmarks tend to be a bit more stable/consistent as far as numbers goes visually however the fact of the matter is I needed these to support RAID 1 on the AMD SATA controller (trying to get RID of the PCI-Express addon cards (yes plural)) as the boot time gets killed with having two extra controllers.

Moderately fast in single drive mode, probably faster in RAID mode like the Samsung replacements when I tested RAID 0 though I wouldn't because...

Cons: First RAID and then HALVED read speeds...

These drives are NOT recognized in Windows 7 64 Bit on two different socket AM3+ 990FX motherboards: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5. 8350 CPU.

The UD5 has a separate internal controller with two ports that I'm using to boot from a 750GB Samsung SSD and my Blu-ray optical drive in AHCI mode. The AMD SATA controller sees these drives in RAID and the BIOS/UEFI see the RAID no problem. After numerous attempts (different ports, motherboards, wires (data/power), etc I called Crucial and the tech confirmed that it is a known issue with absolutely no ETA on a fix or IF there would be a fix.

READ SPEEDS were HALVED immediately after performing HD Tune Pro write test in single drive mode (again RAID won't work) down from a 412MB read average to 250MB average read speed. While relatively speedy not acceptable. I used the erase tab and was able to recover most of the read speed back to an extent but still that is ridiculous.

Other Thoughts: Rating two eggs because if it was one you'd skip this review just like how I read 2|3|4 egg reviews first.

My setup...
C:\ 750GB Samsung single SSD.
D:\ 512GB RAID 1 Samsung Pro, My Documents (reg hack with two users, thanks MS >__>)
E:\ 1.5TB RAID 1, old mass storage.
F:\ 4TB RAID 1, newer mass storage but grey screens in VLC so will replace with 5400/7200 RPM 4TB drives.

I like redundancy and speed. The Samsung drives just worked without any of the hassle and I had thought for years that motherboard controllers simply didn't competently support RAID.

I wasn't wild about spending the extra money for Samsung but the fact that they work is key and the performance is good. Would have opted for $200 more to double to 1TB RAID 1 but just can't stretch it that far just yet, the prices will keep coming down.

If you're looking for a single drive I'd still go with a different controller, I've bought nothing but SandForce based SSDs for clients (no RAID setups there yet) and after chancing it with the Samsung I'm happy with the performance and results.

My advice is that if you're squeezing your money to do a RAID to CALL the manufacturer first and ask them if there are any chipsets that the drives you are interested have any compatibility. Do NOT specify which chipset you have or CPU platform (AMD/Intel); always see if the tech knows what they're talking about and it could help save you losing the shipping costs and much worse, the time spent. I do appreciate the tech's honest answer. It *MIGHT* be a possibility that a firmware update has or will correct this issue though there were no firmware updates for my SPECIFIC model available on the official website. I do NOT know if the issue is with the SSD's Anand Tech reports this SSD's controller is a Marvell 88SS9189 for those who REALLY don't appreciate the controller not being listed here OR Crucial's website. SSD controllers are the video card memory interfaces of SSDs, relatively speaking.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Easy install, fast , great size, Crucial reliability! Price !

Cons: Went on sale soon after I bought it. Lost some space had 2 extra partitions when setting it up. This was my second drive the first one had the box had been opened and resealed with packing tape. I asked for replacement and the egg took care of it as always ! Thanks Newegg !!!

Other Thoughts: Hopefully it will be reliable Crucial has a rep for this it is fast has double the space and I like the boot times on it when teamed with my Asus Crosshair V 990FX mother board and UEFI bios.

5 out of 5 eggsFAST

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This SSD is fast! I cloned the 500GB OEM HD that came with my TOSHIBA P50t laptop on to this drive and the performance increase is awesome. I'm running windows 8.1Pro and my cold-start boot time is 7.5 seconds! I kid you not! Game & program load time is half what they were before.
I bought this drive during a 24hr sale and paid only $220 for it. So, price is a con.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsFirst SSD, Not My Last

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very fast compared to spinning disk. I don't really care about the stats and the raw throughput. I care that it boots from last BIOS screen to Windows 7 login in less than 18 seconds and there is not lag between opening a file or program and the way it jumps onto the screen.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Being my first personal SSD, I was a bit leery and poured over the specs for a few days before I decided on this one. It got good reviews and low DOA reports so I bought it. I've not had a lick of trouble out of it and it boots very quickly. If you need a 1/2 Tb drive, this is not a bad choice, especially if you can catch it on sale.

5 out of 5 eggsNeeds Windows 7 SP1 +

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, reliable, spacious, and reasonably priced.

Cons: If trying to install Windows 7 onto this drive I get an error that says something about setup cannot install Windows on this hardware configuration. When using Windows 7 with service pack 1 slip streamed into the installation it works fine. So it would seem WIndows 7 flat uses the incorrect hard drive driver for my computer (Dell Precision Workstation M6400). As a test Windows 8.1 Pro installs on this drive. Unfortunately there are no other 8.1 device drivers for my model laptop such as the one that controls power management.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic SSD

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: With OS installed on drive I ran benchmark tests, while only making minor tweaks to OS (TRIM, no defrag, so on so forth) ran around 500 read and 500 write.. very consistent. Have it installed in an ASUS gaming i7 laptop and have not had a single issue yet. have not noticed a "Huge" difference in battery life, but I can say it is at least a little better than before. With the lifespan of SSD's now I decided to put all applications (lightroom, photoshop, steam, office, so on so forth) all on the ssd, and all of them have seen significant improvements in launch and processing times.

My OS now boots after the ASUS MOBO splash screen in 6 seconds on windows 8.1, keep in mind this is not a fresh install. (used Acronis paid version to clone and re-partition)

Cons: Seems the price has increased since I bought it.
Can't think of any other cons.

Other Thoughts: Definitely a good SSD, would buy again.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Fast

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Great speed I can now fire up iphoto and it does not take 30 seconds to a minute to load my library. I have been using a poor performing Hitachi drive that has always tested fine but been iffy since day one. I wish I had upgraded sooner. I also wish I had never went with Hitachi on last drive update. If you are on the fence I think you would like this drive.

Cons: Not really any cons I think of as price is very good for an SSD but it would be nice to see the price of SSD's go down so they become the new standard.

Other Thoughts: I used SuperDuper! to move everything over so it was painless.

5 out of 5 eggshow amazing speed

This review is from: Crucial M550 CT512M550SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA 6Gbps MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The price was ok for what you get. I owned a 120gig intel 320 in 2011 and that was ok for the time. Now I got this ssd and it's night and day between the two drives. The m550 installed Windows 7 in 12 minutes from a thumb drive and installed all 140 updates from a thumb drive in 20 minutes including restarts.

Cons: price is still a little high per gig.
