2 out of 5 eggsDisk Check Errors

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast after it goes through disk check

Cons: Long boot time because of errors

Other Thoughts: Turn on the computer and it has to do a disk check and fix errors. Says fixed but does this every time a turn on computer.

5 out of 5 eggsFAST!!

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Easy install and Unbelievable speed increase on boot and shutdown as well as in-program access to and from the ssd. I didn't use the image software included in the box and opted instead for a fresh copy of Windows 7 and reload of my chosen games...and am Really impressed with the speed of this thing. It went from a 3 min boot to a 30 second boot with this ssd...WOW!

Cons: None to speak of so far.

5 out of 5 eggsCruicial & clone boot drive

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast! Seems solid (time will tell). The EZ-FIT Lite SSD bracket works well, except it takes screws vice the quick-fit connections to hold it in the rack.

Cons: Had to try various cloning programs to get it to "take." Using Backupper the system originally booted but then on reboot got a MBR not found error. Started over with Acronis True Image HD and it worked fine after procedure below. May have been user-error, but trying different software seemed like a good bet.

Other Thoughts: HHD boot drive was on a partition, so had to find software that would clone a partition, not just an entire disk. Saved disk image using several software packages. Clonezilla couldn't find saved image (perhaps because it was a Windows 7 GMA drive). Backupper worked by didn't restore image to entire drive (only to same size partition which was 180GB) so didn't utilize full drive capacity. Acronis True Image HD worked (despite language which suggests it only clones entire disk) and utilized full drive capacity including the 100MB system reserved area.

Make sure to prep the original HHD drive first using info from several online sites and Youtube videos. Make sure TRIM is enabled, defrag original HDD then turn off defraging for the boot drive, move any moveable user directories to another drive (include GoogleDrive and DropBox), etc. Then clone the system image by booting from a DVD with the SDD connected through USB and the original HDD unplugged. Acronis True Image HD took about 25 minutes to restore the entire system (Win7) from the saved image; boot drive and reserved area is about 72 GB in size and the image was about 50GB in size.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: None

Cons: Had two of these, both had lock up issues . Called Crucial, they confirmed both drives were defective. 2nd drive less than 30 days old, Newegg wants to give me a replacement, not a refund! If they want to lose the thousands I spend with them, give me a replacement!!!!! These drives are junk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat basic SSD

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Boots faster than my previous drive - a Samsung 840. I believe the 840's had firmware issues...not sure if they fixed those problems.

The Crucial MX100 has worked flawlessly from day one. Very happy with it.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Power consumption might be a little higher than other SSD's. You might want to check out some reviews before you choose one for your laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat way to speed up your system! Disk I/O makes a HUGE difference.

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Advertised speeds were realized on my rig; Dell Inspiron 3000 11" 2in1 (3148). Went in easily installed Fedora 21 perfectly.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great replacement for a old style disk. Disk I/O is the most "felt" speed ot lack thereof on a system in my opinion. If disk access is slow, the system can crawl. On the other hand, even an old system will seem to "fly" with an SSD.

4 out of 5 eggsCrucial 550 SSD 256GB

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: So far so good.
-My laptop speed increased dramatically. Exponentially. If you have basic IT knowledge and know an SSD will increase speed, take the extra time to learn how to make the SSD primary drive like I did with this solid state drive. Your games/media will not run as efficiently if you just add the SSD as a secondary drive.
-I can run certain games on full screen I could not before with my disk drive! :D
-Can boot in 7 seconds!!! WHOOOOO!

Cons: this is hardly a con (because I already knew what I was getting into) but no documentation included. Just a drive bay spacer included. Only added the website link for information on the box.
-Single and only major con: since using a Samsung Evo SSD (which includes Cloning software) I figured cloning the SSD would be easy. Not so much for me. Crucial encourages you to drop an extra $50 on Acronis HD to clone SSD to make primary drive. After trying to mount Microsoft Backup images without a recovery disc, ended with frustration and began research on free cloning software. Found MACRIUM REFLECT gets the job done, now I'm running like a dream.

Other Thoughts: Having this SSD as a primary drive, and using an optical adapter bay for my old disk drive (1 TB) makes for an amazing machine.

5 out of 5 eggsWow..

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast. Ridiculously fast. Good quality, and priced well.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: This has been my first experience with a SSD, and I cannot believe the difference it makes. Windows loads on my pc in about 4 seconds. It takes me longer to turn the backlight on, on my keyboard and type my password than it does to boot up.

4 out of 5 eggsFast performance, low-cost, unpolished drive

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: We purchased one of these drives to compare to the Samsung 840 and 850 drives we use in the majority of our laptops and workstations. From a speed perspective, there are no concerns. The Crucial drive more than holds its own against the EVO-series drives. Samsung's 850 Pro drives are faster, but cost twice as much.

Overall performance consistency is reasonably good as well. If the drive is nearly filled there are noticeable stalls until TRIM completes. Underprovisioning the drive by 20% solved this issue (see below).

Cons: The MX100 claims to have TCG Opal 2.0 support for hardware encryption. This is flaky at best. The first drive we had did allow encryption using a passphrase, but lost its configuration after three weeks. This led to a bricked drive - no available partitions. Crucial does not offer a utility to reset the PSID - essentially wiping the drive clean. This is a problem with other Crucial SSDs, but hdparm could reset those back to factory default conditions.

The MX100 is reported as not being Opal 2 compliant by hdparm, so the drive could not be reset. Crucial sent a replacement MX100 with newer firmware, which did not allow setting a drive password at all. Not only did hdparm in Linux complain about lacking Opal 2 support, but so did Bitlocker and Symantec Endpoint Encryption under Windows.

If having hardware-encrypted data is a requirement for your use, the MX100 is not a good choice. Crucial's tech support claimed this should be fixed in a firmware upgrade, but 7 months after launch no revised firmware is available.

Other Thoughts: We opted to stick with Samsung SSDs - the EVO series for most work, the Pro series for high performance needs. The $30 price premium buys a more compatible drive with full support for firmware upgrades and optimization utilities.

Having a SSD where, depending on the firmware revision, encryption either needs to be done through software (with the associated performance hit) or is unreliable and can brick the drive isn't worth the lower cost.

If encryption is not a requirement for you, the MX100 offers excellent speed. To keep performance consistent, however, we found the drive needed to be underprovisioned. When installing the operating system simply make a partition having 80% of the drive capacity. This gives enough free space for Crucial's garbage collection algorithms to maintain performance without causing noticeable hangs and slowing.
