5 out of 5 eggsGood solid drive

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very stable drive with excellent performance and storage capacity, I've been using it in an older laptop and it was like breathing new life into it.

Cons: The Acronis software that comes with this drive is NOT compatible with Windows 8.1 (possibly 8 as well but untested). If you use the same computer to clone the drive that will be using the drive, MAKE SURE TO UNINSTALL ACRONIS BEFORE YOU START USING THIS DRIVE! If you don't, the computer will lock up when the drive starts to come into use.

5 out of 5 eggsLenovo Y400 Install

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Great price
easy install
Acronis Cloning software worked great

Cons: Height adapter for drive bay adhesive wasnt great but I guess that is picking a nit since the drive is mounted to the chassis.

Other Thoughts: Overall great drive and ease of install was great. My y400 boots in 3 seconds now. Games load incredibly quick. Also my previous 1TB HDD had a partition on it and the acronis software scaled it down flawlessly, this was the only concern I had going in and it was a non issue in the end. Thanks Crucial!!

5 out of 5 eggsLove it!

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Bought this as boot drive for my mid-2011 iMac, followed a YouTube video on adding the drive, fired it up, formatted, installed OS, ran Migration Assistant and it was done. Machine is at least 5x as fast as it was. Boot up is seconds instead of minutes. My giant iPhoto library opens in 3 seconds flat.

Cons: Not a single one as of yet.

5 out of 5 eggsSSD Upgrade from Mechanical HD

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I intended to update my existing mechanical 350GB HD to a new SSD and thought I'd get more space along with better speed so I purchased this unit. The Crucial and Samsung SSDs appeared to have best performance and built in error correction so I limited my search to these two models. Ultimately which ever company hit my price point one... that was Crucial.

The SSD is 7mm and easily fit in 9mm slot within my HP-DV5 laptop that I'm upgrading. Laptop is at least 5 years old and only has a Core 2 Duo in it so performance prior to upgrade was so sluggish that it was either upgrade to an SSD or get a new laptop. The small adapter included with drive allowed for perfect fit. Existing HD Holder fit right into the new SSD. I also purchased the Crucial Cloning software and it cloned flawlessly from what I can tell --- every bit brought in. No errors, no reloading software, all files there.

Other than what's outlined in the Cons section.... perfect. Since the needed SW as outlined below was not necessarily a Crucial problem, I still give it 5 eggs, but their website should make this potentially needed SW Upgrade more apparent.

System has been running flawlessly 1 week. Speed is 10X the old... boot time went from 5 minutes (not kidding 5 minutes) to about 20 seconds (cloned drive gives me exact same registry/boot sequence so this is a fair compare of speed delta seen). Programs open up snappy and I have more space. An excellent choice to the alternative of purchasing a new laptop and then having to re-install all software.

Cons: When the laptop was fired up, everything came up perfect.... WITH ONE EXCEPTION. The windows update routine would not work and gave "Error: Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates, Because The Service Is Not Running". Took many hours of web hunting to find out that because I upgraded to a larger capacity drive, I needed to install new firmware update that allowed the HD Controller to use the larger SSD. I'm still not sure if it was just going to an SSD or the larger size that caused the issue, but based on posts, I believe it's the latter. In other words, I would not have had this issue if I just stuck to a 350G drive instead of going to a 500G. I've saw many posts on this but not solutions that worked for me. Finally I was directed to a link on the HP Driver and Downloads page that linked me to an update for an Intel ISSD update which is needed for the HD controller on my laptop. I installed the package, rebooted and everything was running fine -- Windows could again update.

Crucial needs to do a better job of knowing about some of these necessary patches and let potential purchasers know of these needed upgrade. They already have a matrix of computer models to SSD & RAM compatibility... one more step to state the need for SW upgrade to help their devices work properly should not be too onerous.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Was also part of my laptop upgrade, so I could use as a remote video editing machine while traveling. Used Crucial SSD's in past, along with other brands, and since I don't abuse the things, I've had pretty good luck with all of mine so far.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I've used Crucial, Intel, Corsair GT and GTX, Kingston, OCZ Vertex 4, SanDisk, and probably a couple of others in my builds, and those that I have done for others. If you don't abuse the things, they typically work. I've used them for storage, and still using my OCZ Vertex 4 128GB's (4 with two each in a RAID 0 on LSI 9271-8i RAID Card) for editing video and such - no problems encountered. This Crucial drive is in my HP laptop as the secondary drive for all the "away" editing I may have to do. Working great so far!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, Bad Software

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast drive, easy to setup, no drivers necessary. Cut my boot time to 8 seconds.

Cons: The Acronis software that's bundled with this drive is not compatible with Windows 8.1. If you install it, only use it for cloning the drive, then uninstall it, otherwise it will freeze your computer once you start using the SSD. Specifically disable the "Acronis Nonstop Backup Service."

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great drive, not the fastest on the market but easily the best bang for your buck. Make sure you get the 500gb version though, it's much faster than the smaller ones.

5 out of 5 eggsto ROBERT S. below..............

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: the "buzzing" sound could be because of the chipset running the sata port.

find out what chipsets are on the board.......and what sata ports they run........... Intel seems to have some problems on different boards for some reason.............. maybe a marvell if it's there?

Cons: hope the info helps...

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, easy to use.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I upgraded from a Plextor M5S 128GB, solely because I ran out of room. Price/Size point is great. I used a desktop computer to image from the Plextor to the Crucial MX100 (the Plextor/Crucial go in a laptop).

The Acronis software that comes with it worked fine, and i copied over about 115GB in less than ten minutes. When I put the Crucial MX100 in my laptop, it booted right up with all data intact.

I will say, however, that I did uninstall the Acronis software right away. It put 4 or 5 background processes constantly running in Windows. It sort of reminded me of the old days of Norton AntiVirus, wanting to get into all of your business.

Anyway, CrystalDiskMark put the MX100 right around the advertised write/read (I got about 500/500). The Random 4k tests came out slower than advertised, so I'm going to mess around with that a bit and see what's up. In my every day use, though, I'm booting into Windows 8.1 in 10 seconds, or so.

Once you go SSD, it's tough to go back.
