5 out of 5 eggsDane-Elec SSD

Pros: Faster than traditional spinning magnetic platter disk.
Not suseptible to mechanical damage due to G forces'
No mechanical motion, hence no fragmentation delay due to cylinder seeking or rotational latency.
USB case and disk copy software included.

Cons: Cost is higher than traditional magnetic disk of same capacity.

Other Thoughts: The replacement of my laptop disk drive was accomplished quickly and easily. Everything I needed was in the box and it all worked flawlessly.

2 out of 5 eggsterrible/querky

Pros: it's an Intel drive and comes with nice accessories.

Cons: I've tried to install this drive on several laptops by HP,Dell,ASUS,and even a few towers. I get the same results on all of them. The drive will not work at all unless the sata controller is set to IDE mode(not cool) and then when in IDE mode it will only work for a few boots then the bios looses it until I go into bios settings and search for it again. While in the meantime it throws the sata controller of the motherboard into such a loop that no other drives can be recognized while this one is installed. I thought possibly it was the adapter so I tried it in a netbook yielding the same results. The only way this drive works consistantly is if it's used as an external USB drive. That makes the idea of an SSD drive being faster non existant!!!

Other Thoughts: I missed the 30day return for replacement ONLY policy newegg holds on this item and Dane-Elec corp will NOT honor a return strait to them if the plastic film has been removed from the drive. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THIS FILM TO INSTALL IT!!!
So... I'm stuck with a $200 80GB USB external drive. I could buy 3TB for that much... feelin pretty sore now :(

1 out of 5 eggsNot Worth the Aggravation

Pros: Reasonable fast & quiet.

Cons: Doesn't work for more than 1 hour. Put it into my HP7640 to speed it up. Installed Windows 7 on it and everything was working great until the first time the machine went into Standby. Could not come out of standby and completely locked the machine up. After a day of troubleshooting I took it out of the machine and put it in a drawer for 3 months until today. Another machine I have had it's hard drive die last week so I decided to give this drive a try again. Since this machine is only for gaming the Standby issue shouldn't be a problem because I only turn it on when I want to game. Everything seemed fine at first but the machine started locking up completely after a few hours. Nothing to do but hit the power button and restart the machine. This drive is a $200 piece of junk. Would not recommend to anyone!!!

Other Thoughts: The transfer software that they give you is also no good. It is a stripped down version of a Acronis product. It won't allow you to transfer your OS and files if the original partition is larger then this drive. Spent hours trying to transfer my files and never got it to work right.

3 out of 5 eggsDell Latitude

Pros: It is an intel SSD. Google it.

Cons: The 2.5" adapter does not fit in Dell Latitudes as is. See bellow for details.
The performance increase is not as mind blowing as expected.
Dane-Elec online support is unexacting.

Other Thoughts: The SSD will not fit in the Dell Latitude disk bay. Open the adapter take the SSD out along with the actual SATA converter. Tape the drive to the SATA converter to avoid serous troubles. Insert the 1.8" drive along with the attached SATA into the drive bay. It will be hard to do and you might have to apply some extra pressure. Once you get it in, unplug it (needle-head pliers help). Put the SSD back in the 2.5" adapter but leave out the little piece of plastic that goes between the SATA converter and the lid of the 2.5" adapter. (I was not able to fit the drive inside the laptop with the plastic piece.) Place in the 2.5" adapter inside the drive bay and you are all set.

5 out of 5 eggsOh so Sweet

Pros: Fast... Fast... Fast...
Eggslent Bang For Buck.. probably the best deal on newegg for a SSD.. Got t with a promo for 150 w/ free shipping..

Cons: its not 500gb

Other Thoughts: About the TRIM issue.. It should only be an issue at all if, 1. you are running windows 7 only. 2. you have a chipset that it will work with (I believe some AMD chipsets are a nogo). & 3. you have no intentions of running anything in Raid..

I myself have full intentions of ordering a 2nd & as soon as Newegg gets these back in stock & will be running them in Raid 0..

1 out of 5 eggsWouldn't install in Dell Latitude D630

Pros: Price was OK. It was probably fast (although I never knew for sure)

Cons: Wouldn't install in my Dell Latitude D630. Even though the connectors looked OK, it would never actually make contact.

Probably a design flaw.

2 out of 5 eggsDoes not fit...

Pros: Decent price; the migration tool seems fine.

Cons: It doesn't fit in my Dell Latitude E6400. The SATA connectors do not quite line up. Therefore, this drive is of no use to me whatsoever.

5 out of 5 eggsToo much angst over lack of TRIM

Pros: What's the big deal over lack of TRIM? The previous poster's comment about wiping the drive every few month is plain silly. I guarantee he will not notice any performance hit after few months of using the x-18MG1.

The use-induced performance drop on the G1 drives is only around 3~5%. Access latencies increase slightly, but they're still < 3ms.

Cons: Intel SSDs manage writes much more intelligently, requiring significantly lower NAND cycling over other makers. With multi-channel flash using native command queuing Intel SSDs (one of the reasons why Intel G1s cost twice as much as other SSDs when it came out) distribute read and write operations across the channels efficiently and reduces write/read cycles.

For a 32GB SSD, Intel controller has to cycle 1500x to write 40TB of data while other controllers have to cycle 75,000x.

Other Thoughts: Everyone who's done research on SSD TRIM has read Anand's in-depth and well written article. However, even he closes his paper on TRIM with following:

"While personally I'm not put off by the gradual slowdown of SSDs, I can understand the hesitation. In the benchmarks we've looked at today, for the most part these drives perform better than the fastest hard drives even when the SSDs are well worn."

4 out of 5 eggsGood bang for the buck, but still expensive

Pros: Still faster, quieter, and cooler than any notebook HDD counterpart i've used. The 5400 RPM original drive was fairly cool, but this is there or less. Direct plug in replacement for Aspire 5570 & 5610. Breathed some new life back into slightly older models. Removes all the HDD whine. Laptop runs cooler on the lap without the HDD heat producer. Makes the laptop more "hit" proof when running.

Cons: Still a little pricey for what you get. Limited storage; 80GB goes fast. No trim support, so you need to perdiodically image, wipe, and reapply backup image.

Other Thoughts: The lack of a trim option and limited 80GBs knocks off one egg for me. It's still goes unstated why intel let the Gen1 drives off the list of upgrades. Boots fast. Everything is much snappier including menus and load time. I love having the laptop be completely silent; until the processor fan kicks in. Overall, a good drive. Keep in mind that adding this to an older laptop will allow to function a little better, but your never/rarely exploit the full potential of this drve with it. The transfer rate/capability of a typical laptop is fairly low with respect to medium to high-end desktop. People keep forgetting, or maybe it's too much trouble, that you can get around the lack of trim issue with some effort (backup, wipe, restore) every few months. This freshens the drive back to original condition. Don't use for an installation that is constantly deleting, updating, and creating files; performance will tank faster. Still wanting to Raid 0 two of these. Wondering what it would be like.

5 out of 5 eggsCustomer Service at Dane

Pros: I wrote a review a while back indicating my product had failed. I was a bit concerned since the info on this product through their website was a bit vague.

I want to report my experience and put away any doubt about the warranty on this product through Dane. Their process and communications are stellar. The experience exceeded my expectations.

Cons: None ..

Other Thoughts: Thanks to Ashley and Joe for their help and fast resolution to my problem. You have a devoted customer and I look forward to purchasing your products again.

Folks, if something goes wrong just use the information on the box and in the manual to contact their customer service. Send an email because the site does not include this product yet. You will have the problems solved within a week or so.

Oh .. one more thing. Their shipping was great. Packaging was great, product was protected and secure. I could not be happier.

Thanks Newegg for having suppliers like this one!
