Intel Solid-State Drives (Intel SSDs) just got better. The next generation Intel SSD 320 Series offers built-in data protection features, better performance, larger capacities and more value for your money. Built with 25 nanometer (nm) compute-quality Intel NAND Flash Memory, the Intel SSD 320 Series accelerates PC performance where it matters most.

With random read performance up to 39,500 Input/Output Operations per Second (IOPS) and sequential read performance of up to 270 megabytes per second (MB/s), your PC will blaze through the most demanding applications and will handle intense multi-tasking needs. Couple that performance with random writes up to 23,000 IOPS and sequential writes up to 205MB/s to unleash your system.

WORLD-CLASS RELIABILITY – BETTER BY DESIGN
The Intel SSD 320 Series features new industry leading, compute-quality Intel 25nm NAND Flash memory manufacturing processes and an advanced architecture that employs 10 parallel NAND flash channels equipped with multi-level cell NAND flash memory. 4 out of 5 eggsmuch faster then old 7200 rpm drives

Pros: Works flawlessly in my MacBook Pro early 2011. Trim is not supported in MacOS but the controller itself is supposed to do the cleaning. Very fast on reading and writing although writing is not near the max. Speeds: read 505 mb/s Write: 315 mb/s. theoretical max is 545/495 read/write

Cons: Still rather expensive and no firmware updates for Mac. You will have to attach it on a PC.

Other Thoughts: Very nice drive. My VMware windows 7 boots in 10 sec. MacOS 15-20 sec. No waiting time to load any app. Insanely fast and hide improvement over regular drives. Plus the live span is 240 years :) and no movable parts so you really do not care when you have to move your laptop. Time machine is a must have with these drives as if something goes bad all your data is gone.

1 out of 5 eggsUPDATE Re Expensive But Worthwhile

Pros: This is an update/follow up on a prior review. See Other Thoughts below.

Cons: After almost 1 year of operation in a laptop, the SSD unit died.

Laptop does not boot and SSD is not recognized. When hooked as an external drive, the 600 GB unit shows as a raw unallocated drive with only 7 MB capacity.

I had the latest firmware installed, so if this a recurring "Bad Context 13x Error" (which was supposed to have been fixed), it could be trouble. Will discuss with Intel support and update.

Other Thoughts: PRIOR REVIEW

Pros: All the benefits of SSD (blazing bootup time, much faster application access, Outlook fast launch, etc.) combined with 600 GB of storage space. This upgrade brought my aging HP Elitebook 8530p laptop back to life.

Cons: Paid $1,119 for 600 GB of storage -- early adopter premium. Could have brought another laptop with this sum. Need we say more?

Other Thoughts: Was nervous about the reported "Bad Context 13x Error as seen on select Intel® SSD 320 Series drives."

Downloaded and installed Intel's 8-17-2011 firmware update before installing the SSD into the laptop. Firmware update process was a pain in the neck, but completed without problems.
Intel firmware is available here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18363

The SSD unit is working great (so far) -- Knock on wood. All in all, a highly worthwhile (albeit expensive) upgrade that will definitely and materially impact productivity, for the better.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 9 months

Pros: Fast. Roomy.

Cons: Died after 9 months of use in my Mac Mini 2011. Did not do anything harsh to it, rare reboots, almost always used power off/reset on the operating system to shut it down. Already had latest firmware on it (applied as soon as I purchased the drive). The fact that this issue has happened, which was supposed to have been fixed by the firmware a few months ago, means a problem is still there with these drives, leaving you open to losing all your data. It appears no data can be recovered when these drives fail, unlike regular hard drives where you still have a shot at getting something off them.

5 out of 5 eggsAs expected

Pros: I put this drive in to an aging 3 year old Macbook Pro, to replace the slow, 7200 RPM drive it had, and now it acts faster (less waiting) than a coworker's brand new non SSD laptop. Time is money, and this is money well spent, that has paid big dividends in time saved.

Cons: As a newer technology, I am a little apprehensive of the early bugs of SSDs being worked out, as opposed to the mature technology of spinning rust hard drives.

5 out of 5 eggsCruising along

Pros: Fast for SATA2 and capacity or course. 5 year warranty. I recommend it.

Cons: Price, but as I knew what it cost before I bought it ...

Other Thoughts: I have had this drive for a year or so now and no issues at all. Not sure what happened for the reviewer below me as 3 drives so far sounds horrible. I have had no issues to date and the drive seems just as fast as ever.

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty Product

Pros: Very fast

Cons: First drive died after 6 months. Had to RMA to Intel. Second drive from Intel died after 3 months. Had to RMA to Intel. Third drive died after 2 months. Will be calling Intel again on Monday.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this drive. The speed isn't worth the trouble of replacing dead drives. And when they die, they REALLY die. The first two died and shows 8mb for their sizes in Ultimate Boot CD's gparted. The third one died in front of my eyes. Hourglassed in Windows 7, then bluescreen, on reboot, the drive wasn't even recognized by the bios.

5 out of 5 eggsBattery life Concerns on 2011 15" Macbook Pro

Pros: High capacity Storage

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: For those who have 15" MacBooks I found that using firefox or google chrome browsers dramatically decreased battery life and my fans would always kick in. It seems that these browser activate the discrete gpu thus using more power and creating more heat. I started using only the safari browser and my battery life has been as advertised at 7 hrs sometimes 7 and a half hours.

5 out of 5 eggsJust as epxected

Pros: Intel reliability and warranty. Intel controller. Great for my SATA2 motherboard. Large disk space. Still nice and speedy for my needs. I now just have this drive only. Support TRIM and the SSD toolbox works great. Data migration took about 10 minutes for 60 gigs using the software downloaded from Intel's site. Nice to have faster write speeds. 5 year warranty which is the best of any SSD manufacturer.

Cons: $$$$$$$$$, Not SATA3, but in a few years that won't matter anyway as a drive this size will be half the cost or less and at least twice as fast.

Other Thoughts: To the review just under mine. For the price why would you keep a drive with any sort of defects? Send the sucker back the the Egg before you have to deal with Intel directly. Newegg would have it back to you in a week. This is not in defense of the extremely plain wrapper Intel puts on their SSDs.

I now have 5 Intel SSDs. a 40, 80 and 160 (G2s) and a 160 320 drive and this drive. All of them have maintained their speed over time and continue to work very well. Get this if you can afford it.

5 out of 5 eggsPOST takes longer than boot

Pros: Once boot strap begins, skip getting that cup of coffee while it's finishing, it's already finished. Vista 64 Ultimate with heavy TSRs and apps loading on boot- in about a minute! Plenty of room to install apps. Recommended to use fast hard drives in a raid 5 or faster config for file storage just to conserve space.

Cons: The money is not a con- it's been said before, you get what you pay for. New Egg was sluggish getting this to the loading dock. You would think spending big money they would want to make that customer happy. They're in la la land I guess. Hope I never have to deal directly with their customer service. If they did not beat the internet for price on this, I would not have used them because I know that about this vendor :-(

Other Thoughts: Install and use the Intel utility download from their site. May or may not need the EPROM update. I also highly recommend Diskeeper with Hyperfast, you do need to keep SSDs defragmented for life expectancy and speed over time.
