Manufacturer Warranty

Parts
5 years limited
All Intel SSD 520 products sold in the OEM boxes have a five-year limited warranty term; however, the warranty includes a "Media Wearout" limitation. The Media Wearout limitation provides that the warranty shall expire when the usage of the drive has reached a predetermined usage limit established by Intel, which could result in a warranty term much shorter than five years for drives used in heavy-use, enterprise applications. The Media Wearout is determined by Intel's implementation of the SMART attribute "E9" Media Wearout indicator (as measured by and shown in the Intel SSD Toolbox, www.intel.com/go/ssdtoolbox). At any point during the warranty term, if the Media Wearout Indicator reads "1", as measured by the Intel SSD Toolbox, then the drive has reached its wear limit and the Limited Warranty at that point expires, regardless of how much time may have been remaining on the five-year term. This Media Wearout limitation is imposed due to the greater workload demands of enterprise/data center deployment on SSDs.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Upgrade!

Pros: Faster than the Intel 510
Super Easy to Install

Cons: No shiny blue box

Other Thoughts: So it does not come with the pretty blue box. So it does not come with screws. BIG DEAL! Who needs the box? Who does not have 4 small screws lying around? Anyone who spends the extra $20 to get the retail version should have their head checked.

3 out of 5 eggsgreat with Intel chipset

Pros: This thing is faster than any other SSD I've owned if installed with an Intel chipset. That is the chipset, not the CPU.

Cons: Initially installed in my desktop which is AMD and couldn't tune or anything as the Intel SSD toolbox couldn't communicate with it because it wasn't an Intel chipset. This should in no way be a hindrance for a drive!

Other Thoughts: Luckily enough my laptop was a willing transplant patient.

If I hadn't had an Intel chipset board to use this with I would have been infuriated.

I honestly don't know how to rate this. If you do have compatible hardware it's a 5; if not it's a 1/4 of an egg as it's slower than a HDD.

You can find all sorts of articles about this by searching something like "The Intel SSD Toolbox cannot communicate with the selected Intel SSD"

5 out of 5 eggsMac OS / Apple

Pros: very fast, very reliable for OS and Applications.

Used as Startup Drive in MacPro 2009 in optical drive bay.
Negotiated speed: 3 Gigabit
Trim enabled with this trick: http://digitaldj.net/2011/07/21/trim-enabler-for-lion/

Mac OS 10.8.2, using stripe 0 RAIDed Velociraptors for all caching needs

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Posted in response to incorrect post below re: link speed on Macs.
Obviously, your computer needs to be able to negotiate at 3 Gigabit. Many older MacBooks and MacBook Pros can not.
In MacPros, you'd still need a 6Gb PCIe expansion to take advantage of 6Gb speeds.
Use http://mactracker.ca to look up what machine and connections you actually have, if in doubt.
Hope this helps.

3 out of 5 eggsUpdate of my previous review

Pros: No change

Cons: I just received the screws. I bought an assortment and this was a good decision. The good screws are not M2 3mm but M2 5 mm. I purchased the screws from LaptopScrews. I can't say that I am completely happy. I did receive the screws, but they showed it in a case (the picture on the web) that I never received. In addition, some of the sizes are not what I expected. All this cost me an additional 75$.

Other Thoughts: When you remove the screws, you loose the warranty. This is something I did not expect.

Conclusion : if you want a 7 mm SSD, purchase a 7 mm SSD. This means that maybe you are not going to purchase an Intel SSD.

4 out of 5 eggsSmall screws

Pros: For the moment, I assume that the performance is good. Packaging was good.

Cons: To make this ssd fit into a 7 mm slot, you have to remove a plastic part. This is quite easy to remove, but the screws provided do not fit after removing this plastic part (the black one). Intel did not care to provide appropriate screws. On internet, some people say that it takes M2, 3mm screws.

Other Thoughts: More generally, it would be nice if newegg had screws available. It is not the first time that I would like to purchase small screws and I find it difficult to get them.

2 out of 5 eggsLaptop problems

Pros: Newegg willcall service worked perfectly, I was able to pick up the Intel 520 240 GB SSD a few hours after I ordered it.

Cons: I selected the Intel SSD based on the reviews here and on my experience with other Intel products. This Series 520 240 GB drive was purchased to replace the failed drive in an Asus U50A laptop. I did a completely fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium and found two major problems. Windows explorer halts at random times causing and extended pause, and when the laptop comes out of sleep or hibernate mode it delivers the infamous BSOD. I researched the problem and found this is a common issue with lntel 520 Series in laptops. I posed my problem on a thread at the Intel technical forum, and have used every suggestion Intel support and technical users have attempted. Combining my too many hours of work and the results of others that have chased this problem I have come to the conclusion that no matter what changes can be made to Windows 7 drivers, registry tweaks, settings for HIPM, DIPM or Active power management, Intel SSD Toolbox, Microsoft AHCI or Intel RST drive management.... The proper fix is to take the dang Intel thing out and replace it with a Samsung SSD. Oh, yea, then Limited Warranty means I am out $240.

Other Thoughts: The reason I gave two stars is the drive is very fast, and the laptop continues to work - with occasional pauses - as long as you disable any sleep or hibernation functions.

5 out of 5 eggsScreaming Fast

Pros: Very fast, This is my first SSD. I figured I would do it the right way and buy the best one on the market. Installed windows in under 10 minutes, boots super fast. Large capacity.

Cons: I didn't buy one sooner.

Other Thoughts: I pity the fool who doesn't buy this SSD for their new build.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU HAVE A MAC

Pros: Great if you have a PC

Cons: This drive has a known compatibility issue with Macs which is not mentioned at all in the description. It will only negotiate a SATA I (1.5gbit) link. Despite advertising that it is backward compatible and will fall back to SATA II, this does not happen with Macs.

Other Thoughts: This is completely worthless if you are a Mac Owner. There should be a giant red bold warning about this problem in the description of this product.
