Manufacturer Warranty

Parts
5 years limited
All Intel SSD 520 products sold in the OEM boxes have a five-year limited warranty term; however, the warranty includes a "Media Wearout" limitation. The Media Wearout limitation provides that the warranty shall expire when the usage of the drive has reached a predetermined usage limit established by Intel, which could result in a warranty term much shorter than five years for drives used in heavy-use, enterprise applications. The Media Wearout is determined by Intel's implementation of the SMART attribute "E9" Media Wearout indicator (as measured by and shown in the Intel SSD Toolbox, www.intel.com/go/ssdtoolbox). At any point during the warranty term, if the Media Wearout Indicator reads "1", as measured by the Intel SSD Toolbox, then the drive has reached its wear limit and the Limited Warranty at that point expires, regardless of how much time may have been remaining on the five-year term. This Media Wearout limitation is imposed due to the greater workload demands of enterprise/data center deployment on SSDs.

5 out of 5 eggsIntel 520 480GB SSD

Pros: Very simple, very fast, very large. I upgraded to Ivy Bridge and replaced my velociraptor 300GB (great drive at the time) with the Intel 520 SSD, 480GB. About $1 per gigabyte; about the same I paid for the Velociraptor a few years ago. I moved ~6GB of photos from the velociraptor onto a flash drive, taking about 30 minutes. I downloaded them onto the 520 in about 5 minutes! Booting with Windows 8 Pro on the 520 takes approximately 7 seconds!

Cons: Why does it come with a mandatory 2mm spacer?

Other Thoughts: I will get another 520 as it the first one fills up with photos and videos and wait for mSATA on boards to speed up to SATA III or PCI-e 3.0 to move my operating system to an mSATA drive and use the two 520s for "storage".

5 out of 5 eggsVery fast, and finally somewhat decent storage capacity

Pros: Intel's 520-series SSDs are very fast. I put one of these in my PC and moved my Windows 7 x64 boot & system partitions to it, and my Windows bootup time went from about 1-2 minutes (estimated) down to about 25-30 seconds (estimated). Applications load a bit quicker too.
Also, 480GB is a fairly decent storage capacity for an SSD. I didn't want to go with a smaller one because I'd feel cramped due to not enough space.

Cons: SSDs are still a bit expensive. Also, the storage blocks on SSDs can only be written to a limited number of times, so you need to take special care to preserve the life of an SSD (never defragmenting, move temporary directories and the Windows swap file to a traditional hard drive if you have one, etc.).
