2 out of 5 eggsIntel disappoints

This review is from: Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW240A4K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Regarded as one of the most reliable SSD's available. Comes in a well equipped package for a reasonable price.

Cons: Its Intel - I expected it to work out of the box. Yet, I spent countless hours troubleshooting a new server build due to the firmware that came on this SSD - the latest firmware for this SSD (DC32). When configuring SATA as AHCI in the Intel serer board bios, the board would not finish the bios posting process with this SSD connected. Intel tech support helped me narrow it down to the SSD, though there was no reason it should not have worked. As it turned out, I had the exact same model SSD on a shelf that was build 1 year earlier and had the older DC12 firmware - that SSD worked just fine in my server build. Intel agrees that there is a compatibility issue between the latest DC32 firmware on this Intel SSD and with my Intel server board. Not something I would ever have expected from this premium brand. And certainly not appreciated in terms of all the time wasted trying to figure this out.

Other Thoughts: I do appreciate that Intel has been responsive, though they have heavily depended on me, the user, for troubleshooting a compatibility issue between two of their own products. I still have not received a viable solution (other than to use the older SSD), even though I was willing to accept a simple flash download to bring the new unit back to DC12 firmware.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

This review is from: Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW240A4K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The drive is very simple and easy to setup and use (what hard drive isn't?). It came with adapters to fit different size drive bays, so that's a plus.

Nothing remarkable about it. It is about as fast as I expected. Definite improvement over the HDDs I've had in the past but it's not the fastest thing out there.

Cons: No cons that I've found.

Other Thoughts: It's so tiny and cute inside my giant desktop case.

3 out of 5 eggsHave problem with cloning software

This review is from: Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW240A4K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Have good reviews. Once it is installed, it runs very well.

Cons: Cloning process using the intel software is horrible. I watched a intel video about how to install the ssd on a laptop. I followed everything it said. Using the same downloaded software (Acronis), you have to reboot the laptop to start the cloning. When my laptop starts, before the window starts, it complains about not finding the ssd which i connected through an enclosure. I had to push the power button to stop the laptop. The cloning software just won't work. I had to download another cloning software. Took me a while to get this done. I prefer the Samsung SSD. Their software makes it a breeze to clone the disk.

5 out of 5 eggsReally fast

This review is from: Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW240A4K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: really fast and affordable

Cons: per GB they're still expensive so I have to keep the majority of my data on an old fashioned 7200 HD. I load up only my active projects. Still, plenty of time saved.

Other Thoughts: My 4 year old Mac Pro was fast until I installed this. Now it's Really Fast.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's an SSD...

This review is from: Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW240A4K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Works fast, its an ssd, wasn't DOA

Cons: Couldn't get Windows 7 to install on it... got some write to disc error but im fairly certain it had nothing to do with this particular HDD... didn't really troubleshoot too much because i got it installed on my other SSD, might've just been some UEFI setting or needed a BIOS update or something weird i dont know.

2 out of 5 eggsGot disk - no cable

This review is from: Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW240A4K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Looks nice. Speed should be good but not installed

Cons: No USB to SATA cable. But insert says it should be there. Talked to Nestor at Intel support. He basically told me go buy another cable. I am a bit frustrated at Intel for not providing me the cable and then telling me to buy it somewhere else.

Other Thoughts: I would think twice about buying Intel products outside of the OEM stuff that comes with PCs.

5 out of 5 eggsNew life for an older board

This review is from: Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW240A4K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Price, value; much, much faster than the Vertex 2 it replaced. Very complete kit.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I installed this on my Abit IP35 Pro without a hitch. Bios is set for RAID as I have a pair of mirrored drives for backup. The downloaded transfer software moved my boot drive from a 480GB OCZ Vertex 2 to the new 240GB Intel drive with one click; very simple. Win 7 pro 64 bit doesn’t know it’s been cloned.
I had trouble with the OCZ disappearing but after about 25 test boots it is not the case with this drive. The difference in performance is amazing especially opening large folders of uncompressed .Tiff files. Seat of the pants feels faster than when I was set up with two Re4s in RAID 0 but without the feeling of impending doom.
I am getting the last little bit of performance out of my old SATA-2 board and Q6600 @ 3Ghz that I think I’m realistically going to be able to get.
