4 out of 5 eggsReliability over speed

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: 4 eggs for my usage and environment. I built this rig for the man cave down in a horse stable I've built out. It gets very hot and very cold. The build is just not in a happy environment, yet I knew I needed an SSD. "Intel 730 without a doubt", came up as a shell shocker, sold.

It's a very reliable drive, will withstand these elements, and I just trust it fully.

Cons: 3 eggs, max, for other purchaser's usage, environment, and hopes for the true SSD experience. It's just kinda slow for an SSD with only the warm fuzzy feeling that it's industrial strength.

Skulls. It's white trash. Might as well put a pic of Kid Rock sitting on a Huyabusa in front of a mobile home in it's place. Skulls, flames, blinking lights...a builder needs none of this. Thankfully they go in brackets to never be seen again; Even if you have a window. (who displays that they have an SSD now days? We all do. They're $50. I wouldn't put this on display on any build).

It's the semi-pretty girlfriend. Not the best, don't have to work hard to get her, won't nag and bother you all the time, no maintenance required, and will never cheat on you.

Other Thoughts: I'm with the prior comment Timothy K. made on this purchase and review. I'm an all SSD user for all boot drives on every build and have been since they came out over 10 years ago now. Loved the snappiness of SSD's and haggled a bit over switching from 5x74G raptors in R5 due to capacity issues early on. After paying out for 5x150G raptors and enjoying the growing tech in the SSD field I knew I had to get on board fully from that point on out. If you want performance, you just go to SSD with no questions asked; Deal with capacity and storage in another thought process.

It's an SSD with good capacity, at a decent price, and Intel reliability. If it's your first SSD you won't be disappointed at all. If you're already well entrenched in SSD's and have used several before, you will be hugely disappointed by having very average speeds compared to others out there. Probably why it's on sale a lot here.

This is officially my 27th SSD and there's just a lot left on the table when I know Intel can do better. Also, none of them have ever failed so I question whether I, or anyone else, should really chose reliability over speed any more. I back up constantly, I don't run enterprise servers, and no drives have failed. I don't discourage this SSD as a purchase but I would look around for something more snappy with more actual performance.

Still running Mushkin, OCZ, Samsung, Crucial, and Intel of many variations. This was the first that really let me down since we're deep into the SSD evolution and is just ho-hum.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive, buy if on sale

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: SSD speeds
240 g size
On sale is a good buy

Cons: none. Just one egg off for price/performance ratio compared to other drives.

Other Thoughts: In real time usage, running a 24/7, 10 cam security server with data and web usage, it is not noticeably faster than the 120g OCZ Agility 3 (sata 6) drive it replaced.

5 out of 5 eggsIntel FTW

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Finally, I could afford a quality SSD with enough storage capacity for 3 different Linux distributions! Five separate partitions; after more than 4 months of active use ("Power-On Hours"), this baby shows no sign of wear/tear. Though, obviously, if you buy an MLC SSD you expect nothing to go wrong after a few months of use. :p

Cons: None so far

4 out of 5 eggsSolid State

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Performance is not exaggerated. Yes you will notice a difference. A big difference.

Cons: This might sound crazy but I was not so much a fan of the label and front of the SSD being reverse to the Intel 530 series I purchased earlier this year. In my Corsair 780T the solid states are showcased really nice and since the profile of the 730 series SSD was reverse I had to modify the brackets that display the SSD. After I was done it still looks great but for the life of me I cannot figure to what reason they would reveres the orientation. Aesthetic Fail. If you have Intel and a wicked Skull to display why would want to display it upside down and backwards? DUH!

2 out of 5 eggsFunctional but disappointing

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: As has been stated in some reviews of this product elsewhere, Intel has taken steps to ensure that this SSD is highly reliable. You can expect longevity and consistency from this drive.

Cons: Reliability has been provided at the cost of performance. While reliability is nice, some consumers are purchasing solid state drives with the intent to reach a peak of performance, primarily in terms of load times.

I have run a variety of tests using ATTO disk benchmark and found that the write speeds of this drive (Intel 730) cap out at ~300 MB/s. The read speed caps out at about ~480MB/s.

Is this a catastrophe? No, not necessarily.

Huge disappointment? Yes.

Other Thoughts: All in all, this is a functional SSD, but if you are looking for a top performer, this isn't what you want.

For comparison purposes, I have an Intel 530 (180gb) drive that consistently writes at ~518MB/s and reads at ~547MB/s

I would suggest checking out the Intel 530 series as they perform better for less money.

In the event that you want to avoid Intel entirely, I would highly suggest Corsair solid state drives. I own a Corsair Force 240gb SSD that I purchased in January 2012. It still functions and has even higher read/write speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: An excellent product, extended boot up time is approx 20 seconds. I suspect that booting it up in regular boot would take approx ≤ 8 seconds. This is the second Intel SSD I have purchased and both have preformed magnificently. Intel also sent me an awesome hat with this purchase. I do not mind advertising for their great SSD.

Cons: I have to share the hat with my husband.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive at a Great Price

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Easy win7 install, fast drive, no issues (motherboard is an asrock z68 pro gen3). I've only had it for a few days but I don't foresee any random catastrophic problems with it. Don't shy away from buying this SSD because of the few 1/5 ratings here on newegg, because they all sound like issues that have nothing to do with the drive itself such as: "My BIOS won't recognize the drive", "My partition is GPT instead of MBR now I can't install windows 7", "Screen freezes when I try to install software from the disc", etc... If your cracked version of windows 8 failed to install and you're stuck with a GPT partition that you don't know how to change to MBR such that windows 7 can be installed, don't blame the hard drive...

Cons: None; will update if there are any issues but I doubt there will be.

2 out of 5 eggsHad High Hopes but was Dissapointed.

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: SSD with what seems to be a great reliability factor and warranty

Cons: Extremely low tech customer service.
Provided software shows problematical issues.
The only recommended option by support voids warranty.
If there is a problem they expect YOU to pay shipping...

Other Thoughts: Possibly a good buy but based on my experience I just returned 8 unopened units and am stuck with a 9th that never wanted to recognize properly.

After a few days of poor information I finally was able to get the unit to recognize properly in both the system and the Bios but at that point even the provided software still did not recognize the drive.

Based on manufacture date the drive was 4 months newer than the latest firmware but the recommendation was to update the firmware... Do I hear Warranty void?

The Technical Reps were actually great from a professional level but seemed to be "Nervous or Afraid" of escallating an issue above their level to either a more experienced tech or one that had a more open group of options to work with.

I would at this point prefer a refund but seem to be stuck with an overpriced external drive that will never perform as it should.
