5 out of 5 eggsUpdated review

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Intel reliability, extremely fast when set up in a Raid 0, comes with Data Migration software so you can easily transfer data from your old drive to the new one.

Cons: The Skull.....I want a skull sticker. I can not view the drive when it is installed inside of my case. The "Speed Demon" stickers are out dated. Make something new Intel!

My wife refused to allow me to bring my tower to bed the other night.

Other Thoughts: So this is the second drive I purchased. A couple weeks ago I reviewed and gave the read and write speeds with just one of these drives. Here is the updated information with the second paired in Raid 0.

Sequential read and write speeds 1017.43/573.14, 4k read and write 34MB/s and 104.48 MB/s, 4k-64; 606.71 MB/s and 516.12 MB/s. Read time .075ms and write time .059ms. Overall scores 743/678. I believe i can attain even faster speeds once I get all the little tweeks completed. This data is just from install to benchmark.

I would recommend these drives to anyone looking for speed, reliability and a good price.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's acceptable

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Overall a nice drive. For the price of $109.00 and a free stick of ram (valued at $55) you really can't go wrong.

Cons: Instead of engraving a skull on the case of the drive, a cool skull sticker would have been better then the typical "Speed Demon" one Intel always sends.

Other Thoughts: The drive is pretty fast. Sequential read and write speeds 509/273, 4k read and write 34MB/s and 98 MB/s, 4k-64; 342 MB/s and 227 MB/s. Read time .078ms and write time .035ms. Overall scores 428/353. Not that a Raid array is necessary with an SSD I read that these drives really shine when they are paired in a Raid 0 arrray. I'll be purchasing a second drive to test this. I'll post my finding with that drives review.

5 out of 5 eggsOne Of The Few You Should Consider

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: These drives, along with the S3500 and S3700 series, have power-loss protection for data "in-flight" *as well* as "at rest." Don't be fooled folks; power failures DO happen and SSDs without this protection can be silently corrupted if it does. Those drives are UNSAFE to use for any sort of critical data AT ALL; how companies get away with selling them is beyond me. This is not theoretical either; I've had two corrupted over the last five years this way in "desktop" PCs.

These drives are a bit slower than the S3500s but a very solid choice. They are *not* the high-endurance type of unit; if you need that then pony up for the S3700. The cautionary note on endurance in write-heavy applications (e.g. database use, etc) is to beware of write amplification; since a SSD works in 4k block sizes and to change anything in a 4k block you must rewrite the entire thing a very small write turns into a 4k one internally.

With these drives now having come down a *lot* in price there's little argument against using them in any desktop PC as a system disk, or for that matter as a boot and OS device in a large server.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Enterprise-class reliability in a reasonably-priced SSD. Do you really need the last little bit of speed if obtaining it means sacrificing data integrity? I think not.

5 out of 5 eggsIntel 730 240GB model

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, relatively high I/Ops and plays well with deep queue HBAs.

Cons: Not a 1TB for the same price?

Other Thoughts: We've used several of these SSDs (the 120GB variety) in several ZFS arrays as SLOG devices and L2ARC devices. They've worked very well but we need larger capacity especially in the case of L2ARC devices.

The durability of Intel drives is second to none until you break into PCIe enterprise solid state. The sacrifice in write speed is not an issue for us nor our clients. I've noticed people make complaints regarding the write speed, but who needs 550MB/s write speed regularly? Especially when foolish enough to run a RAID0 at the same time? Unless you're running an 800+ client transactional database, you can get by fine with the write speed of these drives and (more importantly) their I/Ops.

We use these drives (albeit smaller capacity) to supplement RAIDz1-2-3's (RAID5/6/7) as well as mirrored-striped arrays and they perform wonderfully. Haven't had one fail yet, and the current drives (the SLOGs anyway) see about 90 GB/day in writes.

5 out of 5 eggswow

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I was amazed at how fast this ssd drive. I'm old school so waiting to boot up and stuff did not really bother me. I have an Intel i5 4690k , gaming 5 motherboard and a WD 1 TB drive. But wanted to try this out on my new build and wow this is by far the best investment I ever made. Don't know much about other models , but this Intel is a keeper. Installed windows and and had up in running in less than 30 min. I am still a newb in gaming but this is awesome .

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Buy you won't be disappointed

5 out of 5 eggsold grateful dead archivist here

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: i just think it kind of ironic that these drives are only slightly smaller cassette tapes we used back in the 70s and 80s. you could maybe get 90 minutes on one cassette...on this one drive i could easily put 90000 grateful dead shows/songs. amazing. and it got the steal your face kinda right there. should be just fine now.

Cons: none yet.
