5 out of 5 eggsBest drive I've ever owned

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP480G4R5 2.5" 480GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I got this when it was on sale for only $258. My only regret is that I only bought one. Windows 8.1 loads in just a few moments. I've built many gaming desktop machines over the past couple of decades, and I can honestly say I've never had a better drive than this one. I'll definately be getting another one when they go on sale again.

Cons: In my opinion, the skull is kind of tacky.

5 out of 5 eggsWhats Up Intel

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP480G4R5 2.5" 480GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Drive is Very Fast used Samsung Magic to benchmark 563 MBs read 511 MBs Write Drive is very snappy response is incredible boot times are Improved Dramatically and this is coming from a Samsung 830 Which was the fastest drive at time 3 yrs ago Love the 5yr warranty and 70 GB per day Very pleased with drive with one Exception see Cons

Cons: I opened box Which had no damage on it whatsoever (Great Job Packing Newegg) and opened sealed anti static bag and slid drive out The first thing I Noticed was a big dent in aluminum cover and finger prints all over drive and some type of adhesive that made drive sticky all over when You pay a large sum of money for a NEW product it should be clean free of damage with no blemishes on it this thing looks like it was assembled in a Garage by a bunch of Misfits I welcome your reply and will gladly send pics of drive box ECT...

Other Thoughts: Drive works great but wish intel would get their quality control together This coming from a Die Hard Long time fan of your company and Products

5 out of 5 eggsFastest SSD I've Owned

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP480G4R5 2.5" 480GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Uses an actual Intel controller (not Sandforce like other more recent Intel drives), top quality MLC NAND, 5 year warranty, extremely fast, enormous for an SSD. This is basically an enterprise grade SSD at a consumer level price. With the promo code it was a few dollars cheaper than the 500GB Samsung EVO, but this is a much higher quality drive than the EVO.

Cons: No power saving features. This drive is meant for high-end desktops, not laptops.

Other Thoughts: I've owned a variety of Intel, Samsung, and Kingston drives, and in terms of real world performance, this is by far the fastest I've used.

Specs: i7 4770K, Asus Sabertooth Z87, 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600, EVGA GTX 780 Ti Superclocked, Seasonic 1000W Platnium, Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD

5 out of 5 eggsThis is a title.

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP480G4R5 2.5" 480GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - Fast fast fast
- Lots of great reliability features like power-off protection

Cons: - I honestly can't think of anything

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these set up in RAID1 on my haswell-e build. Posting takes a while, but once it's finished I go from first seeing the windows logo forming to login screen in just a few seconds.

I don't have much in terms of detailed specs yet (I'll post a follow up review with that stuff), but the WEI for this configuration is 7.9 (the max).

5 out of 5 eggsSmall workgroup server

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP480G4R5 2.5" 480GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast.
High durability for a non-enterprise SSD.
Small - easy to get plenty of airflow around the drive.
Quiet - you don't realize how loud hard drives really are until you get used to an SSD.

Cons: Small laptop-sized mounting screws, even though this drive isn't really for laptops. Mounting holes are positioned for a laptop as well. Had to get the drill out to get these mounted in my server.

Other Thoughts: I put 2 of these in a small workgroup server (an HP ProLiant G7 N54L). I'll let others run the benchmarks - all I know is this server maxes out Gigabit ethernet, and that's without using RAID.
I analyzed our data usage before selecting these drives. The drives have 128TB endurance, so with our typical usage of 20GB/day of writes, they should last 17.5 years.

5 out of 5 eggsIntel quality, high speed

This review is from: Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP480G4R5 2.5" 480GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: It's a solid state disk, so generally the first question is: how fast is it?

The answer is: very. The spec sheet claims (mostly) hold up; after doing a fresh Windows 7 install and putting the machine through its paces for a few hours, I ran AS SSD Benchmark 1.7.4x on the drive:

~510 MB/s read -- 90000 IOPS
~475 MB/s write -- 70000 IOPS

Windows actually boots so fast that it doesn't have the time to finish animating the Windows splash-screen logo. Heh.

The speed is matched by other drives in this class, though, so the real question is this: why should you pay an extra 30-40 dollars for this drive?

The answer, for me, was this: I've put an Intel SSD in every gaming rig I've built since the introduction of the X-25M, and I have never had one fail. Obviously this is anecdotal, but I don't know anybody who's purchased an Intel SSD and been disappointed with its performance or longevity.

This drive is evidently designed from the ground up to be a spiritual successor to Intel's enterprise-class SSDs, though this one is targeted at consumers. The drive is rated for 70 GB/day for 5 years, and it also has power-loss protection, which can be a very nice feature if you're in an area that experiences periodic brownouts or blackouts during parts of the year. Lastly, all tests I've read have indicated that the drive's firmware is heavily focused on performance consistency, so it's less likely that heavy use will significantly degrade the performance of this part.

I really feel that the bundled software suite also deserves a mention. The Intel SSD Toolbox offers easy one-button optimization for Windows systems, including things like disabling services associated with prefetch and disk defragmentation (if necessary.) You can also use it to view the SMART data for the drive, if you're so inclined. It's actually a very nice, lightweight tool.

Cons: Unlike many other current SSDs, it doesn't have support for low power states, so it's probably not suitable for laptop usage (unless the laptop is intended to be a desktop replacement and will spend a great deal of time plugged in.) It pulls about 1.5 W at idle and ~5ish at load. Really a non-factor for desktops and gaming laptops, but something that bears mentioning.

Other Thoughts: It's a bit pricey, but it's a worthwhile purchase if what you want is a fast, bulletproof solution for an enthusiast/gamer desktop.

Also, it has a Skulltrail sticker on it. I suppose if you really love skulls, that may be a pro.
