4 out of 5 eggsGood, and good support

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: Small, convenient for Android devices, large capacity

Cons: Make sure to test it

Other Thoughts: Bought 2, one worked, one didn't. Setup RMA, replacement arrived promptly and worked fine. The OTG worked fine with my Sony Xperia (KitKat), Toshiba Thrive (Jellybean), and an Acer Iconia (Jellybean). Not USB 3.0, but that would cost more.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: it has a good capacity, especially for the price, i picked it up on shell shocker for about $15.

Cons: One downside to this flash-drive is that the sliding covers on either end to cover the usb and micro usb have a very weak lock. they pretty much are just constantly open. My other major complaint is that the drive has a spot on the side to attach a key chain but since it is placed in the middle of its side it is very awkward in pockets. This actually caused my key ring to break off the drive on my first day of having it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

My name is Allen from SanDisk support. I am appreciate your candid feedback that would help us improve our services. You can connect a small loop in the key chain connector and then attach a key chain to it. The drive is for Android phones and has been designed small to have it plugged in. Now that it broke off, please contact SanDisk support at 1-866-SANDISK or submit a support request at www.sandisk.com/support. We will assist you towards the best possible resolution.

Thank you,
SanDisk Support.

4 out of 5 eggsPotentially Useful

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: This is great for people who travel a lot, or don't spend a lot of time in front of an actual PC, but like to enjoy various media via phone and/or tablet. The micro USB gives it much more versatility than it would otherwise have.

Also, if for instance you have something on your phone that a friend would like a copy of, it's a lot easier to use this to transfer with than it would to hook up a phone directly via USB cable (which you'd have to carry around) and allow it to take its time downloading that brands software onto the PC so that you can search for it. Much simpler once you have the app installed.

Cons: USB 2.0? Really?

What year is it?

Also, the covers for both ends don't actually cover the holes themselves, and slide off easily (even just moving in your pocket). I wouldn't count on them for protection at all.

If SanDisk is looking for improvement, I'd just have one for the micro side and make it more secure. That's the one you really have to worry about.

As many people have mentioned before, this requires FAT32, which limits file size to 4 GB. For most media files that shouldn't be an issue, but you may occasionally run into a problem.

Other Thoughts: It's extremely hard to differentiate one thumb drive from another these days, and this at least is making an effort to be useful in a new way.

My strongest issue with this and all thumb drives anymore is the lack of 3.0 out there. In the few scenarios where I'm actually looking to add to my cache of thumb drives, I only look at USB 3.0 anymore.

Manufacturers need to catch up.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: Portability – This is a very compact drive. It’s not the most compact I’ve ever seen but it is small enough that it is as near as makes no difference.

Versatility - Having both Micro and USB Standard-A ports makes this a very handy drive.

Build - It is well built, not flimsy at all.

Software – Sandisk provides an app but not necessary to use (see Other Thoughts. I actually had to use a different app)

Usability – The drive is fast enough to be used well as additional storage for a tablet or phone. It was able to play music and videos on mobile devices

Compatibility - Decent number of devices work since Samsung support OTG and Sandisk provides a list which is easy to find on their website. http://www.sandisk.com/goto/dualdrive/

Cons: Compatibility – not all mobile devices have OTG capability

Covers – The sliding covers do not cover the tips the they are easily pushed back making them not very protective

Port Length – The ports are minimum length so if you have a case on your phone there is a good chance you will have to take it off to plug this drive in all the way.

Format – To use this at OTG it will have to be formatted in FAT32 which means 4GB file size limit. If you want this for Video, that may be a problem. If you are using it for music or other smaller file types it won’t be a problem.

Other Thoughts: Mounting/Visibility – Even though my phone (DROID Maxx) has OTG and I installed the Sandisk app BUT for some reason the drive would not mount it seemed. This is likely a ROM problem so I did not list it in CONS. Moto has had problems with OTG since they updated their phones to KitKat and I guess this one still persists. I was able to use the drive though using OTG Disk Explorer.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Niche Product

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: Amazingly small considering it has about 30GB of actual storage space plus a different connector on each end with sliding cover; and i suppose there's a controller chip of some sort in there, too. When you handle the device it feels robust, not flimsy.

A large single video file transfers pretty fast, and a collection of music files also moved quickly from the Sandisk to my laptop.

Sandisk Memory Zone app is free at the Google Play app store and it's useful for managing the available memory on your phone and offloading to this little Ultra flashdrive to free up space on your phone's memory.

Cons: Pricey for the amount of storage and for its average transfer speed. Faster and/or larger capacity drives are available at lower cost. So, it's all about the convenience of having a flashdrive with dual connectors.

The micro-USB connector that plugs into your phone is too short. Most phones have a case or "skin" and the tiny connector may not make full contact unless you remove the phone from its case - and there goes the convenience factor!

Works with a certain range of Android phones and tablets. If you're a couple of generations behind or if you have an iPhone/iPad then you're out of luck.

Other Thoughts: Tried this device on two PCs and and a Lenovo laptop with USB 3.0 ports. The flashdrive works fine for copying to the computer or simply viewing files and videos from the flashdrive. HD video played very smoothly, and it was easy to skip through a large folder of photos without any delays. Copying files from the computer to the flashdrive is noticeably slower which is typical of most flashdrives, but it still gets the job done.

When i tried it on a couple of different phones things were less perfect. Each phone had a case and the flashdrive's micro-USB connector didn't go in far enough on the phone with a hard case until the case was removed - not convenient! The second phone has a soft rubbery case and i was able to push the connector far enough in to make a good connection.

This product certainly has a market, yet it's probably a niche market rather than mainstream for two reasons. First, most phone charger cords have the micro-USB at one end and a standard USB on the other end, making it easy to transfer files to and from any computer. Second, most people i know have free cloud storage where they can offload/upload their photos, videos, etc. to share or to maintain free memory space on the phone. These two factors reduce the demand for this dual-USB device.

Having said that, we can applaud Sandisk for continuing to supply the world with a variety of flash memory devices to fill every need. You can't go wrong because they build their stuff well and hit almost every price point and every niche. At home we have Sandisk flashdrives, SD memory cards and SSDs, all of which are going strong after several years of use.

4 out of 5 eggsNice drive, but could be better

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: -It works with my Galaxy S4. Androids seem to be getting more locked down in regards to being able to transfer files to and from them. When I plug my S4 into my PC it is no longer recognized as a storage device for me to freely exchange files with. That has become a pain as I transfer files regularly between devices. This SanDisk drive has remedied that situation as I can transfer files from my S4 to this drive and then from the drive to my PC or other devices. This is of course more complicated than simply transferring files from my phone to PC, but I'll take what I can get.

-This works with my Nexus 7 2013 so long as an OTG app is installed. I tried Nexus Media Importer and OTG Disk Explorer and both get the job done. Nexus Media Importer seems to be more streamlined for media files while OTG Disk Explorer seems to be a simple file explorer.

-Sliding covers are built into the casing which protect both USB connectors.

Cons: -No USB 3.0 functionality. In addition to this drive, I also own a Corsair Voyager GO which features USB 3.0 (costs about $6 more at the time of writing).

-Transfer rates aren't great, generally around 12MB/s, occasionally I noticed up to 19MB/s. (Voyager GO via USB 3.0 manages 140MB/s read rates)

-Too bulky to plug into my Galaxy S4 without removing the phone's protective cover. The Corsair Voyager GO is much more slender and does not have this problem. Granted, the Voyager's USB 3.0 connector is exposed without the cover that this SanDisk drive features. Personally, I would sacrifice the protective sliding covers to make this more slender.

Other Thoughts: The drive (and others I've used like it) is formatted using the dated FAT32 file system. FAT32 limits file size to 4GB which limits my ability to store certain hi-def movies on the device. It can be reformatted using whatever file system you like, but many phones/tablets will have compatibility issues with other file systems. My Galaxy S4 supports exFAT but not NTFS. My Nexus 7 supports NTFS but not exFAT. This is NOT a limitation of this SanDisk drive, but an inability of phone/tablet manufacturers to properly support modern file systems. This is one factor limiting the marketability of OTG devices such as this.

Overall, I was pleased with this device. If it could plug into my S4 without my having to remove my phones case it would get 5 out of 5.

2 out of 5 eggsI wouldn't recommend it.

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: 30GB of storage space
micro-USB connection for phones and tablets.

Smart design. To fit so much storage space in such a small space with all the required controllers, the hardware is built in under the large USB connector as well as in the middle of the device. This helps save space and make the driver lighter.

Cons: Slow transfer rate.
More expensive than other 32GB USB drives.
micro-USB doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: I have seen other reviewers post transfer rates that are what you would typically expect from USB 2.0. The average for USB 2.0 is around 20Mbps, and the max a flash drive typically gets is around 44Mbps.

A problem with this drive, is that I was only able to achieve at best about 9.5Mbps transfer speeds, with 8Mbps being the average. This is very slow, and even transferring anything bigger than typed documents takes quite a bit of time. I tried using two different computers, a laptop and desktop. Both have Core i7 processors, and except for the keyboard and mouse on the desktop had no other USB devices connected.

The price is another big issue. Sitting at just below $30 makes it one of the most expensive USB 2.0 flash drives. Comparitively with other USB Flash drives on Newegg, you can purchase a 32GB USB 2.0 for around $11 or a 32GB USB 3.0 for around $15. In other words, they charge double the price of a faster flash drive of the same size.

The price and the transfer speeds I think could be justifiable, but the main feature of the flash drive fails to function. While connected to any phones or tablets I am unable to transfer data, and the device cannot even see the flash drive. I tried two phones and two tablets, all different brand and models, and none worked.

I have considered the fact that I might possibly have a defective unit. It works slow but has no real trouble working with the PC, but it is still possible.

Overall I really wouldn't recommend this device based off my usage with it so far. Not only is the drive slow, and the main feature does not work, but the price is really too much anyways. Small cables which allow you to connect any USB drive to your phone or tablet are only a few dollars. For around $15 you could get a flash drive of the same size, which performs much faster, and the cable for at most an extra $5. For that combination, $20 sounds a lot better than $30.

I appreciate the design that SanDisk tried to use, and because the slower performance I am seeing than other reviewers I still accept the possibility that my drive is defective, so I give this product a total of 2/5 eggs. However if others experience these issues, consider my rating only as 1/5 eggs for the product should then be considered a poor choice.

4 out of 5 eggsConvenient, but may require case rremoval

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: This drive offers a small and efficient design with pull-back access covers on both sides that expose either the USB or microUSB side. The area that doesn’t slide back has a very light texture to it. 32 gigabytes of space is enough for a decent collection of HD movie rips, music galore, or whatever might be your pleasure. USB2 Speeds.

Cons: This drive did not fit either of my phones while they were in their bulky otterbox cases, nor did it fit without causing a small tear in the waterproof rubber port cover of my GS4A. Removal of the case to attach the USB drive is not very feasible. If you have anything other than a very slim slip cover for your phone, or no case at all, you’ll probably need to take the case off to use the drive. This is my biggest caveat about this device and why one star was removed. it needs to include a short extension cable or have a longer microUSB connector. USB2 speeds, although that is what most droids are using these days.

Other Thoughts: This drive worked with my Samsung Galaxy 4 Active, but did not work with my older Motorola Atrix 2. The Samsung is listed as supported, whereas the Motorola was not. No surprise or disappointment there.

The drive was accessible under the phone settings. In the settings I could do the usual android stuff like see the available/used space, mount/unmount, or format the OTG memory.

This drive is a neat way of carrying those large files you can’t afford to waste space storing on your phone. I see this as being an extremely useful way to transport extra data with you for your phone and is a must if your phone doesn’t have expandable memory (e.g. SD card).

5 out of 5 eggsSanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive

This review is from: SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive Model SDDD-032G-A46

Pros: The compatibility of the SanDisk Ultra Dual 32GB USB OTG Flash Drive with PC and Android environments is great. Dual connectors, USB 2.0 plug style one end and micro-USB on the other end. Plug in the appropriate end and have quick access the data via plug and play. I was using the SanDisk Memory Zone app before and it provides an easy way to examine the internal memory, micro sdhc memory card, and this usb drive. It is an easy way to access data from both environments without the need to use an OTG cable. It worked flawlessly with a Galaxy Tab 3, but check the Sandisk web page for compatibility for other tablets.

The dual USB drive was used to read and move files 2GB in size at about 18 MB/s in a non-benchmarking file transfer on USB 2.0. There is no issue in playing 1080 res video files from either a computer or tablet. It does exactly what is expected and enables one to carry and backup large amount of data for easy access. The plastic end caps offer some protection and appear to be durable. The warranty is better than expected at 5 years, but it will likely be obsolete by that time.

Cons: It is very small with a neutral dark brown/black color for the case and it could be easy to misplace.

Other Thoughts: The drive is formatted as FAT32, so it has compatibility with different operating systems in the default state. The file size limit is 4GB. For transferring larger data files in a Windows environment, a quick format to NTFS allows larger file sizes. Simply quick format back to FAT32 and have access in Android or other operating systems.
