DDR2 1066 Mem Issues
- Pros: This PNY memory works on Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 motherboard with 8GB 1066 MHz "ganged" configuration - see other thoughts below.
- Cons: Between the memory manufacturers and retailers (Newegg and others) there MUST be clear information notifying customers that almost ALL manufactureres memomy MUST be overclocked to run at 1066 MHz. Customers who do not have motherboards capable of overclocking memory or have no knowledge "how to", this memory becomes a waste of their money since their MB's will default to 800 MHz.
For the customer - ALWAYS do your homework before making a purchase. Read the good and the bad reviews and you can find a common theme. Most of the times you might find a reference to a similar product - check it out and read those reviews.
With regards to reviews - some people are never satisfied with anything. Toss out those reviews and concentrate on reviews providing potential solutions.
Having a problem with Kingston HyperX memory was a new experience. It is great memory, however it did not work in this application and the PNY did. I will use PNY for the Gigabyte MB in the future.
- Other Thoughts: I originally used Kingston 4x1GB HyperX single channel sticks at 1066 MHz to configure MB noted above with a dual boot WinXP x32 and x64 OS's. Everything ran well until I upgraded to 4x2GB Kingston HyperX dual channel. At that time, IF I could get the bios boot to finish it would hang at the x32 WinXP startup and give me corruption messages. Having tried all the memory individually in slot one I discovered all mem chip were OK. I check all the overclocking provisions for the MB and all were correct. I tried a fresh install of WinXP x32 with 8GB installed and IF I could get by the bios halt the same WinXP corruption errors ocurred. Please understand that I am aware of the memory limitations with WinXP x32 at a little over 3 GB. The main issue seemed to be a bios/memory incompatability at 8GB with Kingston HyperX memory. I checked other postings for the PNY memory and decided to give it a try. It works without issue.
It works for me...
- Pros: Bought these for a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H motherboard. I put them in slots 1 and 3 (yes, 1 in each color coded channel). Then set to 5-5-5-15 and set the voltage to 2.0V. <<2.0V setting on my board results in a 2.064V actual reading>> I wanted to try at this setting instead of maxing out the voltage at 2.1V. Also "SET MEMORY CLOCK" setting to "Manual" and choose "X5.33".
I used PNY before, never had a problem. Runs flawlessly in my new rig.
BTW, I am using Athlon II X2 245 Regor CPU that came bundled with my motherboard. The speed of the memory is affected by whether the CPU is AM2 or AM2+/AM3.
Ran MemTest on my Ubuntu setup all night, was stable @ 1066mhz. No problems so far. I run Ubuntu Jaunty at the moment.
- Cons: NONE
- Other Thoughts: They auto-detect @ 800mhz on first post. I updated BIOS to the latest version (which was F5) per Q-flash instructions in the manual. Then loaded PNY specs in my "Pros" comments above. Next post, they are detected at 1066mhz Unganged. It's my understanding that if you fill 3 or all 4 slots, they will all be limited to 800mhz. I could be wrong. That's why I only bought 2 sticks of 2gb.
I read many threads about Unganged and Ganged. That's a subject for another day. All I know is that this computer is fast and hasn't sputtered once.
Was Wrong About These
- Pros: Nice heat-spreaders.
- Cons: These started out fine, but soon became unstable at 1066 MHz. At 800 MHz I have to run them at 5-5-5-15-23 for them not to lock up Windows 7.
- Other Thoughts: Pretty annoyed. Do not purchase these if your looking for 1066 MHz ram, they simply can't get the job done in the long term.
