5 out of 5 eggsGood Value SSD

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Lowest priced 120GB SSD I bought, but performance is up there with others.
Easy OS boot disk loadup with BlackArmor Backup with no issue at all.
Immediately recognized by an ASUS Z77 (intel) and a Hudson D4 (AMD) board.

Cons: None so far but time may tell

Other Thoughts: Considering the recent sale with $10 rebate, the price is very attractive. I upgraded several computers of mine with SSD as my boot disk. Among the Samsung, Seagate, Sandisk regular and extreme ii and OCZ, this one has the best value. The perfomance was among the best. WinSat assessment returns a 8,1 for sequential and random read with a Hudson D4 (AMD A10-5800K) board. This is exactly what I got with the 240 GB Sadisk extreme ii with an Z77 (Intel i7-3770K) board. The Sandisk likely would cost at least $20 more.
The SSD is a 9.5mm thick, whereas my other SSD's are all 7mm thick. It does not make any difference to me since I use it in a desktop, but to some people it may be an issue for tight notebooks or tablets.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked great, when it worked...

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Ordered 3 for my company. Good price and had a decent rating. The first workstation I built with it worked well.

Cons: Unfortunately the next 2 were not as great. The first one would short out the power supply, preventing the workstation from turning on, verified this by testing it in a 2nd workstation with the exact same hardware. The second one, the motherboard would randomly lose detection of it. Thankfully by the time I got around to building the second workstation, the first one's replacement (I had RMA'd it) had came in. Slapped the replacement (since it was a replacement, it was the exact same model) in there and has been working well ever since. Have now RMA'd the second one.

Other Thoughts: Seems like your taking your chances on these drives. It's very much hit or miss on quality. Since there are several SSD's that are similar in price and performance, I would suggest going to one of them. I tried to save my company a few bucks by going with this one. Unfortunately I was wrong and paid for it with wasted time.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing PNY customer service

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: PNY - a great brand

Cons: no cons this time

Other Thoughts: I recently posted a review about my 120 GB SSD which failed after 7 months of use. I just wanted to tell you about my RMA experience. Filling out the web form was a breeze, RMA was approved in a day and it only took 11 days in total since I mailed by defective SSD to receive the replacement. Well, the replacement was not refurbished, nor it was the same SSD I had. It was a brand new, 120 GB PNY Prevail Elite! Thanks PNY! While I am still bummed that the first one failed, PNY knows how to take care of a customer :)

1 out of 5 eggsPNY XLR8 PRO 120GB SSD

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Price, 5 year warranty with registration

Cons: After receiving and installing this SSD, I ran some benchmarks and found that the drive would max out at the SATA II max speed of 278MB/s. I cloned another SSD from another laptop that also used the SandForce 2281 controller with the exact same image and that SSD had no issues operating at over 500MB/s using the same ATTO benchmarking utility. I RMA'd the drive to PNY along with a copy of all my test results and they concluded the drive was running within specs. Unfortunately PNY is in the hardware manufacturing business and their ability to troubleshoot firmware issues is simply non-existent. As an IT professional, I’m highly restricted in trying to diagnose the issue myself since the PNY website only has one version of firmware (5.0.7) posted with no release notes. The SSD shipped with firmware 5.2.4 and the firmware upgrade utility that they provide doesn’t have the ability to back rev the firmware so I’m stuck. Where are all the other releases between 5.0.7 and 5.2.4??? There are no user forums for PNY SSD’s so there is no other avenue to get help. As an IT person, this is appalling. It’s as if someone turned back the clock about 20 years. So if you’re thinking of buying a PNY SSD, you should first come to terms that your purchase is a complete gamble. If it performs to specs you're lucky. If it doesn't you have wasted your money. There is no hope in getting this company to resolve any performance issues should you run into them nor can you resolve them yourself.

Other Thoughts: This company simply is not equipped to support SSD's. You're wise to spend a little more and go with one of the big SSD suppliers that understands firmware and can diagnose performance problems should you run into them. There is a reason why this company has only a handful of user feedback compared to the many hundreds or thousands of the name brands. SSD's are simply not their strength. STAY AWAY!! PNY, please don't respond to this review with the message to call your technical support or visit your website. I've done both of those and they're both completely useless. Oh, by the way, the technical support person also told me that their engineers don't talk to customers. Welcome back to the 90’s!

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far Awesome

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I love having this SSD. My computer boots up in about twenty seconds, which coming from an old HP laptop to my new setup is amazing. Works great as a drive to set up your OS and some used most often programs/games.

Cons: Could use a little more space, but can always pay more for that. For what I use it for it has plenty of space.

1 out of 5 eggsIt failed

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast SSD
5 year warranty
PNY is a good brand

Cons: I bought this 120 GB in July 2013 as an OS drive. Worked fine until few days ago. Very rarely, my PC would not boot, but 2 days before SSD stopped working, my Windows 8.1 Pro blue screened for the first time ever throwing the message: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. Two days after that, SSD was gone. After motherboard log on, instead of booting, the message comes on: DISK BOOT FAILURE. SSD never recovered from that. Doing RMA now.

Other Thoughts: I really wanted this thing to work. I gave it a favourable review when I bought it because it was a good blend of speed, price (with rebate), brand and warranty. It's just a bummer to have to re-install OS and all the programs. At least my files on it were backed up religiously. Bought Samsung 840 EVO. It's faster and has very nice SSD software, something PNY never had.

5 out of 5 eggsso far so good

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: fast, inexpensive, 5 year warranty.

Cons: 120GB is only good for OS.

Other Thoughts: I ordered it to upgrade the HD in my 4-year-old notebook. It definitely improve the performance of whole system. Just remember to turn on ACHI in BIOS for old machine. WEI is 7.7 for SATA II.

2 out of 5 eggsnot impressed

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Price, size.

Cons: Quality.

Other Thoughts: Purchased 3 of these on sale, 2 months later the first unit has died. I have purchased a couple dozen Samsung SSD's, a few Crucial, a hand full of Kingston - this and a single Kingston are the only units to have failed to date. I should've stuck with good reputation over price.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Pleased

This review is from: PNY XLR8 PRO SSD9SC120GCDA-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very fast, backwards compatible to SATA II (only at 3GBs), and boots up my OS completely in about 12 seconds.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this for a future build that I will be doing here fairly soon, but I went ahead and installed it on my 6 year old Dell XPS 410. I installed Windows XP on because the rest of my computer can not handle Windows 7. I have a few games install on this SSD and load times are amazing, big time on The Sims 3. This was a great update to my old computer. Couldn't be happier.
