2 out of 5 eggsDegrading performance

This review is from: PNY Prevail Elite SSD9SC120GEDA-PB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 10K Endurance

Pros: Seems reliable though have not had it more than 8 months (206 days power on time). Cheap for eMLC. 5 year warranty.

Cons: Degrading performance.
159.44MB/s read sequential.
42.40MB/s write sequential. I have seen many IDE drives beat this at its current write speed!
4K random read 10.11MB/s
4k random write 21.40 MB/s
Bad firmware support, PNY updated FW several months ago but still seem to neglect firmware updates with this device.
At this rate within 5 months or so a standard USB3 flash drive will out bench this SSD.
4.54TB read/4.93TB written.
206 days power on time.

Other Thoughts: 2x Segate Cheetahs 15K.5 73GB (SAS) LSI PCI-express x8 HW RAID controller..blows this SSD out of the water in terms of performance, and no performance degrading.
Each drive has well over over 2PB written/read from it

Going to RMA with PNY sucks that I will have to pay shipping (seems likeboth ways) , hoping to get a better performing unit. Will update review once or if a better SSD is sent. If you want a quality SSD go with the Intel 520s/530s or their enterprise class they cost more but you get what you pay for at least. Intel RMA is also pretty painless and they have a good SSD toolkit. PNY has none, I'm lucky that they provided me firmware with working TRIM.

Manufacturer Response:

PNY would like to apologize for the inconvenience our SSD has caused you. Please be aware that PNY offers a Warranty on all of our SSD products. Please contact our tech support at 1-800-234-4597 or visit http://www3.pny.com/support/newegg_emailSupport.aspx for assistance and replacement of your SSD product.

Regards,
PNY Technologies, Inc.

4 out of 5 eggsSpeedy performance

This review is from: PNY Prevail Elite SSD9SC120GEDA-PB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 10K Endurance

Pros: Shipping firmware is v 5.0.6
Assembled in USA of foreign components (hopefully that means the QA is higher than average)

Cons: Not as fast as Samsung 840 Pro
Does not fit some notebooks
PNY utility software is basic

Other Thoughts: Too early to tell if endurance lives up to claim.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

This review is from: PNY Prevail Elite SSD9SC120GEDA-PB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 10K Endurance

Pros: Read and write speeds exceeded my expectations. Raid0'd a couple and haven't looked back.

Cons: None. Never read anything in the specs about trim support, so I didn't expect to hear a lot of whining about it. Having mine in raid was not for trim support anyway.

Other Thoughts: Never read anything in the specs about trim support, so I had no expectations for it. Having mine in raid was not for trim support anyway. Most owners will never update the firmware themselves, and again, no trim support advertised, so any of you who know not what firmware updates are about, leave that to more serious hardware guru's. This is still a great drive.

3 out of 5 eggsDon't buy until PNY gets serious

This review is from: PNY Prevail Elite SSD9SC120GEDA-PB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 10K Endurance

Pros: fast Sandforce SATA3 controller
high end 10k P/E cycle Intel flash
sturdy chassis
temperature sensor
value for enterprise-grade flash

Cons: long track record of zero firmware support
still ships with known broken TRIM firmware 5.0.2
no mounting bracket
included SATA cable is ridiculously short
buggy & unreliable web presence for support
ships in foam sleeve vs antistatic bag

Other Thoughts: Until PNY gets serious about selling SSD products and accepts the reality that selling SSDs unequivocally means providing firmware support, they don't deserve success in the modern SSD market. Website and support contacts are mostly unstable or broken / don't work. Even attempts to contact via OEM reseller channels is not reliable. For a company that has been in around for so long, they seem to be a bit of a chaotic mess with priorities seriously out of order.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat drive but not so great

This review is from: PNY Prevail Elite SSD9SC120GEDA-PB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 10K Endurance

Pros: Good quality craftsmanship , read write speeds are right up there with the Kingston Hyper x 120GB drive. 10K endurance and a 5 year warranty.

Cons: Bad firmware trim is broken. If PNY would fix the trim issue this would be a great drive. PNY tech support is a joke, when I contacted them the first time they claimed to have no idea that the firmware was bad. When I contacted tech support the 2nd time the supervisor of tech support informed me that they were aware of the problem but had no intentions of fixing the problem in the near future and if trim was an issue for me then I should contact newegg and ask for an RMA , Which is exactly what I did. Thank you newegg for being understanding. The PNY tech supervisor also told me that if they were ever to have an update release on the firmware they would post it on their site just like they do for all of their products. I encourage everyone to look at their site. I found no updates of anything for any of their products of any kind.

Other Thoughts: If PNY wants to sell these drives they need to update their firmware. If they did that they couldn't keep these on the shelf.

3 out of 5 eggsAppears To Be A Great Drive

This review is from: PNY Prevail Elite SSD9SC120GEDA-PB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 10K Endurance

Pros: 10K endurance and decent advertised speeds. Three star because of price and firmware, see cons.

Cons: The picture shows Firmware 5.0.2 which is known to have broken TRIM. If PNY would update the FW I see this thing flying off the shelf. According to their site there is no update. What a shame.

I'd love to try it but not worth the risk unless they update it or Newegg just wants to donate one to me :)

Price is not really a con for 10K.

Other Thoughts: I have not really looked for a good review as any you find will be with the bad FW. I can't believe there is not another user review here. Has anyone bought one?

Like I said, I expect these to move they day of the update!!!
