1 out of 5 eggstwo lockups on my Macbook Pro and one on my HP Z800 Workstation

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC480GOPT-RB 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: cheap

Cons: No firmware update on web site. OS hang on Mac OS X 10.9 and disk IO stopped on Windows 7 with a HP Z800 workstation. I am using a third party Marvell PCIe controller that is a SATA 3 to get the most speed. No supplied software to migrate your OS from the mechanical to the SSD. Not SSD Tool box like Intel and Samsun have.

Other Thoughts: Skip this and buy a more expensive SSD that is $100 more, i.e. Samsung or Intel. If I could give it a 1/2 egg or No egg at all that would be a better rating than 1 egg.

4 out of 5 eggsSwitched to Cheaper NAND?

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC480GOPT-RB 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Affordable high capacity SSD.

Cons: Looks like they switched to "asynchronous" NAND chips - see "Other Thoughts" below.

Other Thoughts: First Kingston and now PNY have released value-priced SSDs which performed well when reviewed at several tech websites. Using "synchronous" NAND memory chips they achieved pretty good bang-for-your-buck Read and Write speeds. Later, they switched suppliers and began using "a-synchronous" NAND and Write speed performance is clearly reduced by a significant amount.

If you're a home user who surfs the internet, do email, play a few games or work with MS Office and similar apps then you'll probably be very happy with the overall performance of this drive because the Read speeds and access time (less than half a millisecond!) remain good and that's what makes an SSD feel fast.

If you do serious video editing or other Write-intensive work then you may wish to spend more for speedier Write performance.

Hopefully, the next generation of budget-price SSDs will have controller software which can maintain superior performance even with the cheaper asynchronous NAND .... or maybe they'll just use better NAND.

We have the 120GB version of this drive. The smaller capacity means there are fewer chips to Write to simultaneously, so the 120GB model is inherently slower than the 480GB model. But, we must have got an early version with the better synchronous NAND because we don't notice any loss of performance compared to our 120GB Sandisk Ultra Plus (another value-priced SSD).

1 out of 5 eggsSo far not so good

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC480GOPT-RB 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Cheap
Good large block read/write speeds

Cons: SMART warnings out of the box
Poor small block read/write speeds

Other Thoughts: Two drives in a row have had SMART Soft Read Error Rate warnings pretty much out of the box. I used Bit Flock for the SMART interpretation and crosschecked the results with other similar services. I don't know if Newegg received a bad batch of drives as the SN of the drives were very close. Either way it does not speak highly of the QC at PNY. Newegg RMA'd the first drive and the second one is on its way back to PNY. Hopefully I will get a drive back that I can trust.

1 out of 5 eggsDefinitely using cheaper components

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC480GOPT-RB 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Did not fail out of the box

Cons: Slow Speed vs all other SSDs I have owned. Ran Crystal Disk Mark on my I5 2500K motherboard. Results are as follow:
Read(MB/s) Write (MB/s)
------- -------
Seq 486.9 289.7
512K 429.8 181.3
4K 30.33 20.42
4KQD32 219.8 113.9

For Comparison against my PNY XLR8 240GB on the same computer and same SATA controller:
Read(MB/s) Write (MB/s)
------- -------
Seq 474.2 317.9
512K 431.9 317.2
4K 31.99 84.78
4KQD32 171.1 274.2

The results, when compared against other Sandforce based SSDs I have owned, look more like asynchronous NAND than synchronous NAND. Regretted my purchase.

Other Thoughts: Should have stuck with a higher end SSD.

2 out of 5 eggsNot up to advertised performance

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC480GOPT-RB 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - It is a SSD after all. Will out perform any mechanical.
- I got it for very cheap. $145 after $20 rebate.

Cons: Crystaldiskmark result show far below advertised performance. I guess "up to" 60,000 IOPS means you have to be lucky? Anyway, following is the results that i had.

Seq Read/Write: 511.8/343.8 MB/s
512K Read/Write: 452.4/342.9 MB/s
4K Read/Write: 26.96/19.33 MB/s
4K QD32 Read/Write: 222.8/97.38 MB/s

97.38 MB/s on 4K QD32 indicate about 24000 IOPS

Other Thoughts: Testing environment
i5 2500K - Biostar z68a+ MB
16 GB ram 1333

5 out of 5 eggsSimilar to XLR8 Performance

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC480GOPT-RB 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Lowest price for 480GB capacity.

Good performance for the price compared to others costing up to $50 more.

Cons: none at the price

Other Thoughts: The biggest weakness of affordable SSDs seems to be that they slow down when they get about half full or more. You can significantly improve that by setting aside some extra space on the SSD , known as "over-provisioning".

If you have plenty of unused space on your SSD you may allot some of it for extra over-provisioning.

In Windows, use DiskManagement (Control Panel / Administative Tools / Disk Management) to reduce the size of the main partition (usually named C: Windows) by anything from 20GB up to 100GB. For example, in a 480GB drive reduce the C: partition down as low as 380GB. Then create a new partition for all the unused space and format it. After formatting, delete the partition you just created (yes, Delete it!). Now you have that unused space which is blank/empty and your SSD will use it to maintain performance of the larger main partition (C: Windows).

This trick is not necessary. Without it, your SSD should run just fine for years. But, if you want to maintain random Read/Write performance as high as possible, then giving it extra empty space to work with when the drive begins to fill up will definitely help to wring every ounce of speed from the drive.
