Solid state hard drives are increasingly popular, but suppose you don't want or need to replace your internal drive? Lexar has an answer with this external SSHD.

Give up to 16 GB of your data the rugged portability of a solid state drive, and reap the quiet reliability benefits of a drive with no moving parts. Uses the ExpressCard interface for easy installation and removal from your laptop. It works with Windows' ReadyBoost, to speed the loading of your software, and it is Vista compatible. Then there's the price, which is one of the lowest I've seen so far for an internal OR external solid state hard drive.

Do your research and see if this drive is a good match for your requirements. Once you make up your mind this is the one, come on back; we'll be here when you need us.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It has a lot of space and isn't too costly. It fits perfectly in my Toshiba Laptop. It's just about the only worth-while ExpressCard I could find. Works perfectly on my Vista, XP, & Ubuntu 8.

I use it for backing up my documents and music, etc. It has a nifty program on it that can manage backing up for you.

Cons: The back up program crashes if i add/remove any other removable storage device (like my USB HDD). It's kinda slow as well.

Other Thoughts: It does exactly what it says. If you need an easy way to store some data, this is perfect.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat tool for the DJ!

Pros: Pretty decent storage capacity despite it's size. Fits perfectly flush on my Macbook Pro, and runs very smoothly. I can fit a generous amount of songs for my sets along with all of my "crates" stored within. This is great for the literal On-the-go DJ with access to a Macbook with an ExpressCard slot.

Cons: As with the other reviews, the write times are a bit slower, but that all depends on how you use it. I really don't have an issue with the write times since all I do is store music on it, and let the reading do the rest of the work, which worked out greater than expected.

One thing that kind of disappointed me was that I was not able to install Serato into it (even though it takes up a very insignificant amount of space anyway), but you can install other 3rd party programs just to free up space and RAM.

Nothing else to complain about...

Other Thoughts: My opinion...great for DJ's that would like the extra storage as well as a last-minute set that might come in handy--only if you have access to a laptop with an express card.

2 out of 5 eggsMisleading perhaps?

Pros: Its memory?

Cons: When you think SSD, what do you think of? SATA/SCSI solid state flash memory disk right? That would be cool... Instead, this is simply an express card to usb adapter with a usb based flash disk installed in it. Nothing cool, nothing fancy, just an extremely limited use flash drive that fits only an express card slot. Oh, and the connection is'nt all that great on OSX, keeps coming on and off from time to time....

Other Thoughts: Buy a regular usb flash disk instead, it'll save you money and a headache.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It is handy to have as data storage and you dont have to worry about it getting knocked off like a thumb drive.

Cons: Write speeds are too slow for readyboost , thumb drive is much quicker.

Other Thoughts: Bought it from Lexar , should have got it from Newegg for $15 less.

4 out of 5 eggsRead/Write speeds

Pros: According to support in Lexaristan, the ExpressCard SSD has read/write speeds of 15MB/s read and 14-17MB/s write. This seems odd, and kind of slow. Numerous CF cards on Newegg have much higher read/write speeds. Unfortunately, very little support documentation is available for the Lexar SSDs to give more helpful info.

Cons: See above
