- Pros: I had a 7 year old Sony Viao 17 inch P-4 laptop that were were using at home as netbook in the den. I had upgraded and rebuilt the PC a few times, but found the 4200 internal PATA drive was slowing the machine down and the bottle neck.
Since it was still in good shape, I decided to invest the $135 and buy this drive. Reinstalled Windows XP Pro and other programs.
All I can saw is WOW! What a difference. Now the machine is very responsive and has extended it's life a few years. The increase in performance was not due to a fresh install of Windows. It had been rebuilt 8 months earlier with a fresh install of Windows XP Pro.
- Cons: As I mentioned, we use this as a netbook and do very little with it. The 32 GB size and slower MLC write time was not an issue.
If you have a PC that you will use for a moderate amount of disc writing, I would spend the extra money and get the other version of the drive with faster write times.
- Other Thoughts: I am a big advocate of Diskeeper degrag software as it keeps hard drives in top shape, while operating in the background.
They had a new version that incorporated some new features for solid state drives. Downloaded a trial version and tried it. Worked fine. Then tried an older version designed for mechanical drives which I had a seat license. The older version seemed to work just fine with the solid state drive.
I recognize their are some pros and cons about using a defrag program on a solid state drive, but in my limited experience with this one PC, it seemed to improve overall machine performance.
Fast on iBook g4
- Pros: Definitely speeds up opening programs in 10.5 Leopard. Has made opening and running applications faster and more responsive. Read performance is amazing compared to 4200 RPM HD. Makes running a G4 in leopard feel much, much quicker.
- Cons: None. Faster, better, and more reliable that iBook G4 1.33ghz 40GB 4200RPM hard drive.
- Other Thoughts: Worth the upgrade for G4 ibook or powerbook user!
Made an old laptop faster for a while
- Pros: Initially made my wife's Dell D600 much faster to boot.
- Cons: Slow write speed.
- Other Thoughts: After the disk was nearly full (~1GB free) my wife complained that the web browser was slow. I think this was because of the slow write speed. Putting back the regular disk made web browsing faster. Of course the boot time went up. This is OK since we leave it on most of the time.
