5 out of 5 eggsIt flies

This review is from: Transcend SSD340 TS128GSSD340 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This thing is pretty fast. Bought it for my son's PC to replace an old 5400RPM mechanical and the difference is night and day. I have an older OCZ Octane Sata II in my own system and the differences in loading is very noticeable. I might have to purchase another one for myself unless I curb my envy.

Adapter to install into your desktop is included which is great. Every 2.5' SSD should come with one IMO

Also included is a software package (downloaded from the website) to update the firmware and clone your drive. Worked without a hitch.

Cons: None...as of yet.

Other Thoughts: Scores a 7.9 on the WEI if that means anything to you(my OCZ scores a 7.3 fwiw). My son's specs:

Now to see if it lasts.

5 out of 5 eggsGood SSD

This review is from: Transcend SSD340 TS128GSSD340 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This drive works really well. It seems responsive and my desktop now boots fast. Comes with a bracket so it can be installed in a desktop drive bay with little problems.

Cons: not the easiest drive to erase. (This could be true of any SSD)

Other Thoughts: I was worried after reading SSD reviews (of any brand) and see the drive fail within a week or month of purchase according to the purchaser. I have had no problems with the drive except for some difficulty erasing the drive, but this could be my inexperience with this type of drive and not necessarily the drive itself.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works

This review is from: Transcend SSD340 TS128GSSD340 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The drive works. You can save things on it just as it's intended to be used.

Cons: None. Like another reviewer mentioned, there isn't much information so it's like taking a stab in the dark :)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive!

This review is from: Transcend SSD340 TS128GSSD340 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This drive is my new favorite at the lower-end price point. Synchronous NAND, extremely fast performance (real world), DRAM buffer, warranty, price, JMicron chipset, the list goes on.

Cons: None whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: Very refreshing to see a new chipset enter the arena of mainstream drives. Frankly I'm tired of seeing the same old rebadged Sandforce drives saturating the market. I've had more than my fair share of trouble with Sandforce-based drives, and the concept of not having a DRAM buffer seems odd to me.

The newer Sandforce based drives I've had good luck with, but I'm ready to move on.

Most budget SSD's always have some compromises, some I can live with, some I can't. I won't pay the same price for a TLC drive as I will a MLC (2 layer cell), despite the apparent reliability of the newer TLC offerings. So given the array of MLC drives out there, this stands out among the rest by offering synchronous NAND, DDR3 cache, SATA/3, etc. at a GREAT price. The controller seems rock solid, no complaints there.

While Windows Experience Index scores are about as useless as the next generic benchmark, this one scores an 8.1, which is the highest I've seen 128gb drives rated in said benchmark. I've had several new-to-the-market SSD's score below that, so take it for what it's worth.

ATTO scores and other benchmarks seem to back up the manufacturer's claims.

Thumbs up all around. I should also add that this is a very solid, well built unit, unlike some others I've used, which would hardly serve as a paperweight and would blow away in a strong wind if you're not careful (ADATA SP900 Premier Pro, and there are others).

It also comes with a 2.5" adapter which is a huge bonus, given that most case manufacturers STILL ignore the fact that the 3.5" format is dying in the performance world (not for storage obviously).

4 out of 5 eggsSolid SSD

This review is from: Transcend SSD340 TS128GSSD340 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Decent, consistent performance
Runs cool, even after writing 50GB of data
Inexpensive
No initial problems
NOT Sandforce

Cons: No long-term reliability data

Other Thoughts: I'm relieved we are finally seeing budget SSD's that are not Sandforce-based. It seems Intel is the only manufacture to figure out the 2281, as every other SSD I've had that was Sandforce based has failed (specifically, OCZ and ADATA drives)

This JMICRON chipset just feel more consistant. No lagging or slowdowns, no jumping mouse cursor during random garbage collection, and most importantly, no complex compression algorithms that will certainly trash your indirection table during a power failure.

Overall for the price, happier than I am with the Crucial M500 120GB (which is also solid, but notably slower)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive - 2+ month update

This review is from: Transcend SSD340 TS128GSSD340 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: VERY impressive drive overall. It is now my main laptop's boot drive. Impressive performance for the price paid. Don't think you will regret getting this drive.

Cons: Minor: Wished Transcend provided better utilities such as secure erase with the drive, but a deal breaker at all.

Other Thoughts: Was my main desktops boot drive till I got the refurbished OCZ Vector SSD, which I am now breaking in - Another impressive drive.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Drive

This review is from: Transcend SSD340 TS128GSSD340 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, Fast, Fast
Reasonably low cost
My Windows 7 computer now boots in a few seconds. That's right, SECONDS.
Application load time is unbelievably fast too.

Cons: None that I have found, but I have only had this drive for a few days.

Other Thoughts: For the cost of this drive, you'd be foolish to not get it. The performance of my lowly Shuttle computer (i3, 8GB RAM) system is now on part with my office workstation. This drive is 2.5x the speed of my previous (Kingston V series) SSD. Using a SATA-3 connector in my system, here is the performance I'm seeing.
Sequential reads - 457MB/second
Sequential writes - 131MB/second

5 out of 5 eggs1st Impressions - VERY Good!

This review is from: Transcend SSD340 TS128GSSD340 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Synchronous NAND. DDR3 DRAM Cache. Mounting bracket and screws. Free downloadable cloning software from company site.

Cons: Company site does not provide certain details in specifications. Do not know how much DRAM is used for cache. Unsure what the estimated MTBF is.

Other Thoughts: This is the 4th SSD I've bought, and is the most impressive of all. Transcend is not a common name in the SSD business yet, but the product performance so far is very impressive for the price tag of $71 (Iron Egg price match.). The package comes with a 2.5 to 3.5 mounting bracket and screws. A cloning (and more) utility software can be downloaded free from the company's website (I did not clone my previous SSD. Experience has indicated a clean install provided better overall performance.).

I did quite a bit of research before buying this item given it is a not common name for SSDs. Studies on Synchronous vs. Asynchronous NAND performance can be found on the Internet. In REAL WORLD application performances, Synchronous is quite a bit faster in many areas. Looking at performance statistics alone that almost everyone uses, can provide many false impressions. Comparing this unit to the Kingston V300 120MB SSD (5.05 firmware) is like comparing a high performance engine to a regular engine. The controller JMICRON JMF667H is also not a common one. I know Western Digital uses it in its new WD Dual Drive – a different kind of hybrid SSD/HD. As such, I am confident with the capabilities of it.

Registration of the item provides an extra month to the common standard 3 year warranty.

For the 4 SSDs I owned (Transcend SSD340 128 GB{Sync NAND}, Kingston V300 120GB{Async}, Refurbished OCZ Agility 3.20 120 GB{Async} and Refurbished OCZ Vertex 2 100GB{Sync) - latest bought to earliest bought). I rate the performance in the following high to lower order – Transcend, refurb Vertex 2/refurb Agility 3 (Pretty similar), Kingston V300. (My performance measures being system boot times, application load times, application operation smoothness, game playing smoothness.) One of these days, I'll get a Toggle mode NAND SSD [Toshiba, Samsung(?), New OCZs] and test it out.

For those not familiar with SSD preparation and installation, please read my review of the refurb OCZ Vertex 2 (Dec. 9, 2013) or the refurb OCZ Agility 3.20 (Jan. 15, 2014). I think it will be worth your while for a more trouble-free installations. Give the reviews a thumbs-up if you find them informative!

Good luck!

P.S. For those concerned with SSD wear, try out primocache disk caching software. Pretty impressive piece of work.
