DESCRIPTION

ssd340

Performance Upgrade

Transcend's SSD340 is built using high-quality synchronous multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory for enduring performance and features the next-generation SATA III 6Gb/s interface, DDR3 DRAM cache, and a powerful controller. As a result, the SSD340 makes everyday computing tasks, such as booting up your computer, launching applications, and transferring data, quicker than ever before.

In order to allow straightforward installation in notebook computers, mainstream PCs, and today’s advanced Ultrabooks, the SSD340 features the industry-standard 2.5" form factor. Yet, it measures just 7mm in height and only weighs a mere 52g. Moreover, the SSD340 offers cool, silent operation and excellent resistance to shock and vibration, further proving that it’s the ultimate upgrade to your standard rotating hard drive.

ssd340

Low Power, Fast Response

The SSD340 maximizes notebook battery life when not in use thanks to full support of SATA Device Sleep Mode (DevSleep). DevSleep ultra low power state conserves more battery power than current power saving features such as standby mode by shutting down the SATA interface completely. And with a remarkable response time of less than 20 milliseconds, you can start working on your computer again almost instantly.

ssd340

Built-In Reliability

To keep your Transcend SSD running fast, clean, and error-free, the advanced SSD Scope software application is available to download and work with the SSD340. SSD Scope allows you to monitor SSD340 health status with S.M.A.R.T. technology and enable the TRIM command in the operating system to help maintain optimum write speeds, all from a single user-friendly tool

For operating systems that do not support the TRIM command, the SSD340 offers an aggressive garbage collection and recycling system. To further increase the lifespan of the SSD340, built-in wear-leveling and Error Correction Code (ECC) ensure continued reliable data transfer. SSD Scope also includes a convenient System Clone utility to help make upgrading your existing computer to the performance boost of an SSD340 quick and easy.

5 out of 5 eggsInstantaneous Gaming

Pros: Caveat: This is my first ssd and I do not track benchmarks.
With that said I can tell you I am starkly aware of the difference between mechanical disc and ssd. I used to have to wait for new maps to load in BL2, Just Cause 2, Skyrim etc but now load screens very rarely appear. The OS behaves like a psychic freak with applications and tasks happening instantaneously. Also sleep and wake happen in a fraction of a second.

Cons: Man for the price and space I couldn't possibly list a con.

Other Thoughts: Right now I have the dreaded Win8.1 video and graphic software and about 5 awesome games on it with room to spare. I still have a 1tb mech for the db stuff though. Oh and I'm not using a video card.

1 out of 5 eggsShould hav known better

Pros: Computer boots up

Cons: VERY poor performance. Computer hangs, stalls, freezes and everything else.

Other Thoughts: I researched this brand as I'm not familiar with the name. The reviews seemed promising so went with it. Should have stuck with what I am familiar with. Will never get this brand again.

5 out of 5 eggsTranscend's got a winner!

Pros: *Excellent Random Access Times
*Low Power Usage (such as most SSD's)
*All around good performer.

This is a good budget buy.. can't go wrong.

Cons: *None - for this price range, performance is right where it should be.

Other Thoughts: Compared to other SSD's in this price range the performance is dead on. I've seen products in this price range perform higher & lower but this seems to be the average. Which really is very acceptable. Below are my benchmarks using a Samsung 830 256GB Pro on my AMD 970 chipset based system.

Transcend SSD340

Transcend - Avengers Rip

5 out of 5 eggsGreat 1st impression

Pros: Installed without a hitch

Blazing fast boot and load times—I know it is expected of an SSD but this is the fastest I’ve used out of bunch of them including Samsung, Crucial, OCZ, Corsair, Intel, and Kingston. This is based on watch-timed boot and reboot times rather than benchmarks. Apps load instantly as the do almost all SSDs.

Comes with a nice little 2.5 – 3.5 drive caddy. I didn’t need to use it because the case has a built-in slot but it is nice to have on hand for future builds.

Only time will tell as to how it will do over the long haul in terms of longevity and maintaining something close to this performance little but I don’t plan on waiting very long before grabbing another—probably on Black Friday.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Boot 11 sec, reboot ~ 15 sec. This isn’t so special compared to most of the SSD reviews I’ve read in recent months but I know the ones I’ve used have not come close to the numbers I’ve read about . I read one the other day claiming a boot times of 3 sec! I wonder if these are perceived times are actual watch times. As I said earlier, I’ve used most of the top models including Samsung, Crucial, Intel, etc. and they are slow in comparison (although plenty fast enough for me.
I know there are other considerations but is somewhat meaningful to me considering this system has the same base software package I use on 90% of my builds: Win 7-64 Pro or Ultimate, Nero Burning Rom, Malwarebytes, CCleaner, and Firefox. For this one I also installed Win 8.1 Pro—not dual boot but a separate image that can be restored in 5 minutes with True Image. Win8 boots a little faster but I still prefer Win7 otherwise.

Amazingly the CPU for the system I just installed it in is only a $60 Pentium G3240 3.1 GHz Dual Core.

The whole thing:

Intel Pentium G3240 3.1 GHz Haswell 54W
8GB (2 x 4) Apotop 1600 MHz: 9-9-9-24 1.5V (first time for this brand – nice!)
Transcend 128GB SSD
500GB Seagate Baracuda 7200 RPM
Asus H81M-D Plus LGA 1150 Micro ATX Mobo
Antec NSK-3180 Micro-ATX (smaller than avg for this category)
Antec Green 380W 80 Plus Bronze PS

5 out of 5 eggsSolid SSD with 3.5inch Mounting Kit

Pros: I don't know how fast it is. At least, it is much faster than my old hard drive. I am glad about this upgrade.

Cons: However, the software comes from Transcend didn't work for me. The system clone successfully finished but I couldn't boot from it then. Instead, I re-installed the OS and software packs.

Other Thoughts: Still a great buy, thanks Newegg

5 out of 5 eggsGood for SATA2

Pros: Cheap
Fast Enough

Cons: Nada

Other Thoughts: I got this for an old mini-itx build that's in the living room. It was running off a usb3, so this is much, much faster.

It's running centos7. Previously it was stuttering all over the place, now it's quite zippy. No reason to get a top of the line SSD if you only have SATA2. Doubt the difference would truly be that much, anyways. The leap from usb3 to this SSD is much greater than a medium grade SSD on SATA2 vs say, a samsung pro on SATA3.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing!

Pros: -Great speed
-Very nice price for a 128gb ssd

Cons: Absolutely none so far!

Other Thoughts: My OS is installed on it. Windows 8.1 boots under 5 seconds.
I've had it for almost a year. I use it quite a lot and the health indicator is still at 99% (after installing windows 7, windows 8.1 and opensuse)
