2 out of 5 eggsDecent drive

Pros: Drive is fast and makes a improvement in battery life on my laptop.

Cons: Since switching to this drive my machine upon restart has completely lost the partition about 6 times in less than 2 months. Contacted customer support since I do not have this issue with traditional drives. Will have to see what the response is.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Hailochild,
I'm sorry that you are having problems with your new SSD. I would like to help you troubleshoot this issue. Please contact me at the email address below.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for the price!

Pros: Excellent speed for the price. I use this in an HP HDX18t Laptop with a 500GB 2nd drive as my storage. This thing has performed very well! In Vista 64 its...

144.1MB peak read
92.7MB peak write
1ms > acces time

Keep in mind those are on a system that's been installed for 5 months now. How long the drive has been operating can affect its performance. The drive will easily meet your expectations.

Cons: It's not the fastest on the market, but I understand that's not a con. (I can't stand the people who think that the price or performance is a con. If it's not fast enough, buy a faster one, if it's too expensive, perahps you shouldn't buy it!)

Other Thoughts: Check the specs, and you'll know exactly what to expect. I own 4 OCZ Solid Series 60GB drives as well. All perform well! For comparision sake, my 500GB WD 2.5" drive that's also in the laptop performs 82.5MB Read and 82.4MB Write with acces time of about 14ms

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad drive on Windows 7

Pros: Fast, Quiet, no problems thus far...keeping my fingures crossed. The new Windows 7 loaded with all my programs with this SSD drive boots in about 45 seconds and my 300GB velociraptor system with Vista Ultimate (also with everything loaded) boots in about 120 seconds

Cons: not much faster than my 300Gb Velociraptor in specs but does outperform the Velociraptor in bootup. I will explain performance comparisons in "other thoughts"

Other Thoughts: I am running the brand new Windows 7 that is to be released in October and I will have to say this drive is not bad. I would be much happier for the price if it was 256Gb instead of 128.
CrystalDiskMark on my machine:
Velociraptor performance - 86Mb/s read and 96Mb/s write
Patriot Warp 128MB - 150Mb/s read and 88Mb/s write

one thing to keep in mind here:
this disk doesnt have to be optimized because it has a .4ms access time compared to the 5ms access time of my velociraptor.
these are the crystaldisk mark ratings for small blocks....wow!!!!:
300Mb Velociraptor: .785MB/s read and 2.13MB/s write
Patriot Warp 128MB: 18.52MB/s read and 2.4MB/s write

as you can see the little bouncing around that takes place in drives the Patriot blows away the Velociraptor.

Now for my total conclusion:
this is an awesome drive..but....128GB is too small. Either wait till the 256MB comes down in price or raid two of the 128MB's together.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear J_G
Thank you for your insightful and detailed review of our drive. I look forward to more reviews from you and your future relationship with Patriot Memory.

2 out of 5 eggsif its sounds to good to be true!!!!

Pros: it does read fast like it claims....

Cons: windows vista takes forever to install.....cant truely multitask like you should be able to.....this drive only worked for about 8 hrs and some corruption happen to the boot area for vista........it did work right outta the box like they claim it to...but there was some weird stuttering and pause's.....NO TECH support from Patriot......i did do all the reg and services edit's...that i actually found on OCZ website with step by step instructions....it did help a little.....i can't believe i wasted my time

Other Thoughts: i took this thing right back to FRY's.....

DON'T WASTE UR TIME WITH THE low end SSD's.....seriously..this is the 3rd low end one i'm tried.....

pony up and get the INTEL x25 series....it's worth it...just read all the reviews.......maybe the faclon or vertex i haven't tested those yet.....i'm waitin for my x25 thou....it has the best reviews on newegg!!!

good luck PATRIOT...ur gonna need it...u just lost another customer!!!!!!!!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

Patriot Memory has heard the concerns that our users have presented in regards to the way the the standard SSD functions. Due to limitation of the on board controller lacking a memory cache, those issues remained consistant. Patriot Memory has now produced the Torqx line of SSD. An SSD with an on board cache of 64 MB.

Please do not hesitate to check PatriotMemory.com for more information about the Torqx SSD

1 out of 5 eggsNo Support

Pros: None

Cons: No Support available. When you call, you get a voicemail asking you to leave a message but they never call back.

Other Thoughts: This is the last time I will buy any Patriot Products.

5 out of 5 eggsSSD Optimization Techniques

Pros: I have these in a 3 Drive stripe set on Vista 64 and the performance is incredible, but only if optimized properly.

Cons: I wish they were see-through and had Tron-like lights zipping through them to know when they are working!

Other Thoughts: --- SSD Write Speed Optimization in Windows ---

Disable Write Caching!

Disable automatic defrag

Disable HDD Optimization Services: Windows Search, Superfetch, Readyboost, and Indexing

Disable your Pagefile: IF you have enough RAM

Disable system restore

Disable Short File Names: Go to Start - Run - Type "fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1"

Disable Timestamp for Last Access: Go to Start - Run - Type "fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1"

5 out of 5 eggsFinally an SSD drive that delivers

Pros: Yes it is bit high on price when comparing to Hard drives, but concidering the benefits of what you are getting it is well worth the investment. it has 10 times the life expectancy if you compare to regular hard drives, and it is silent. nearly doubles performance from my previous Raptor 10k RPM Hard drive, and cheaper in price.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: with the next paycheck i am buying 3 more to do a Stripe raid for even more performance.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

Having a RAID array with your SSDs really brings out the speed and performance of the drive. With the buffer, it eliminates the "stutter" of the smaller writes and gives the user an all around performance boost!

5 out of 5 eggsFastest Boot-up ever

Pros: The drive is fast and saves me a lot of time in boot-up time. my data is safer, now that I read SSD has 10 times longer life when comparing with hard disks.

Cons: I like to see 500GB, and 1TB SSD drive at good prices someday so I can add one more to my system.

1 out of 5 eggsNO GOOD

Pros: I installed this on a late 2008 Macbook Pro.
The first couple of days were great, fast booting and fast application loading. UNITL IT STOPPED WORKING PROPERLY with in a WEEK!!!

Cons: When waking from a sleep, the endless beachball.
When quitting 2008 MS Word for Mac, the endless beachball.
Don't use any email utility, can't comment on that.
5 days later, boot failure.
This is unacceptable.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

I apologize for the less than excellent experience you have had with this SSD.

Please contact the support team: support@patriotmem.com so that we can investigate your issue and if need be, start an RMA to replace the failed drive.

2 out of 5 eggsNot good

Pros: When it worked, read performance was good. The price dropped a little compared to when I bought mine two months ago. It doesn't take much too optimize it unlike SSDs that use internal RAID controllers.

Cons: It does pause when doing multiple things, it can get really annoying but the fast read speed kind of makes it for it. However after 8 weeks, the SSD started crawling, it was so slow, it should have been a warning sign for me because it died 5 days after. One night, I turn my laptop back on and I get a stop error (BSOD) that tells me that critical boot files are missing. Whatever I restart my system and now I get an "OS not found" error, and that repeatedly. I loaded the Vista disc to use the recovery console to repair my boot.ini and whatnot if that was the culprit and surprise, not only it doesn't find any Windows installation but it doesn't even detect the SSD. I then try the SSD in another computer, once in a SATA port, once mounted with a SATA to USB adapter; Windows detects it and cannot explore it without formatting. Now it gets interesting, I went to disk management and my SSD that was formatted in NTFS now shows up as a RAW file system, so the whole drive is somehow corrupted.

Other Thoughts: Cons continued:
I sent an RMA request and still waiting for a response. In the meanwhile I wanted to delete everything off the disk before shipping it for RMA. However KillDisk fails to find the SSD and gives continuous error. I can't get the SSD to show up anything in Linux either, so it's dead. That SSD is therefore a block of memory chips that are holding all my information that I cannot access and I wish that I could smash it but since I have to RMA it I can't.

Can't really say I would recommend it or not, but what I know is that with all the optimizations that I had done to reduce the random writes that wear out the drive (such as disabling indexing, superfetch), it still allowed a 1,500,000 hours MTBF SSD to die in 9 weeks. Got myself an OCZ Apex 128GB as I prefer taking time optimizing for performance rather than backuping, reinstalling Windows and trying to get data out of a dead disk.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

I see that you have already started the process of an RMA on the drive. If you could please send me the information on your RMA (Technical reference number or RMA number) I would be happy to investigate the situation and make sure you are updated with the status of the claim.

Please send that information to dsorrentino@patriotmem.com so that I can track down that info.
