According to the my research using other web sites, I am a bit confused.

I have an HP G71-340US laptop which has a maximum RAM capacity of 8GB, and I currently have the original factory 4GB which is 2x2GB SO-DIMM.  Some web sites say that my laptop can take PC2 6400 DDR2-667 200 pin SO-DIMM, but some web sites suggest that PC2 6400 DDR2-800 200 pin SO-DIMM would work instead, so I guess my question is more technical than specifically about this product.  Is there a potential compatibility difference between DDR2-667 and DDR2-800?  Will only one of those potentially work with my laptop, or could I expect both to be compatible?

I have the skill to install it, but my technical knowledge of specifications is practically nonexistent.  Any clarity you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

There is no compatibility issue as long as the new memory you install is DDR2. Where the problem might be is having access to the higher bus speed that the new memory you want to install has versus the factory memory.

The factory memory has 667 bus speed while the new memory has 800 bus speed. The bus speed of your main board determines what speed your memory runs at. For instance, if your main board has 800 or higher bus speed then you will have access to the full speed the new memory is capable of. But if your main board is 667 bus speed then the new memory will automatically downgrade itself to 667 bus speed. You will still have the full 8gb of ram but it will not operate as fast as it is fully capable of.

Go to the HP web site.
Look up your laptop.
Click the button for parts and accessories.
Then memory.
If they are trying to sell you DDR2-800 then yes this is the right memory.
If not then no.
Honestly, if you cant figure it out for yourself, you have no business upgrading your own hardware. call or take it to a professional.
Also one piece of advice, if you don't have a 64bit operating system, this wont do you any good.

Is this compatible with Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop?

This is designed for a desk-top computer and motherboard.  I would be shocked if it would fit a laptop.
