1 out of 5 eggsJunk!

Pros: Price

Cons: Bought two of these. Slow performance and boot are dead in less that 1 year. Lost all my data. Very disappointed.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap Storage - Slow Transfer

Pros: Inexpensive, decent construction. Good for smaller file storage/transfer.

Cons: The drive is very slow. I copied a 38 gig VM file in 30 minutes. You do the math. Same file with Samsung SSD in an external USB 3 case, 2 minutes.

Other Thoughts: I read where others complained about how difficult it was to get the cap off. Well, it's not difficult, and it's by design.

You need to squeeze the thin sides of the drive and pull. If you look closely, there's a small latch on the inside of wider side. So if you press there, you're closing the latch tighter.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow writes

Pros: Good price for such a large capacity. A small form factor that doesn't block adjacent USB ports. The read speeds are great, it sustains 80+ MB/s without too much trouble.

Cons: This drive writes S-L-O-W. I often don't get more than 5 MB/s out of a sustained write (one big file). Furthermore, in the process of writing, it gets very hot as well. I fear it will shorten the life of the drive.

Other Thoughts: This drive is decent if you want to store a lot of data and you don't need to write quickly. I knew that this would likely be the case when the vendor failed to give any specs on read/write. I will definitely not buy drives from Patriot (or others) again if they don't give read/write speeds.

3 out of 5 eggsLarge capacity Speed not impressive

Pros: Large capacity cheap drive. It works for what I want.

Cons: It is slow and gets very warm transferring files. Heat and size are a trade off here I think.

Other Thoughts: I needed a large thumb drive for archival purposes. The slow speed and heat are therefore not deal breakers for me. For what it is a cheap, large thumb drive, it is good. Do not expect more.

As usual, Newegg shipped the unit in good time, and it arrived in great condition.

2 out of 5 eggsBetter choices out there

Pros: capacity

Cons: Very Slow. Formatted for NTFS. Transferring files 2.5-5 gig in size, write speeds never exceeded 25mb/s. Average speed was 12mb/s with 20 files. Tried on both and AMD based machine and INTEL machine both with on-board USB 3.0. Other 3.0 thumb drives give me write speeds as high as 118mb/s on these same machines, often average 60-80mb/s.

Other Thoughts: I've had great consistent fast write speeds with similar cost PNY drives.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed in the performance of our Slate Drive. With that being said, please be aware that our Slate drive is designed to be a cost-effective solution. For something more performance-oriented, we would like to direct you to our Supersonic Magnum or Supersonic Rage.

Kind Regards,
Patriot Memory Support

3 out of 5 eggsPainfully slow

Pros: Price was good.

Cons: This USB drive does not have any light built in....
I tried to copy 60Gb photos to it and it takes close to 2 (two) hours to copy. My old Lexar 128Gb USB 2.0 thumb drive dance circles around this one.

Other Thoughts: But its works. Slow, but you still can put it large amount of data to it, if you have time... This is why 3 eggs only.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing size

Pros: On sale.

Cons: One reason I went with this was its user review reported post format size at 119gb. Well I just received mine and it only has 115gb. Was the previous reviewer mistaken or is mine damaged?

Other Thoughts: I don't mind that it's slower since it's meant to be storage at this size, not rapid transfer.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We’ll be glad to assist you. This is actually correct.

In regards to the capacity discrepancy, please note that because the file management system and system files will take some capacity, the available capacity is smaller than the announced density. There can be up to a 10% overall variation due to NAND, Controller, Firmware and ECC (error correction coding).

Here’s more into details regarding this:

5 out of 5 eggsGets warm, but seems fast.

Pros: Pretty small, cap fits tightly, It seems to be pretty fast, although I have not tested the speed to get the numbers yet.

Cons: Got a little warm while copying some files. I measured the temp, and it got to 148.5 degrees F.

Other Thoughts: I like the drive, and if it holds up, I will use it often. It was only delivered an hour ago.

We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.

5 out of 5 eggstotally satisfied

Pros: cheap ($45), big (119gb formatted)

Cons: cap falls off when in use, easy to lose

Other Thoughts: loaded over 100gb data large files - fast !! (100+mb/sec), smaller files go slower (about 15-25mb/sec) but overall I am totally satisfied. never heats up. initially showed 119gb, but couldn't load anything ... it was not formatted yet, after format it runs super!
