2 out of 5 eggsSD card slot did not work

Pros: It has the ports I wanted; SD card, microSD card, and several USB's

Seems to work well with Linux (Xubuntu 14.04) out of the box

Cons: SD card reader did not work at all.

Getting it installed was a little frustrating. The cables attached to the device only just reached the motherboard, with little room to spare. Requires an open USB header on the motherboard, an open SATA socket on the motherboard, and a connection with the Power Supply. Adds to the mess of cables inside my computer. Not that any of this could be avoided or changed in the product, but I was kind of hoping for a device that could run simply off of USB, like an internal USB hub of some sort. I was unable to tell what type of plugs and requirements the device needed before I bought it, so I just crossed my fingers and hoped that it would work.

Its not USB 3 but I didn't buy it for fast transfers.

Requires an adapter to fit it into the 5.25" bay.

Other Thoughts: I got this for my custom built desktop, running Xubuntu 14.04, in order to read/write to SD and microSD cards and to get some more USB plugs for the front of my case.

It requires an open USB header on the motherboard, a SATA connection, and a connection to the PSU; luckily I had all three, but I did not know these were required ahead of time.

After spending some time getting it all hooked up, I tested it out.

The USB's all worked fine. In fact they worked even if you did not plug in the SATA cable; makes sense that the USB plugs would only require the USB header on the motherboard.

To get the media card readers to work, I had to plug in the SATA cord into the motherboard. I was actually hoping that the card readers would run over USB so I could avoid this and keep my SATA ports open for other devices, but its not a big deal. What is a big deal, however, is the fact that the SD card reader simply does not work. The microSD card reader works just fine; I plug in a microSD card, and it immediately appears ready to be mounted in Xubuntu. However I have tried multiple SD cards, and there is no response when I plug them in.

I do not have other types of media cards to test out the other readers, and have not tested the eSATA port; I never intended to use the device for these purposes.

I bought this because it gave me extra USB ports, and could read/write to SD cards and microSD cards. I've got 2 out of 3 of the functions I wanted, but the inability to read regular SD cards is already throwing a wrench into my plans and causing me headaches, especially with the holiday season and frequent use of cameras and devices that rely on these cards. I was wary of the mixed reviews for this product, and thought I would take a risk on it. I only got slightly burned, as opposed to others' whose products were DOA. But it still hurts, just a little. Definitely not buying this again, and I will have to be a little more cautious about buying Rosewill products from now on.

4 out of 5 eggsUSB ports fail.

Pros: One 3.5" device with card slots, usb, and e-sata, perfect.

Cons: The USB ports do not work. There is not enough power going to this. Tried wit a 500W and 600W PSU.

Other Thoughts: Release an updated version where the USB ports are on its own wiring set.

4 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted

Pros: All the slots you'll ever need.
3 USB 2.0s and an eSATA with a 5V supply.

Cons: MIcro-SD slot never worked when I got in in April 2009. Wasn't an issue because I had a micro-SD to full-size SD adapter.

Died just a few months after its 5th birthday. RIP

Other Thoughts: I'm not going to take away stars for it dying, it happens. The power to the USB still worked, but connecting anything using the bus would not register being plugged in.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Came with silver faceplate.

Cons: I purchased 2 of these several months ago while on sale. A customer needed a card reader so I installed the first one.
CARD READER 1 - Everything booted up fine and windows found it ok but as soon as I plugged an sd card in, nothing. I unplugged the card and plugged it back in, still nothing. Tried another sd card with data on it, windows found the drive but then it disconnected immediately. I jiggled the card a little and it would connect but then disconnect immediately. I pulled the card out and rebooted the PC. With the card out it now connects and disconnects all on it's own with nothing plugged into and after a reboot it totally locked the system during post. Disconnected it from the usb header and system is fine, tried another usb header same thing, just locks up the PC.
CARD READER 2 - I decided to open up the other one I had in stock and installed it outside the case to test. It worked ok but as soon as I opened the drive to move files over it would disconnect again. tried several sd card and same thing.

Other Thoughts: I usually purchase several card readers when they are on sale to keep in stock so they tend to sit around on my shelf for a few months before using. I have always had great luck with the other Rosewill card readers I've purchased but this particular model is a failure and I don't recommend it at all. Just comparing the 5 egg to the 1 egg reviews proves that this item has a definite quality control problem, good luck getting an operational one. Mine are going in the trash.

4 out of 5 eggsmicro sd card slot useless

Pros: esata

works

Cons: 5v power plug is practically useless since nothing uses 5v. But I knew that going in, so no eggs docked

there is a gap between the face plate and the actual card slots. For SD cards and larger, this is no big deal. But for the micro SD card slot, this makes it practically useless. Micro SD cards always end up getting lost inside the card reader since you can never hit the actual card slot. I definitely docked an egg for this because i bought this for 2 reasons: esata and the micro sd card slot. Also, once you end up getting the micro sd card in the actual reader behind the face plate, almost the entire card is in the reader and you need needle nose pliers to get it out. Poorly designed.

Other Thoughts: There is a blue led on the front that is always on. My pc stays in my office, but if yours is going to be in a bedroom or living room, take that into consideration.

My case has usb 3.0 ports on the front, but no esata on the front. So I wasn't too concerned about this reader being only usb 2.0. Mostly just wanted a front esata port. The micro sd card slot was a bonus (in my mind), so I only docked 1 egg.

1 out of 5 eggsNot bad, but already dead...

Pros: Worked great, as it was supposed to for a while, then it randomly stopped. I can only get power to the unit. I can't get any usb drives to recognize off of it.

Cons: Stopped working.

Other Thoughts: Great overall, but it died a lot sooner than it should have.

1 out of 5 eggsUsed once the died. Almost took my PC with it!!!

Pros: Looks nice. Has 2 face plates.

Cons: Broke within 1 hour of first use! NOT impressed. Sadly, I was unable to install the unit sooner and I am 3 days AFTER my 30 day purchase window.
More junk from China. Contacting Newegg AND Rosewill customer support.

Other Thoughts: I am sick and tired of wasting money and adding more junk to the already overfull landfills. I demand better products!!!
