5 out of 5 eggsRock solid, high performance, excellent deal

Pros: handles a tad bit of overclocking to match higher bus speeds for OCing on the mobo, has run solid for over 14 months now

Cons: This set did not mix well with a similarly Spec'd SPD RAM from another brand - the other kit was of lesser capacity and this was enough... but this is the first time I've ever seen this happen.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdated! (Ignore previous review)

Pros: Fully supports XMP2 profiles, and the SPDs are recognized properly in all motherboards I've used them in.

My old ones came with SPDs of 1866! So, I am running them at 1866, but at CAS10 though. Hey, throughput and random read/writes are faster than under CAS8 and 1600mhz. I'll take that!

Cons: They aren't the pretty red ones, but much cheaper!

Other Thoughts: My previous review indicated that they were not recognized properly. That's incorrect, my old mobo just sucked. The Patriot memory I mentioned that worked at tRFC 100 actually did not work. They must be raised to 124 or higher as well.

So, my previous -1 egg was incorrect. Hopefully I redeeming Mushkin here. :)

4 out of 5 eggsOnly use in very new X58 mobos

Pros: Very good cooling design (if you have air flowing over them, even from an angle or from the side).

Top notch technical support and feedback.

Cons: The SPD timings were not recognized by my 2.5 year old X58 mobo (mid 2009) with the latest bios and XMP enabled. Sadly, they only run at the Intel default profile of 1066mhz (133x8). :( Overclocking the Bclk to 200mhz gets me 200x8 which equals 1600mhz, but my CPU/QPI cannot take that speed (it's not an overclocking mobo).

Mushkin's support stated that the tRFC had to be set to 120 or higher. But, my 2.5 year old mobo only goes to 100 max. "You need tRFC over 100 to 4 GB chips" they said. Well, my Patriot 4 GB chips (see other thoughts below) work at 100 tRFC.

Other Thoughts: I bought these for the 8-9-8-24 settings (CAS 8). This is a new series of memory chips within the last year or so that have special high-speed ram (some run them at 6-6-6-18).

But, older XMP (Intel's Extended Memory Profile, which enables 10 or 12 multipliers on the timings) mobos can't handle the newer chip series.

Instead, I purchased the Patriot Sector 7 Viper II - PC3-12800 1600mzh CAS9 chips and got full 1600mhz recognized in my bios with 133x12 SPD timings. They actually have two versions: one at CAS9 (older memory), and the newer CAS8. The CAS8 has the exact specs of these Mushkin's. So, I did not take the chance and went with the CAS9 version of the Patriot memory. Worked like a charm.

I gave this 4 eggs because of how good Mushkin is as a company and for their email-based technical support. Even though slow, they replied within 48 hours as they said they would with good diagnostic steps.
