3 out of 5 eggsFirmware support . . . falls short . .

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA III Synchronous MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: For the price, this seemed like a good replacement for my boot/system disk in a WHS-2011 home server system. I was able to clone the oversized HDD to the Chronos without mishap, and the cloning software made sure to leave the SSD in proper alignment.

Despite being hooked up to an SATA-II controller, the drive is still almost three times the speed of the WD Blue 320GB it replaced.

Cons: And here's the "bad." It's probably a good, reliable SSD. But when you see what I'm reporting here, you may wonder.

I was troubleshooting various errors and warnings in my server event logs, and they've been entirely eliminated. Even so, I thought it would be best to update the firmware for the Chronos. Please note the remarks by "Travis" in an earlier review.

The reason that the firmware updater won't see the Chronos when your BIOS and Windows both do, is a really stupid reason: Mushkin wrote the software to work only when the drive is configured in "AHCI" mode. You cannot update the firmware in RAID mode. You have to connect it to a controller set up as AHCI, update the drive, and move it back to the box with the RAID configuration.

This is really, really dumb. Why is that?! Because I've had SSDs made by Intel, Patriot and Samsung -- and their firmware updater software works whether those drives are configured as RAID or AHCI!! How can three competitors have it right for at least a couple years, and these guys at Mushkin drop this nonsense on users of their Chronos drives?!!

Maybe that's why I see a similar Chronos 60GB model for $150 in the Egg inventory here.

Other Thoughts: The drive seems to work fine so far as boot/system disk for a server OS -- without the firmware update. So far, I say!! But this is a really thoughtless shortcoming. Nobody is going to buy a 60GB drive except for a low-occupancy server OS -- OR, and more likely -- to use the SSD in an ISRT caching/HDD-acceleration arrangement with a motherboard chipset featuring ISRT. And how do you configure your SATA controller in BIOS to use ISRT? You set it up in RAID mode!!! Then -- to find the firmware update requires AHCI mode? That's really vacant!!

5 out of 5 eggsVery satisfied

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA III Synchronous MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: My boot times, including the BIOS are down to 17 seconds. The moment I type in my password the desktop immediately comes up. Chrome, LibreOffice, and just about everything else also opens in under a second. I am running Ubuntu 13.10 on this drive.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: This is my first SD I purchased to put in my daughter's new machine and we have been very happy with it. I have / mounted on this device and /home on a spinning platter.

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Fantastic Mushkin SSD

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA III Synchronous MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Popped this into a MacBook Pro to replace a dead hard drive, and the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard installer saw it right away. Absolutely no setup problems; it just worked.

The performance really is amazing. This is an old 2006 MacBook Pro with a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo and 1GB RAM, but you wouldn't know it from how snappy and responsive the system is now! It feels like a whole new machine.

This is like my 4th Mushkin SSD purchase, and I've yet to have any problems with the brand.

Cons: Price per gigabyte is still pretty high, as with any SSD.

Other Thoughts: Seeing how snappy this made a 2007 MacBook Pro with 1GB RAM makes me very excited for the performance benefit I could get in my own laptop. But unfortunately I need 750GB, and those SSDs are still really expensive.

1 out of 5 eggsFast but poor quality

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA III Synchronous MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very fast,OS ran great when i got it on there

Cons: Had a hard time getting linux OS on there, had to plug in it a different SATA port for it to work, after a week of intensive programming on a Linux SSD died. SSD does not like linux OS or distros.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA III Synchronous MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Blazing fast, threw it in my old rig while I await the second half of my order. Even at SATA-2 the difference is quite noticeable. Can't wait to get this into my new build!

Cons: Mushkin firmware updater is unable to detect the drive in my old system. The current firmware version is unknown, as is any performance boost the newer firmware might provide. However, I don't anticipate these issues in my new (or any other recent) build.

Other Thoughts: None

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 1 year

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA III Synchronous MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Acceptable performance.

Cons: Failed exactly one year later.

Other Thoughts: I have SSDs for OCZ, Samsung, Corsair, and Mushkin. The Corsair Force GT has been the best overall. The Mushkin is the only one that has failed.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drives

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA III Synchronous MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I have 2 of these drives running in raid for a year now and Windows 7 still boots up in about 5 seconds. Windows scores them at 7.9 . Games load real fast. Video editing and recording is smooth with no pauses or frame drops.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: These drives help keep my tower cooler and quieter compared to my old raptor drives.
