1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Low cost compared to other brands.

Cons: Failed after two weeks of light use in a laptop. Showed no significant speed increase after being installed, even being slower than the original HDD. Would occasionally fail to appear as connected, before completely failing to be detected at all. Could not even be detected by a desktop via an external enclosure.

1 out of 5 eggsnot recognized in MBPs

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: none

Cons: The one shipped to me is not recognized (blinking ? folder on power-up, or no drive found when booting to an install DVD) in a 2007 17" MacBook Pro, a 2010 MacBook Pro, or late 2011 MacBook Pro. It only works with a NewerTech universal drive adapter (how I was got the ? on power-up), which is not where I need it work.

5 out of 5 eggsReview update, still great after 17 months

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I wanted to follow up on my earlier review. I've now had two of these drives for almost 18 months: 240 GB in my laptop and 480 GB in desktop. Both are still working error free. I don't use the laptop much; I got the SSD to extend the life of the laptop. Successful in that regard; laptop is now fast enough for another couple years.

I use my desktop for work, dual CPU, 16 GB RAM, about 10-12 hours a day. I have not had so much as a hiccup from this Mushkin. This is a secondary SSD. Primary is a 120 GB which I had to replace under warranty in less than a year.

So, I highly recommend these Callistos if your system only has SATA II, like mine.

Cons: Nothing new has popped up since my original review.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fastest shipping I've ever had, ordered yesterday received today.

Cons: Needed some kind of mounting brackets for my laptop, used a folded piece of paper in it's place.

Other Thoughts: newegg gets a five, product a four (only because of lack of brackets)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Beautifully!!!

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Installed on my Late 2006 MacBook Pro. Fast! Boot up is less than 15 seconds and programs run faster than newer machines (we have at work) with regular hard drives.

Cons: NADA!

Other Thoughts: I still have my Late 2006 MacBook Pro (2.33GHz Core 2 Duo) that I only use when as home on the sofa. I still have use for the 15.4" screen when I need to do work from home. I had installed a 320GB 7200RPM drive last year and while it ran pretty good, it still was not fast. This Mushkin Drive is FAST! Boot up in 15 seconds. Programs run without a hiccup. Couldn't be happier. I got this on sale for $275. Can't beat that!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value for Dual Xeon boards

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Easy installation.

This is a good value SSD for those using Dual boards that have not caught up with SATA III. These drives SATA II interfaces will soon EOL but older Xeon boards still use SATA II because of familiarity and stability. A good buy to increase your boot speeds on an already very fast Xeon setup.

Cons: None that I can think of

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value...when it works.

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Works like a charm, when it works (see below). Great value when you consider the capacity and performance you're getting for the price.

Installation was a breeze, my pc case has 2.5" bays so I had no need for the 3.5" mounting bracket. Boot happens in a flash and loading times in my games have been drastically reduced.

Cons: The drive failed completely after 2 months. Since it was past Newegg's return window (30 days) I had to submit my RMA directly to Mushkin. I did so on their website and got an response via email within the hour requesting proof-of-purchase. I submitted the requested documentation (also via email) and then heard nothing from them for 5 days.

I called them to check on the status of the RMA and they said they never got my email and asked me to send it again....which I promptly did. I received a response shortly thereafter approving the RMA and shipped the defective drive out to them. About a week later I received a brand new drive in the mail.

Other Thoughts: I rated the drive 4/5 despite the failure because I'm extremely happy with it's performance and the RMA process was painless (delay notwithstanding). I would have gotten a replacement in half the time if I was more proactive in following up.

If the new one fails again I'll be back to modify my review.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: As title says, the drive works great, just as I expected. Just ran the ATTO disk benchmark, and for large block values, the IO is in the ballpark of the max rated rate. (Leave Direct I/O checked to bypass Windows disk caching; with disk caching enabled, the results are absurdly high.)

If your motherboard is limited to SATA II, then this drive is currently an incredible bargain.

NewEgg delivery was very fast and damage free. Almost didn't include this statement because I now almost take for granted that NewEgg treats customers fantastically. Other vendors do not always do so, so I should give NewEgg the acknowledgement they deserve.

Cons: Mushkin included a 3 1/2 inch drive adapter, which is nice. Unfortunately, for me it is utterly useless. My tower case has mounting holes for 3 1/2 inch drives that are 4 inches apart. My hard drive went it without an issue. But the included adapter has mounting holes that are 6 cm apart, about 2 3/8 inches.

Fortunately, I ordered two 3 1/2 mounting brackets from NewEgg when I bought my first SSD, so I had a spare. If you are adding this SSD to a tower case, you are likely to need a separate mounting bracket. Measure.

3 out of 5 eggsHoping it works

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL480GB-DX 2.5" 480GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: plug and play, solid feel, comes with bracket

Cons: I bought two of these to set up in a RAID 0 array and upgrade my two WD Green 500Gb HDD's already set up in a Raid 0 Array. At first I thought I was doing something wrong... turns out that ones of the drives would randomly stop working while in use. The only way I could reset it is by unplugging it from the system. Then when I finally said I'll just use the drive that works on its own.... that one failed too. I sent both back for a replacement. I really hope they work. I'll update the review if it does......
