2 out of 5 eggsGets to hot too handle

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU240GB

Pros: holds 240gb data on a usb drive

Cons: heat. gets too hot to touch. Also slows down considerably under load. If you puke 240GB of data for sneaker net transport of data it will slow down to <10 Mbs and become to hot too touch or even pull out of usb port when done.

Other Thoughts: For long time permanent use and to keep from returning it, I re-fomatted as FAT32 and stuck it on my PS3 USB for games, or use it to hold music for the usb ports in my car. Using a USB 2.0 port slows it down enough limiting the heat issue some. it still gets to warm too touch even if inactive. I would not buy again nor recommend. Better to have a SSD with an enclosure than this.

5 out of 5 eggsFollow-up Review

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU240GB

Pros: After 8+ months of use, I have yet to have any problems. This little beast is still the fastest USB drive I've ever used. I often use it to back up complete systems before repairing/rebuilding a computer.

Cons: I have no cons. I made this purchase with the knowledge that the faster transfer rates ALWAYS means increased temperatures, which in turn will slow those rates down a bit. The physical size of the drive obviously doesn't allow room for any type of a cooling option other than my own awareness. The manufacturer has built in the safety aspect by throttling the transfer speeds as the memory chips start to overheat, keeping the drive from cooking itself to dysfunction. I have always removed the drive after huge data transfers and yes, it does get pretty warm. I believe this drive will serve me well for quite a while as long as I'm consistent with monitoring the heat factor.

Other Thoughts: If you're the type of person that tends to plug a drive in and leave it, then I do not recommend this one for you. But if you use common sense with your hardware, this is a very (nice, fast, huge) piece of equipment to keep in your arsenal of tools.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Mushkin.
We appreciate your feedback and support.

2 out of 5 eggsSignificant Thermal problems

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU240GB

Pros: When the drive's cool, it can copy 160MBps. It has very good capacity.

Cons: I too confirmed undocumented throttling down to 20MBps when the drive was constantly used for more than about 6 minutes at a time. I saw this behavior on both large single file copies (i.e., 20GB+) and while copying my music collection over (lots of 3 to 6 meg files). Drive perf was pretty consistent at the start, and once it heated up, it instantly fell to 20MBps, cooled off for 4 minutes, then ran at full speed again for a few minutes, heated up, slowed down, etc... The net result was equivalent to a mediocre USB 3.0 thumb drive that ran at about 100MBps ± 5MBps.

As for that claim that it runs at 450MBps/445MBps? I absolutely don't believe it. This drive's R/W performance (and bad behavior) was completely consistent on 4 different PC's I use, all of which have Intel-based USB 3.0 support that supports UASP. I didn't see even close to the 340/290 that Anonymous mentioned, so either the test conditions or the test hardware must be considerably different. I'm using Windows 7 on one box and Windows 8.1 on the others (maybe these 'advertised' speeds are a Linux thing)...

Anyway, like Patricia's comments, I'd actually like a USB 3.0 drive that performed consistently at USB 3.0 speeds. I can already get plenty of high capacity drives that work at ~20MBps, so the fact that Mushkin would sell a product that throttles down to 1/32 of USB 3.0's full potential speed is nothing short of ridiculous. Mushkin should have at least informed customers of the throttling "feature" - which I am dead certain is going to impact anyone who actually tries to use the full capacity of this drive - or take advantage of the speed.

Since USB 3.0 theoretically supports 640 MBps (5 gbps), I was pretty sad when I only saw 160 MBps. I was actually annoyed when I saw it drop to less than USB 2.0 speed to "cool off", so I returned the drive to Newegg and even got the privilege of paying a restocking fee (since technically the drive wasn't broken, it just didn't perform as advertised). Thanks, Newegg & Mushkin!

Keep that in mind! If you're OK risking mediocre and inconsistent performance with this purchase, and you're OK paying Newegg's restocking fee if you don't like it, then go ahead with a purchase.

To Anonymous: This is no SSD, my friend. Your comment "There is no reason to expect this drive to run at room temperature under full load" is absolute nonsense. Why would you even say that? The specs don't say anything about thermal load throttling or inconsistent performance, and I've never seen an SSD where I didn't have the full expectation of solid, fast and consistent performance. If you're testing your hardware with that expectation, then I can't trust your test results, and I don't see how anyone else can, either.

Other Thoughts: 21,052 MP3 files (130GB) took this drive 1370 seconds (23 minutes) to copy. That's a little over 100MBps. That includes all the throttling slow downs, etc...

Thanks, Muskin Rep, for confirming the thermal throttling "feature" you should probably be noting in your product specifications. I would also LOVE to see the hard data showing those insane 450MB/s read speed test results. Got anything to back that up?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

I apologize that the product didn't meet your expectations. Because this product uses a SandForce controller, the transfer speeds may vary depending on the type of data being written. We use ATTO with queue depth of 10 as our benchmark for read and write specs (which has become a popular utility in the industry). Our implementation of thermal management was designed to be as non-intrusive as possible, but certain heavy duty usage patterns may invoke the throttling whereas typical usage patterns will not.

Please don’t hesitate to email us at support@mushkin.com or call us at 1.800.569.1868.

Thank you for choosing Mushkin Enhanced.

5 out of 5 eggsBest drive on the market

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU240GB

Pros: This drive is extremely fast, durable, portable, and has a great capacity.

On my tests I was getting about 340 MBps read, and 290 MBps write. Not the 450 and 445 as mentioned, but that has to be expected. Depending on the USB 3.0 controller on a motherboard, and the speed of the system, (trying to copy from a HDD as opposed to copying from a SSD) and other factors, the performance of the drive will vary. That being said, it has a very good controller for a flash drive, and will be very fast in most cases. It will almost always be faster than a HDD.
It is also very sturdy, but I would have liked to see anodized aluminum, instead of paint.

Cons: Wish the painted aluminum was replaced with anodized aluminum, but I like the paint very much.

Other Thoughts: Also it would be good to mention heat on the drive. After stress testing it for about an hour the drive became warm. Like all electronic components. There is no reason to expect this drive to run at room temperature under full load. Of course it gets hot, there is no other drive that won't, and that shouldn't be a reason not to buy.

Besides, you're already here. You must be looking for a flash drive, so go ahead and buy it. This flash drive (portable SSD) is amazing.

2 out of 5 eggsVery noticeble thermal design performance issues!!

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU240GB

Pros: 240GB in a reasonable amount of space. The "cool metal enclosure" is not a Pro, it's a design requirement (more info on this below).

Cons: Thermal design problem is not noted or documented by Mushkin. Under "normal" consumer usage, you may not see the speed decrease due to poor thermal tolerance, however, if you're using this device in a warmer than average room OR doing large file copies (10GB+), the drive will heat up significantly and the transfer speed will slow to a crawl. Here's what we proved:

Room temp (70°F) Ventura copying a 45GB file from an SSD over UASP USB 3.0 = 155MB/s to 158MB/s.

After the drive got very warm, performance dipped to 120MB/sec. The drive continued to get hotter...

After the drive got "very" warm, the performance tanked and dropped to 18 to 20MB/sec until the drive cooled off a bit, then performance shot back up to 120MB, ran for a while, then tanked again down to 20MB/sec. The speed never got back above 120MB/sec once the drive was hot.

To verify this was a thermal design problem, we cooled the drive during the file copy (same files) and while it was super slow at 20MB/sec, we used Freeze-It to chill the metal enclosure to about 40°F. After about 10 seconds, the performance shot back up to 155MB/sec, just as it had when we first started testing with a room-temp drive.

We purchased 2 of these devices and did the same tests on both drives, and verified the behavior. With the drive cooled-down, the performance was rock-solid at 155MB/sec, with no dips in performance whatsoever during the entire 45GB file copy -- we just had to keep the drive cold during the entire copy process.

Conclusion: Mushkin used a metal case of this drive to act as a heat sink, not to make it "durable" or "cool". Unfortunately, certain use cases will turn your USB 3.0 UASP-capable Ventura drive into a 20MB/sec snail, and that's a pretty major reason to steer-clear of this device if you require consistent, reliable performance.

NOTE: The source device for our file copy tests was an M.2 SSD on a 4-lane bus (no physical HDD's were used). We verified that there were no physical bottlenecks in the copy process, and we verified maximum performance by copying these same test files to an SSD via a USB 3.0 bridge.

Other Thoughts: I've never seen a thumb drive that needed a fan. This one does, though. Perhaps Mushkin should have included a can of Freeze-It with each Ventura drive?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Sonartech,

My name is Sue and I’m with Mushkin customer support. I apologize for the issue that you’re having with our 240GB Ventura. If the drive gets hot from a very large transfer or high ambient temperatures the drive will throttle to ensure that the drive does not get so hot as to cause damage to the drive. Our technical support team is also available if you have any further questions or concerns. Please don’t hesitate to email us at support @mushkin.com or call us at 1.800.569.1868

Thank you for choosing Mushkin Enhanced.

2 out of 5 eggsA gamble drive

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU240GB

Pros: Fast, but not as specified - I can see consistent 150 GB/sec read/write speeds. This is nowhere close to "Up to 450MB/s".
I don't really care about "synthetic" tests, I want to see real world usage speeds.

Metal casing is an excellent idea, but it's design falls short - having seams all around means it is not moist-proof, and USB connector is flimsy, cheap, barely holding in place, feels like it will break off with usage.

Cons: Quality. The metal casing is sturdy, but it has seams. USB connector is loose, holding only by it's solder to the circuit board.

Great idea, but needs improvement for real life scenarios. I don't want my data lost to a broken off USB connector, or to an accident water spill.

A gamble drive. Bought two of these, one died after a month passed. But since I added improvements to their "design", the drive is no longer in its original form and probably not serviceable.

Other Thoughts: To improve quality and durability I had to superglue the seams around the casing, including the wide opening with USB connector. After a month one of the drives died on me, light won't lit up.
If this drive were made with quality in mind as it should, I would not have to modify it. So I blame poor design of the drive.

5 out of 5 eggsMushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU240GB

Pros: 1) Extremely fast
2) Great price per gig

Cons: I've just started using it so I haven't experienced any cons yet.

Other Thoughts: I've used many usb drives and am very impressed with speed this has for transferring files. Just a quick comparison... My Kingston and Patriot both take about 60 seconds to transfer 1 gig of data. This one copied the same files in 5 seconds. So Nice!

2 out of 5 eggsPoor speed

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 240GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU240GB

Pros: first unit was DOA
new unit works, barely

Cons: Speed

Other Thoughts: Speed not NEARLY what is advertised. My two Supersonic Magnums were much, much better investments and are functionally far faster.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Anonymous!

Is this USB being plugged into an USB 3.0 port? From our experience, these USB Drives will not function at listed speeds in an USB 2.0 port.

If you continue to have issues, please contact us at Support@Mushkin.com so we can address your concerns.

Thank you, and be well!
