4 out of 5 eggsGreat product - Four Purchased, One Broken

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: Best price from a well known brand.
Great read/write speeds.
Great storage capacity.
I bought 4 of them.

Cons: Unfortunately one of them ran scalding hot, like literally dangerous to the touch. I didn't bother returning since it was months past the purchase date when I actually used it.

Other Thoughts: Great buy, but check each unit immediately after purchase. Let it run for 5 minutes then test the temperature carefully. Handle with a paper towel or oven mitt. If it's broken the same way one of mine was, it will burn your skin. It tested it in several USB ports, and two computers from two different manufacturers (Dell and ASUS). Same result.

Mushkin, if you read this, I'll write a 5 star review if you contact me and accept a late return.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Drive

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: Fast, sturdy construction, Fair price for the speed and capacity.

Cons: Caps is going to get lost, it should be tighter or better, have a strap.

Other Thoughts: It took a driver update on my laptop to get the speed up to an acceptable level but with the update the speed droop mentioned by others was much better. Before update the speed fell down quickly to around 25MBs, After update it starts transfers at about 400MBs and droops to about 300 MBs with large files. (I think that was with a 7GB file.)

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Mushkin.
We appreciate your feedback and support.

3 out of 5 eggsUneasy temperature and slower speeds

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: I got the Flash drive fairly quick and it came set up as a NTFS format with 111.8GB storage and the remaining 8.2GB used for hidden recycle bin/volume information. The storage is very nice and speed is much better then recent Flash drives so the SSD capabilities are nice. I will add the speed tests I ran in Other thoughts for others to see.

Cons: The entire Flash drive heated up to an extreme temperature in my opinion and even though my first usage gave me up to 437MB/s copying to the Flash drive it began to drop so I decided to run two speed tests to get an idea how it was performing. I guess I can deal with the heating up but it worries me for the life of the drive.

Other Thoughts: I listed the tests I ran below for others to see. I plan to contact Newegg and/or Mushkin to ensure the life of the Flash drive with the uneasy temperatures coming off the Flash drive or if it needs to be replaced. I'm sure the response will be quick since I haven't had any trouble before with responses.

4 out of 5 eggs3rd followup - things get better

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: Fast, relatively inexpensive, appears to system like an SSD drive, not a thumb drive.

Removed one egg because it took Mushkin 90 days after I filed a complaint to replace it. A quarter of a year is excessive.

Cons: Big and heavy.

Other Thoughts: So it took 90 days (90 DAYS!) from the time I filed a trouble ticket for Mushkin to finally send a replacement, and that one works MUCH better than the original.

Was able to sustain about 130 MB/s all the way through on a 20 GB file transfer, unlike before, where it would heat up and drop to 20 MB/s after about 5 GB and stay there until it cooled off.

Runs significantly cooler than the one it replaced, which became too hot to touch after about 10 minutes sustained use.

5 out of 5 eggsKicks major tail feathers

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: Reliability and data transfer speeds via USB 3.0 are fantastic. I did some fair bit of research on this brand and this stick in particular and it's proven to be a good performer so far.

I've got it installed in the case to an available USB 3.0 port on a PCI card. Am using a native SATA II motherboard from 2009.

Cons: I paid $75 for it. It holds over software valued nearly 100 times it's original purchase price.. I'd be up the creek if it failed on me. It's Mushkin (so I trust it!)

It gets a little hot when moving large amounts of data across the USB 3.0 port. You could almost warm your fingers with it on a chilly morning.

Other Thoughts: I have used the heck out of this stick since I received it on June 27th, 2014.

Moved close to a terabyte of data across it in that time frame and now it holds all the computer software I highly value as backup & instantly accessible.

5 out of 5 eggsSSD Flashdrive

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: Decently fast for a SSD shoved into a Flashdrive chassis.

Cons: Didn't reach product spec speeds of 400MB/s which is totally fine since I suspected this as an issue with the chipset. Intel Z77 with UASP activated for USB 3.0 the drive was hitting 350MB/s where as with UASP it was reaching only about 240~250MB/s.

I'm sure with a newer Z87 or Z97 chipset the speeds will skyrocket faster as the bandwidth allotment is higher

2 out of 5 eggsNot recommended

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: Fast, USB3

Cons: Too Bulky. Sharp edges. Cap not so tight and can lose

Other Thoughts: As others have stated, this drive gets really hot quickly and that results in write speeds dropping drastically. I have another PNY 128GB usb 3 drive which remains consistent and although even though that does get hot too but not as hot as Mushkin and speeds dont drop so drastically.

An added disadvantage is that this drive is too bulky (almost Double the size of other fast USB 3 drives)

I would NOT recommend this drive and definitely not worth the price and the added bulk

5 out of 5 eggsDebunking False Information

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: This drive is extremely fast. For being in a metal casing, it's actually fairly light. The casing is also quite rugged, as others have mentioned. You can boot and OS off of the drive, and re-partition it, if desired.

Cons: Wish it was bigger. But, you "get what you pay for."

It does run a bit hot. What your hands, if they're sensitive to heat!

Other Thoughts: I'm really here, writing this review to debunk previous reviewers comments about the drive being slow. The drive is just as fast as advertized. Don't let anyone else fool you!

You must keep in mind that the drive can only operate as fast as your motherboard chipset will allow. If you have an older motherboard, with an older chipset, and older drivers, don't expect to write to this drive any faster than 30-70 MB/s and read from it any faster than about 150-170 MB/s. However, if you have the latest and greatest chipset on your motherboard, with the drivers to back it up, then you have every bit of the speed promised by the manufacturer!

So, keep your expectations in check. Don't pan the drive because your machine doesn't support the speed the drive can handle.

4 out of 5 eggsA small external SSD

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Ventura Ultra 120GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDVU120GB

Pros: + tough casing
+ fast performance
+ lightweight

Cons: - large
- exterior looks cheap
- not as fast as advertised

Other Thoughts: I was torn between this and the Sandisk Extreme drive. What won me over was the casing. I was worried that the plastic keychain hole on the Sandisk looked thin and flimsy, and was likely to break. There was an extreme pro model that had a more robust piece of metal there, but it was very pricy.

This flash drive will not get lost. That piece is metal. It will not break. It's also huge, making it even more difficult to lose. This thing is so large, you are basically giving your car keys a handle.

The drive is lighter than I thought. Very tough, but very light. It feels like you are holding a maglite. I could probably kill someone with it if I swung it just right.

The sticker on the side is a bit obnoxious. It is one of those rounded protruding decal stickers, so it looks cheap, and the painted exterior keeps the cheap look going.

The rubber cap is not going to fall off. I came from a Lacie CooKey that had served me well for 4 years. I accepted that I will not get the performance I want in that form factor. I accepted that if I want a flash drive that doesn't short out, I need one with a proper USB connecter. I still hated the idea of a cap. This one is a good quality rubber that fits perfectly. It will not accidentally fall off, but you can still misplace it.

This drive is not as fast as the ad leads you to believe. My mac was only able to able to hit 120 write, 190 read. Windows was a little slower. I believe that comes from buying the 120 gig model rather than the 240. This is big for a flash drive, but it is really a small SSD. Higher capacities will perform better.

This drive wins me over in a few ways. First, it's not going to break free from my keychain like I believe the Sandisk would. Second, even though it is cheaply painted and bedazzled, it is a very sturdy piece of equipment. Third, I get much more capacity per dollar than I would with the Sandisk.

My only worry is the controller. These use the infamous SF-2281 controller. While I never use Sandforce based drives, I was willing to take the risk on an external drive. So far, it runs just fine, and should anything come up, the firmware is upgradable, so it's more about Mushkin backing the product than Sandforce. Time will tell if this becomes an issue.

Finally, these do get warm while in use. They do not get hot. They will not burn you, melt your computer, or burn a hole to the center of the earth.
