5 out of 5 eggsOCZ 60 GB SolidState Drive

Pros: This is one AWESOME drive, but !!! WARNING !!! you must go to OCZ support forums and search out Reg Fixes to do before you install this drive, or any other SSD for that matter. If you do not do the fixes OCZ says you will permanently damage the drive, the basic fixes consist of memory management ie: disable de frag, write behind cache, delete buffer on shutdown and stuff like that. It is a really easy reghack to do, but you must do it. and this drive screams. I installed it as a system drive on my Dell PowerEdge 1900 Server, boot time was cut in half, drive access was cut in half, USB printer access was 'Right Now' like now no waiting where it used to lag 5 or 6 seconds before.

Cons: Price, but willing to pay to get the performance improvements

beware of these drives however, their are lots of mfg's and models, i found 80% to be the less expensive and very low performance.

Other Thoughts: DO YOUR HOMEWORK EXTENSIVELY BEFORE BUYING

5 out of 5 eggsResearch is most important of all

Pros: Speeds kick b*tt, even on stand alone with OS installed. Probably compares to a normal HDD. Cant wait to get another and raid it up for even faster speeds!

Cons: Still new tech and tweaking is required.

Other Thoughts: I paired this up with a Gigabyte EP45T-UD3LR, and 4 gigs of Patriot Cas7 ddr3. Had problems untill I Updated the Bios. Then used the tweak tool listed on OCZ forums and BAMO! the nightmare was over. Also i DL'd the chipset drivers seprately, the user disc has alot of garbage on it you really dont need. And remember always manually adjust your memory voltage approprately, undervoltage = slow ram. Takes longer to POST than it does to load vista. If your thinking of going SSD, its worth it. do a little prep though. 1)Have chipset drivers, raid drivers predownloaded, and the ssd tweak utlility from ocz forums ready before installing OS. 2)Setup voltage and speeds in bios correctly. 3) Install OS and IMMEDIATELY run the tweak utility 4)Install chipset drivers 5) update bios if needed 6) ENJOY!

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Not too bad. First SSD. Quiet, lol. Good drive for the $ compared to other options.
USB and SATA ports are cool.

Cons: XP is running ok for me without the tweaking sometimes needed. I did try steadystate and other mods to the os, but reverted. I really didn't like the steadystate software for my use, but its good stuff for other needs.
VISTA is apparently the OS of choice for SSD.
I might currently like my striped pair of barracudas better tho, unless I picked a faster SSD.

Other Thoughts: It took me a short while to get used to the drive being so quiet. Being as it has no moving parts at all, it makes no noise at all. It was strange not to hear the usual crunching from the actuators seeking. :) at least there is the hdd led.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT SSD

Pros: Very fast read and write speeds. Sisoft physical drive benchmark reported nearly 160MB/s read. very satisfied

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: after some simple tweaks made by following the VERY helpful walkthroughs on the OCZ forum, this hard drive performs flawlessly without ANY stuttering. Without tweaks and steadystate, you may experience some mild stutter from time to time. Tweaking is a small price to pay compared to how many more hundreds of dollars you would have to spend to buy a SSD that doesnt stutter

5 out of 5 eggsCan't wait til 7

Pros: 0 degrees temp, zero noise, faster then 720011. averages 140mb write and 100 mb read in hd tune, seems faster though.

Cons: none so far, after installing vista there was some mouse cursor lags but they are gone.no problems with mobo or drivers

Other Thoughts: starts vista about 30 seconds faster, still has annoying blank screen. xp pro 64 still boots faster this on spindle based hd

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds work to make it work

Pros: Very fast reads, completely silent, SATA connectors fit right in - no adapters needed. When working right, showcases the speed possible in an SSD. Price is good.

Cons: Poor random write performance, causing persistent OS stuttering/pauses. Absolutely needs system tweaks to make this thing work. Mounting bracket needed if you want to secure it neatly in a desktop environment. Not as good as X-25.....

Other Thoughts: XP Pro 32-bit, SP3, abit AN-52, AMD X2 5600+, 6 GB RAM (yes, my OS recognizes less than 4 GB). Upon installation, OS experienced noticeable stuttering/pauses. Installed OCZ-recommended tweaks (disabled prefetch/turned off indexing/disabled NTSF journal update/disabled 8.3 filename). Did not notice overall improvement. Then used Ramdisk Plus to load a 2GB ramdisk, and routed IE7 temp files/cache there. That improved performance measurably (at least while online); browsing was smooth, and the stuttering died down substantially. Another tweak (which I haven't done yet) is to convert the ramdom writes via MS SteadyState to take advantage of the SSD's better sequential write speeds and further control the stuttering. I'm waiting to see if the system is good enough to where I don't need SteadyState (not too hot about the need to reboot to save the writes). Certain tweaks I wouldn't recommend: Disabling system restore, or file datestamp.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are pleased that OS tweak have helped you issues. We highly recommend these optimizations for XP. Vista need less tweaking, as it is newer and geared more toward SSD drives.
Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsNOT WITH XP!!!

Pros: Under the correct circumstances this SSD is extremely fast. OCZ has the best forum community interaction I have ever seen to solve these problems. On a VISTA Business system (Gforce 9400 chipset) this is smokin' fast AFTER modifications listed on OCZ website.

Cons: ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE THIS WITH WINxp AS YOUR BOOT DRIVE! It takes a high level of tech knowledge just to get this to operate at an acceptable level without studdering and freezing up. While the OCZ modifications did help, they did not solve the issue. While using the Microsoft solution of protecting data did improve performance while inside WinXP, boot and shutdown times are reduced to worse than a 4200 rpm drive. It also puts your data at risk of being lost.

Other Thoughts: This is based on the new nVidia 9400 chipset (Gigabyte board) with bios F2. A modification to the SATA controller via bios or drivers may help as I understand other chipsets may be less inclined to studder under WinXP.

Bottom line is use Vista Business with this drive or do not buy it!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problem. The best source of info for these drives and their use is on our support forums at the link below.
Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsFast - just as I imagined

Pros: FAST bootup and file reading, protected from shock and shaking. Improved battery life on laptop by about 15%...

Cons: Have to tweak Vista/XP to play nice with it, which includes disabling features that I do normally use (such as hibernate).

Other Thoughts: All I can say is wow! I installed a fresh copy of XP on this SSD and it now boots and loads IE in less than 12 seconds! No lie. Mind you, this is a 3 year old laptop! (although 3 years ago it was pretty sweet :) )

Specs of Laptop: Core Duo 2.0 2GB RAM

If you want ultimate startup bragging rights, go with this! You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 eggsNice drives

Pros: Fast, fast fast. Good quality drives. Ocz is well known for builing good quality memory so why would'nt they be? (fast)

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these and installed them in a raid 0 on an asus m3a79-t mb. I am running the 64 X2 6000. Wow! Loaded xp pro in 8 minutes! Really made a difference in boot-up and shut down times. Programs snap open and slam shut. I ran several benchmarks on my setup and am getting 214-256MB\sec on reads (64k and up in file size), and 163-178MS\sec write speeds. (used ATTO). And thats using the on-board raid contoller!! I have seen benchmarks of these drives on a hardware raid card that are triple what I'm getting. Buy these drives, you'll wonder how you ever went without them. I used to get up in the morning, turn on computer and go get my coffee started before it was finished loading all my programs. Now it is done booting and loading all programs b4 I leave the room to start the coffee pot! I'll be buying more of these.

4 out of 5 eggsmajor improvement for laptop

Pros: Insanely fast reads -- loads applications virtually instantly. I do a lot of digital photo editing on my laptop, and photoshop CS loads in about 3 seconds (used to take almost 30). MS SteadyState makes the random write problem all but completely disappear which means the system is screaming fast.

Cons: The write performance isn't spectacular, but for what I do the system is 10x faster 95% of the time, and 2x slower 5% of the time. A clear winner for me.

Other Thoughts: I don't think I would put one of these in a desktop system, given the price/performance numbers for high speed 3.5" hard drives. However, since most folks have pretty slow spinning disks in their laptops, you're going to notice more improvement there. (you can't stick a velociraptor in a laptop!)
