4 out of 5 eggsWorking, careful how you clock

Pros: Working at 1064 clock speed. Untried at 1600 rated speed but may work just fine.

Cons: Not verified at full 1600 clock speed but may work just fine there.

Other Thoughts: I gotta tell you, I had trouble with these at 1600 clock speed. I thought it was bad RAM. But it may work per my comments: Motherboard maker supported overclocking to that RAM speed. What was not made clear at that time almost 4 years ago (except for one single online post out of hundreds) is that for an x58 chipset system the overclock works adjusting the core multiplier. If you get the RAM speed by adjusting the uncore speed then some hardware on the motherboard will lock up because that clock controls other functions that can't handle it. Even the motherboard maker did not mention this and just said the ram speed was "supported". Believe me I looked everywhere for documented clues. I had hard freezes at uncores of 2793 and above intermittently for months and tried many fixes. Running now at stock mainboard specifications and it works fine, but ram is lower than rated speed. I don't want to overclock my cpu so I did not try increasing the core multiplier to get the rated RAM speed. Probably works fine. Minus 1 egg because nobody mentioned the little clocking trap (Maker of mainboard or RAM should know this). Personally I put this error on the mainboard maker.

1 out of 5 eggsMemtest failed, no memory exchange even hand-in the memory

Pros: the Spec looks nice, but the memory causes BlueScreen.

Cons: The memory does not work (no overclock at all). The memory get lots of errors with memtest.

Other Thoughts: Got a RMA number. However, I cannot afford any down time on the server. I have asked for hand-in exchange, and here is the replay from their RAM department,
"you can drop off the memory but we would still have to send you the replacement just bring the memory to our location at your convenience between the hours of 8am and 5pm".
If there is no hand-in exchange, don't say it on OCZ web site. I don't mind if there is problem with the product, but their RAM is really bad.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are very sorry for the problem. Shipping of replacement memory is done form another location. Please contact our support manager at (800)459-1816, ext 206. We should be able to work out a soloution to keep you running.
Thank you

3 out of 5 eggsProblematic RAM

Pros: Good speeds, latency, when it works.

Cons: Bad QA on this product. High % of bad sticks sold in these sets. I've purchased two of these triple channel sets in the past year. The first set was returned to Newegg immediately upon receipt because one stick was DOA. I had to RMA the 2nd set recently for the same reason only this time to direct to OCZ.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, OCZ's RMA process is very, very long. Either they have a lot of returns and can't keep up with them, or they are understaffed or both. Or they simply don't care-- I don't know. I am sitting here without the 6GB of RAM I paid $200 for, and this is the 2nd set I've had to patiently spend the time to identify the bad stick out of 6 that is bad. Their RMA site has no method for sending a question, asking about the replacement, nothing. Once they close your trouble ticket and issue the RMA, you are basically incommunicado. So, I wanted to post my experience here some everyone will know how OCZ really deals with "Lifetime Warranties" and RMAs.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problems. Support tickets are closed as matter of system maintenance only. Our customers can always create a new support ticket to inquire about their RMA. Just reference your RMA number, and we will be happy to help.
Thank you

4 out of 5 eggsUsed to be cheap

Pros: Cheep. At least at the time when I bought it in April 2009 it was $100 after a $10 instant discount and free shipping. But now it is over $200 :O That is the story with all ram prices these days.
Overclocks very well and stays cool to the touch and is stable in the Asus P6T6 WS and P6T Deluxe ver.1 boards I used.

Cons: Does not have XMP feature. So I had to manually set timings, frequency and dram voltage in bios to get the correct speed.
Has doubled in price since I bought this kit over one year ago.

Other Thoughts: I have Asus P6T6 WS and P6T Deluxe ver.1. Neither of these boards have the dram voltage setting of 1.65v so I set the voltage dram at 1.66v. At setting of 1.64v was not stable for my overclock.

5 out of 5 eggs6-6-6-18 at 2100

Pros: First time trying OZ in a rig for me. I am pleased with speed and the heat. Ram tends to be a second thought when heat is concerned but these bad lads stay around 50 - 55 C when using Prime95 blend. I have them at 1.56V and they are keeping up with my i7 930 at 3.6GHz.

Cons: Its a catch 22. The heat spreaders work well, but if you want to get crazy with them its hard to get an aftermarket cooler on them.

1 out of 5 eggsFMS10 review

Pros: no pros, if it doesn't work and it didn't work at spec's
then 1 stick died after 2 months

4 out of 5 eggsFirst batch was bad, 2nd works perfect

Pros: Got them running right at spec (1.64V, 7-7-7-24) on my GA-X58A-UD3R w/ an i7-920. Running solid. My board steps by .02V so it is not technically at the 1.65V spec, but it is perfectly stable.

Cons: First batch I got was bunk, but these things happen. And NewEgg replaced them easy.

Other Thoughts: The memory world (and the tech world in general) is and has always been a c**p shoot. Bad sticks happen. I was unsure going for OCZ and not Crucial as I have always done in the past, and you would think I would be scorned. But with how solid my new set is, I wouldn't hesitate to get OCZ to max this board out.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problem. We are happy that your system is now running well for you. If we can be of any help in the future, please visit our support forums at the link below.

5 out of 5 eggs6 is a good number

Pros: I think 6GB of ram is the perfect amount for any high end user. I can have Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 running at max settings at the same time and use about 4.5GB of ram at most with a bunch of stuff running in the background. I see no reason to to increase to 12 anytime soon. On the speed of this ram, it runs perfectly at 1600MHz 7-7-7-24 timings like the specs claim, but there is really very little performance increase over 1333MHz with the same timings. I would recommend this ram to anyone who wants that extra bit of speed or for overclockers, its fantastic. However for most users, 1333MHz would be more than enough.

Cons: none at all

Other Thoughts: My system:

Intel Core i7 920 @2.66GHz
Zalman CNPS9900ALED
6GB DDR1600 OCZ Platinum
ASUS P6T
Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD 5850
2x 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black (Raid 0)
Corsair CMPSU-850TX
LG DVD Burner
Cooler Master RC-690

4 out of 5 eggsNot exactly stable at 7-7-7-24

Pros: Pretty good RAM. Works with specified 1.65V and 7-7-7-24 timings MOST of the time... Low voltage requirements, which is good.

Cons: Occasionally random crashes at 7-7-7-24 1.65V. I just deal with the BSODs once in a while.

Sometimes the BIOS refuses to recognize one of the sticks and my computer boots into Windows with 4GB instead of 6GB.

Other Thoughts: I bought this close to a year ago, and for a while I was running it at 7-7-7-20 before actually noticing that I got the specs wrong. BSODs decreased quite a bit after going to 7-7-7-24, but didn't disappear entirely. Maybe I should exercise the lifetime warranty option and get myself a new set...

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry that you are having difficulties. Please visit our support forums for assistance with troubleshooting and settings. A few setting tweaks just might resolve this. If we can't get you running stable, we will arrange for an RMA.
Thank you
