2 out of 5 eggseh...dunno if im diggin this

Pros: when its working having esata blazing 3x the speed of the usb2 is awesome. bragging rights when your buddies are still yanking their oldnslow usb2 sticks.

Cons: apparently in order to get these esata flash drives to be truly plug & play you're going to have to enable some settings in your OS upon install and in your BIOS at install. if ya ask me thats a bit much to go thru to get a quicker flash drive. do some poking around about ahci...

also w/out said reinstall you're gonna run into problems booting from esata which is a pretty sweet feature for booting from a flash drive...unless ya wanna run slax.

Other Thoughts: you can work around it & still get your esata speeds, but its not plug & play as advertised/desired/expected. in order to use the esata port you've got to go into device manager & scan for hardware changes. it should get it recognized.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, it is common for newer features (such as ESATA) to require some OS configuration to be fully functional. This of course has nothing to do with this product, and is a function of your OS. We would be happy to assist any customer on our support forums at the link below.
Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsUsed this to speed up my latop .

Pros: I did the following to get a decent performance increase on my laptop .

Its a Vista -> XP to downgrade (studio 17 2ghz core2duo with 4 gigs) . I wanted to take advantage of the 4 gigs (32 bit OSs hold a portion back for hardware addressing) so I found a ramdrisk app that allowed me to partition off some of the ram and have the OS memory manager not address it thus allowing me to use all 4gigs . The ramdrive was set to save and load on reboot and this slowed things down . I installed this eSATA drive and partitioned it into 2 drives and one unpartitioned chunk . I moved the ramdisk save to partition 1 , the backup for this on partition 2 and then partition 3 was mounted in the windows directory on the root drive . This allows both prefetch and pagefile.sys to be moved to this mounted folder and thus off of the main drive . With prefetch , pagefile.sys and the ramdisk image offloaded from the boot drive the system is now super quick to boot .

Cons: It has nothing to do with this drive but powered eSATA is super rare so your stuck with using up a USB port as well . My laptop is the only hardware I own with powered eSATA .

Other Thoughts: Great drive to offload things onto to make "pretend" readyboost on XP , way faster than any USB drive .

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little drive

Pros: Used it as boot drive on my Atom 330 mini ITX portable 8-track digital audio recorder. Installed XP Pro no problem. Boots from P.O.S.T. to desktop in 10 seconds. I use a 40Gb notebook drive for the swap file and data writing.

Cons: Had to use internal USB header to power it. No real biggie since had 4 internal USB connections

Other Thoughts: Buying another one

4 out of 5 eggsNot removable media...

Pros: It's super fast and installed fairly easily.

Cons: It is classified as a hard disk drive (even in USB mode) instead of removable media by Windows, so it cannot be used for ReadyBoost. It's wider than most thumb drives, so you'll probably end up blocking whatever port is directly adjacent to the eSATA port, so an eSATA extension cable would have been nice. Also, most motherboards don't have powered eSATA ports, so use of the USB to power it is pretty much unavoidable.

Other Thoughts: I was able to buy an eSATA extension cable separately from kanguru.com. Their handling and shipping fees were ridiculous, though.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid this!!!!

Pros: NONE!!!!!

Cons: This drive didn't make it through a format! DO NOT BUY!

Other Thoughts: New egg would have replaced it for me, however i don't want the product. if the 1st one is that bad, what should a customer expect?

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Works flawlessly

Cons: needs power by simultaneouslly attaching USB cable, but that's not the devices fault, it's just a function of eSATA

Other Thoughts: Great product. I wish all things were eSATA.
