2 out of 5 eggsBunk out of warranty

Pros: Fast at first. Easy installs.

Cons: Died right after 3 year warranty was over. Tech support/customer service was no help because it was a couple months out of warranty. The majority of ssd's that are refurbished are OCZ, not a good sign. After sometime it becomes unstable then it will die.

2 out of 5 eggsCannot Recommend

Pros: The speed of SSD drives are great. I have gone from around a 30-40 seconds boot time with traditional 7200rpm hard drive disks, to less than 10-15 seconds (this time is from pressing the power button to being within Windows with all programs loaded).

Cons: Though they are fast, they are also fairly fast to their grave. I have purchased 4 OCZ 60 GB SSD since Oct 2010 (1 Vertex Series, 1 Vertex Turbo, 1 Agility Series 1, and 1 Agility Series 3). Of those, 1 died within warranty, which I was able to get RMA through OCZ; this process was fairly easy and within 1-2 weeks, I had a replacement. However, this drive later died within the next year. 2 others died just 1-2 months outside of their warranty so I was unable to get those replaced. I still have 1 that I ordered last year (Agility 3) that is still working for the moment. The signs I saw when they started going bad were typically OS crashes, random disconnecting, and eventually no longer recognized by BIOs, which prevented me from attempting to upgrade the firmware.
So on average, I got about 2-3 years from a roughly $1-2/GB investment.

Other Thoughts: I used these drives in different machines and for different uses. Some were solely for OS and programs, while others were used for installing PC games onto. All storage were handled by traditional hard drives.

I suppose their value comes down to each individual. To myself, when I look at traditional hard drives that I have owned since 2005 and still use them today, I would expect at least someone similar results from advanced technology. I understand that in 2010, SSD drives were really starting to take off so purchasing them were a risk. However, when you buy from various batches over the course of 2-3 years and still end up with the same results, it is hard to justify. I have another SSD from another company, which I have had for about 2 years; so far, I haven’t had any bad signs as of yet.
So I can’t say whether OCZ’s manufacturing or if it is still the technology, but at this time, I don’t believe I will order another SSD from OCZ. I have RAM from OCZ, which has been running great for 4-5 years; I feel they are a good company. I feel there is some major issues with their SSD line of products which need addressed, and hopefully, newer models are proving better.

5 out of 5 eggsTerrific Affordable Drive For Intro To SSD

Pros: Drive is very cheap and has twice the storage for what is available at the same price point.
OCZ updates their firmware regularly

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I replaced a 160GB Seagate HDD in my media PC that is used to display video after pulling it over SMB/CIFS from my FreeNAS server. The old drive was loud and slow but had no forseeable failure point.

I waited for an affordable SSD that was a good deal and snagged this unit. Their is built-in TRIM on the drive and the v1.7 firmware makes the drive fast an severely improves reliability (many reports of this being a bad drive are resolved by going to v1.7).

This is an old SSD and OCZ still supports it! That is worth the extra egg in my rating alone.

3 out of 5 eggsHigh Drama

Pros: cheap. Lasted 3 years, approx one in service.

Cons: cheap. Even though it mostly just sat in a cupboard for years, it failed when put into use after only about a year of daily use. I bought this on a Newegg Shell Shocker deal, but I would have done better to just suck it up and pay the extra money to buy a reputable brand.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid little SSD

Pros: stable & reliable

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I've had this for over a year now with zero issues which is about all you can ask for out of a drive - and it's plenty fast although the latest SSDs are, of course, even faster. 60gb is *just* enough for a basic W7 install but would really recommend going with larger when possible.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't Last

Pros: It really is pretty fast compared to a hard drive.

Cons: Had 4 of these over 3 years. First one lasted about 15 months, each one after that lasted no more than 4 months or so. They all died in the same way: just couldn't read sectors anymore. System would gradually lock up more and more as data was lost and then eventually fail to boot. Luckily I consistently made backups, because I didn't trust this thing. Each RMA was also quite slow, total turnaround time from death to new drive was usually about 3 weeks. Email responses were typically 2 to 3 days. After my last RMA (the 4th one) they replaced this with a Vertex 2. Sadly, the vertex 2 is slower if anything (4000 IOPS based on my benchmarks, yet it's rated for 50k) and it holds 5GB less. Of course, after roughly 7 months of ownership, my Vertex 2 is now showing read errors across the board. I don't know how the newer Vertex drives fare, but if you plan on putting any serious use into this thing, don't buy it.

Other Thoughts: Ridiculously expensive when I got it in June 2009: $240 for 60GB?? Even modern SSDs at $100 for 128GB are rarely worth it for the average user. The fact that the $240 could have gotten me about 2TB more storage (in 2009) is simply aggravating. On another topic, the RMAs took so long that I had to boot my computer to a Ubuntu Live CD just so I could continue to run my server VMs.

4 out of 5 eggsOld. But gets the job done.

Pros: It's an SSD. Zero lag.

Cons: Obsolete. Do not buy after 2011 unless it's super cheap.

Other Thoughts: It's like... a first or second generation drive... If you're reading this review in 2012, you may want to reconsider your Tech Knowledge level. This drive was spiffy for its time, but has been superseded by cheaper and faster drives.

4 out of 5 eggsNice workhorse SSD

Pros: Fast
Quiet

Cons: 1.6 Firmware was a little flaky

Other Thoughts: About a year into using this SSD, I started to have some issues with its firmware. Contacted customer service and they helped get me back up and running within a day. While I am still new to SSDs, I have a decent amount of tech knowledge, and the customer service people never talked down to me and really knew their stuff. I was impressed and will buy OCZ again!
