FAST!!

white Reviewed By: Conic on 8/3/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Very fast! Completely compatible replacement for my SATA II drives. Dropped it in, loaded an image (which went very quickly) and that was it. I've never had a problem with any of the 11 I've ordered and installed so far.
Cons: Out of 11 of these units (all in use), I have never been able to successfully upgrade the firmware. The upgrade software just doesn't work. I've tried it on several different computers in every configuration imaginable. I followed the firmware upgrade instructions to the letter. But, all of the drives seem to be running fine without the upgrades though.

Of course I have to list the expense as a con, but that's the price of being an early adopter. (And, the people who paid for the drives aren't fussing about the cost -- so I guess I shouldn't either.)
Other Thoughts: Amazing speed on these things. We're using them on medical computers that load cat scans and such. The doctors are loving them. I love them because an XP computer that used to take 1.5 minutes to boot, now takes about 14 seconds (from power on to logging on and using the system!) These are much faster than my Corsair SSD's that purport to have higher speeds.

My Vista laptop now boots in about a minute as opposed to about 6.5 minutes. SWEET!

Very Frustrating

Pros: When they work, they are as fast as promised.
Cons: I purchased for of these units for a raid 0 array. They configured quickly to my Areca 1231, seed so fast it was hard to believe. After about three days, one failed and killed the arrray. I ordered a replacemnt, it lasted about 4 hours.
Other Thoughts: I am know runnin g the remaing three under raid 5 as I can't stand the thought of putting my computer back together again. The reliability is unacceptable. I would advise all to wait until OCZ reveals the what the problem is and that it has been rectified.

Fast, but died a quick death

white Reviewed By: Fanfoot on 1/18/2010
Rating + 1
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Very fast. Either faster than or competitive with the Intel SSDs depending on which review site you read. And available in larger sizes, such as this 250GB drive (vs. the max 160GB for the Intel X25M-G2s). Firmware can be upgraded. Supports TRIM (for Windows 7 performance over time).
Cons: Not compatible with Thinkpad T61p. Not sure who's fault this is, but both the Intel and the Corsair P256/Samsung drives work just fine without issue while the OCZ Vertex has problems.

Turned into a doorstop after about a week of use. No longer shows up as a drive, can't even be reformatted.
Other Thoughts: I was able to get the firmware updated without issue, so I was running the latest (1.3?) version as of late December 2009.

I had to change the BIOS configuration in the Thinkpad to IDE from AHCI (which should be better performance) to get it to work. Even then I would sometimes get a drive not ready error on boot and have to try again.l

Drive bricked itself about a week after I started using it, which of course means I managed to get all sorts of software installed, investing days of my time into it, before it crashed. No longer shows up as a device in windows so it can't even be reformatted. I'll be looking to return it if I can.

Will be switching to a Corsair P256 in the near future I think to avoid these issues. In theory this drive (Samsung controller based) isn't as fast, but if you need more storage than Intel can provide, I think its a respectable drive and appears not to have the reliability or compatibility problems the OCZ Vertex drives do.

Too bad.
Manufacturer Response:Hello, we are sorry that you have had problems. It sounds as though your compatibility issues were most likely a problem with the drive, as it should have been working fine for you. A replacement unit should work, and we will be glad to assist you on our support forums at the link below.
Thank you

Horrible Experience w/MacBook Pro

white Reviewed By: CAP on 11/26/2009
Rating + 1
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: Fast while it lasts, has nice colors and comes in a nice box? It does show up as a 256GB as opposed to 250GB on a MacBook Pro.
Cons: This SSD, by no means, was ready for release, it needs tons of work and OCZ should be embarrassed for releasing such a product into the market that ruins their good name (or maybe that was history too?). Not only is the product priced higher than others, but support is given through a forum as opposed to 24/7 customer service given when needed, the way firmware is upgraded on the drive is a true pain and done in an ancient fashion - and to top it off, they make flashing the firmware on the BIOS a true pain (mine did come with the latest firmware, but take a look at their forum and see what a pain the process is). Last con for me, is that while it ran (which it did for about a day), the drive was not much faster than a WD Black series HDD.
Other Thoughts: The first thing I did was use Carbon Copy Cloner so I would not loose my data, but the performance was slow and not at all compared to what others had said, so I figured it was the clone, I did a clean install with Time Machine recovery, which on a WD Black had originally taken about 50 minutes for install and about 2 hours for recovery ...but no, it took over an hour just for install on this supposably fast SSD. After doing a clean install, no recovery, just Snow Leopard, no performance improved, still the same cr*ppy performance, but this time with lock-ups. All I can say is that I'm very sorry I purchased this item, and hopefully other Mac owners will avoid the headache as well. When I owned PC's OCZ was my company of choice for whatever parts they make, I'm not sure what to think of them now, but their SSD is pretty much horrible, and their Mac support lacking a lot. Now I'm just debating on which to go with, Intel (which makes nothing bigger than 160GB) or Corsair.
Manufacturer Response:Hello, we are sorry for the problem. It sounds as though your drive was defective, which is quite unusual. A replacement should work out just fine for you. Please RMA with Newegg for fastest service. Posting in our support forums will get you personalized support if required.
Thank you
