5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME!

Pros: Low cost
TRIM and garbage collection support

Cons: Seemed to take forever to get trim/garbage collection support. I knew this going in and bought it anyway as OCZ has always done me right and I knew it would eventually come, so I didn't take off any eggs since they fixed it.

Other Thoughts: When I bought this on a shell shocker deal at half price, read OCZ had figured out TRIM and garbage support and were waiting for final approval to release the firmware for the drive.

It turns out Samsung held it up until they put it through their rigorous tests before releasing and they took their time doing this.

Once released I have had zero issues with this drive and it has performed wonderfully. It was in my dad's machine for a good year and never lost performance. I have had it for at least 4 months and I've installed Win 7, Ubuntu, Pinguy, and last month Mac OS X 10.6.6 on my Hackintosh.

I guess it's true that good things comes to those who wait, at least with OZ support.

I don't think OCZ will be in too big of a hurry to support Samsung for a while after this fiasco. applaud their determination on making things right with thier customers.

2 out of 5 eggsleaves a lot to be desired

Pros: faster than my SCSI and SATA drives, small footprint, quiet

Cons: not a lot faster than a good SATA drive, went belly-up after only 3 months. not worth the money.

Other Thoughts: OCZ tech support needs improvement

5 out of 5 eggsRebate is Legit

Pros: OCZ's mail in rebates are actually very good, they just take a long time to get to you. I ordered this drive in August 24th, today is December 13th and I just received my $30 MIR.

Cons: The rebate takes a long time, but that's the point, think of it as a delayed gratification type thing.

Other Thoughts: In addition to a good rebate, the drive also works great with XP on my EEEPC 1000. Highly recommend.

1 out of 5 eggsStay as far away as possible

Pros: Very fast drive at first use...

Cons: Not as fast as other drives using SSD controllers from other manufacturers, including other SSDs produced by OCZ.

Like all SSDs it slows down over time until it is practically unusable. Unlike most other SSDs there are no firmware updates available to remedy the performance issues with the OCZ Summit drive.

Draconian practices on the part of support staff in their support forums.

Other Thoughts: Samsung and OCZ have reportedly been cooking up new firmware to address the performance issues of these drives. Unfortunately, they've given several release dates which have come and gone with no word on when the firmware updates will be ready. The chorus of complaints on OCZ's support forums has gotten so bad that they have officially banned any discussion of firmware updates for the Summit drive (their own product!). This drive has a lot of potential, but falls far short because of the incredibly poor support offered by OCZ and Samsung. OCZ appears to be bent on soiling their otherwise positive reputation among enthusiasts with this lemon.

Do not buy an OCZ Summit SSD unless you are a masochist. Based on my experience with this product I would never buy another Summit, and based on my support experience I would never buy another OCZ product either.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of 3rd party controllers

Pros: Ordered 2 of them for Raid 0, very fast, even 780i board couldn't keep up with both of them raided together!

Cons: 1 of 2 died about a week after having it. Kept losing volume information, had to do an RMA, spent 50 bucks sending it to OCZ to get a replacement, then had to wait over a month to get a replacement. And when the replacement was the wrong one! They sent me a Vertex as a replacement which isn't bad, but still half the cache!

Other Thoughts: OCZ makes great memory products, but avoid the SSDs they use with 3rd party controllers (Summit series uses $amsung). Samsung has been sitting on their butts since summit was released and still theres no firmware or garbage collection updates! Avoid the summit series at all costs if you can!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are very sorry for the problems. As far as the "garbage collection" firmware, this has been promised soon (they were waiting on WIN 7 final), and will be available in the very near future. The final version of the flash tool is what we have been waiting for.
Thank you

2 out of 5 eggswas GREAT, now MEDIOCRE and getting worse

Pros: As expected, the drive performed beautifully for the first few weeks of its install.

Cons: 2 Months later, and the performance has degraded considerably. In fact, the 10k Raptor I replaced it with is now not far behind. Windows bootup has almost doubled in time since the installation. I cannot believe that it has been this long for a "fix" especially with a cheaper drive, the Agility, which was avalable at the same time. I opted for the more expensive Summit for higher write speeds.

Other Thoughts: I have done all the specified Windows 7 specific SSD tweaks suggested by OCZ. This must be a marketing nightmare.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we want to assure you that a firmware solution is on the way. We are waiting for the OEM to officially release the flash utility. OCZ has tested beta versions of the flash utility and the firmware, and as soon as the final versions are released, we will make them available on our support forums at the link below. This will solve any slowdowns you have been experiencing.
Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer beware

Pros: Was fast...for about 3 weeks Then slowed significantly.

Cons: OCZ says no fix available and none anticipated. No TRIM support for Win7. They seem to care less that they sold a lousy product. No offer to trade up.

Other Thoughts: I will NEVER buy anything OCZ again

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are not sure where your information came from, but TRIM support is definitely on it's way. Please visit the link to our forums below to read about this. We are waiting on the OEM for a final release of the firmware updater. Beta versions of the updater and the update itself have been tested by OCZ, and we are just waiting for the final release. The update will be available on our forums as soon as possible. We are sorry for the delays.
Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsfaaaaast!

Pros: It is very fast, takes 8 minutes to install Windows 7 Ultimate on this thing. Getting 23,000 HDD suite PCMark Vantage on a laptop.

Cons: None--mine has VBM18C1Q firmware and putting the computer in sleep mode for a few hours restores performance degradation.

Other Thoughts: There is a new firmware to be released end of Nov. with TRIM support but this drive does not need it.

Oh yeah...Newegg rocks!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat in a DV2

Pros: This was the perfect SSD for my brand new HP DV2. It installs quick (cloning took only 10 mins from the old drive) and can open a large file quickly. It fully boots my system with most of the crapware still on it in about 20 seconds. I use it for school and with typing essays, I get about 4 1/2 hours off a full charge. The only thing I would trade it for is the larger drive.

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: Bought from newegg on a shell shocker deal, was here in two days, cloned and installed all my programs within 30 minutes. My specs: HP DV2 AMD Turion X2 Neo 4GB RAM 60GB Summit SSD Windows Vista Premium 64-bit (installing Windows 7 today)
