OCZ Vertex Turbo Series provides a cutting-edge design for enthusiasts looking to transform their desktops or laptops. Enabled by proprietary firmware and 64MB of 180MHz DRAM cache, the Vertex Turbo Edition ramps up performance levels to new heights, while providing the snappier computing, longer battery life, and shorter boot-ups users have enjoyed from the original. The Vertex Turbo delivers best-in-class read and write speeds clocking in at up to 270MB/s read and 210MB/s write along with the lower power consumption and superior durability compared to conventional hard drives.

Perfect for notebooks and desktops alike, the Vertex Turbo Series is ideal for energy-efficient mobile computing to extend battery life, increase the speed of access time, and provide a durable alternative to conventional hard disc drives with superior shock resistance. High capacities and low power consuming NAND flash technology provide the necessary performance and battery life boosts generated by the proliferation of mobile gaming and new ultra-thin laptops.

The OCZ Vertex Turbo drives feature a durable yet lightweight alloy housing, and because OCZ SSDs have no moving parts, the drives are more rugged than traditional hard drives. Designed for ultimate reliability, Vertex Turbo Series SSDs have an excellent 1.5 million hour mean time before failure (MTBF) ensuring reliability over the long term.

  • newegg Optimal performance The tried-and-true architecture and performance of the original Vertex has been upgraded to meet the demands of enthusiasts and other performance-seeking users who benefit from SSD technology. The Vertex Turbo Series maximizes the potential for ultimate productivity and state-of-the-art computing experience, by increasing both the host clock-speed and the SDR DRAM Cache to 180MHz versus 166MHz on the original series.
  • newegg Cool, quiet and durable operation Because OCZ SSDs have no moving parts, they run faster, cooler and quieter than traditional hard drives. Available in capacities of 30GB (32), 60GB (64), and 120GB (128), Vertex Turbo SSDs meets the needs of users looking for a quality boot drive replacement.
  • newegg Ultimate reliability Designed for ultimate reliability, Vertex Turbo SSDs have an excellent 1.5 million hour mean time between failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. Vertex Turbo SSDs come backed by a 3-year warranty and OCZ’s exemplary service and support.

Pros: The speed of SSD drives are great. I have gone from around a 30-40 seconds boot time with traditional 7200rpm hard drive disks, to less than 10-15 seconds (this time is from pressing the power button to being within Windows with all programs loaded).

Cons: Though they are fast, they are also fairly fast to their grave. I have purchased 4 OCZ 60 GB SSD since Oct 2010 (1 Vertex Series, 1 Vertex Turbo, 1 Agility Series 1, and 1 Agility Series 3). Of those, 1 died within warranty, which I was able to get RMA through OCZ; this process was fairly easy and within 1-2 weeks, I had a replacement. However, this drive later died within the next year. 2 others died just 1-2 months outside of their warranty so I was unable to get those replaced. I still have 1 that I ordered last year (Agility 3) that is still working for the moment. The signs I saw when they started going bad were typically OS crashes, random disconnecting, and eventually no longer recognized by BIOs, which prevented me from attempting to upgrade the firmware.
So on average, I got about 2-3 years from a roughly $1-2/GB investment.

Other Thoughts: I used these drives in different machines and for different uses. Some were solely for OS and programs, while others were used for installing PC games onto. All storage were handled by traditional hard drives.
I suppose their value comes down to each individual. To myself, when I look at traditional hard drives that I have owned since 2005 and still use them today, I would expect at least someone similar results from advanced technology. I understand that in 2010, SSD drives were really starting to take off so purchasing them were a risk. However, when you buy from various batches over the course of 2-3 years and still end up with the same results, it is hard to justify. I have another SSD from another company, which I have had for about 2 years; so far, I haven’t had any bad signs as of yet.
So I can’t say whether OCZ’s manufacturing or if it is still the technology, but at this time, I don’t believe I will order another SSD from OCZ. I have RAM from OCZ, which has been running great for 4-5 years; I feel they are a good company. I feel there is some major issues with their SSD line of products which need addressed, and hopefully, newer models are proving better.

2 out of 5 eggsOCZ SSD Vertex Series - turbo

5 out of 5 eggsGreat after almost 2 years

Pros: Fast and reliable. I don't usually write reviews because I feel that people give their feedback too soon and don't get a chance to experience all the pros and cons before they share their thoughts. However, I bought this drive in December of 2009 and it's been working GREAT since day one.

Cons: Can't think of one.

Other Thoughts: After my experience with this drive, I bought a 50 GB Vertex LE (OCZSSD2-1VTXLE50G 2.5" 50GB) in May of 2010 and have not been as happy with it. The second drive appears to be resonsible for my OS "pausing" (all apps become non-responsive for about 30 seconds) frequently. I tried to update the frimware and the update utility would not recognize the drive. Very frustrating.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 19 months

Pros: Fast
Died within warranty

Cons: Died
Expensive

Other Thoughts: This drive cost me $239 on 2/10/2010. Now Aug '11, its dead. Same reports as others. Windows crashing, drive no longer detected in bios. I was under the impression that ssd drives once past their write cycle limit were no longer usable. I had no idea one day it would just flat stop working all together. Had i known that i wouldn't have wasted the money on it. I guess thats what we get being the adopters of a new technology. Rma process has been fairly smooth. Minus the fact it cost ME to ship the drive back to OCZ. Thats ridiculous imo. This is day 2 after the drive being delivered to ocz and still no status change. Why is cross-ship not an option? Somehow, in the back of my mind, i knew this drive wasn't going to last. But the real question is; How long will the replacement last?

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, crazy fast. 2 eggs for that.

Cons: It died after 1 year and 1 month of service, like others have reported. Windows 7 started having explorer crashing, then the machine froze and nothing could be done to unfreeze it. Now the drive doesn't show up in the BIOS at all. I like the opportunity to go out and buy the latest and greatest toys, but I'd have preferred this to have lasted a bit longer.

2 out of 5 eggsGood While it Lasted

Pros: Great fast drive, so it gets two eggs. What more is there?

Cons: It died after 1 year and 1 month of service, like others have reported. Being new technology and such, I don't expect them to last forever as standard hard drives sometimes seem to, but just over a year is a little short. Windows 7 Pro x64 started having explorer crashing, then the machine BSOD'd. Now the drive doesn't show up in the BIOS of two machines or via a SATA to USB converter. It's just flat dead. While I'm a little upset that I have to reinstall all of my stuff, being a computer repair guy, it's nice to know how an SSD fails. It's just like what I expected.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect OS Drive

Pros: Quick Quick Quick
Has Firmware Update
Now a bit Quicker
I Installed Windows 7 64bit on it and use my other WD Drive as storage. I've managed to load Windows in 15 secs from Startup screen to Desktop. Have noticed a big difference in all programs and games.

Cons: Its only 60 GB

Other Thoughts: Once Vertex 3 arrives (in a month) price should drop some more.

1 out of 5 eggsFast... when it was working

Pros: Plenty fast. Makes spinning drives feel like youre moving at a snails pace.

Cons: Worked great for 13 months then failed completely. No chance of data recovery as compared to a spinning disk. Now that reliability data is available, OCZ seems to have some of the highest drive failure rates.

Other Thoughts: Waiting to hear back from OCZ's rma department before I sell the replacement OCZ drive for an Intel SSD.

Manufacturer Response:
