1 out of 5 eggsHorrible reliability

Pros: Fast and large when it works...

Cons: Terrible reliability. This is the 3rd Colossus that I own. Before this drive I had 2 500GB drives in RAID config. Very often one of the drives would fail (no detection by BIOS) or stutter. Back then I blamed it on RAID and sold these drives to get 1TB disk for RAIDless config.

Guess what - SSDD - the drive would still periodically fail or cause bluescreens. I've finally had it and I'm moving my OS to a mechanical drive as I'm typing this review.

OCZ Colossus is a horrible lineup of drives all along. DO NOT BUY.

Other Thoughts: The only non-1-star review here is probably from a person who didn't have this drive fail yet....

1 out of 5 eggsVery Bad Product

Pros: I cannot say anything good about this product. I bought 2 of them from NEWEGG in May or June 2010 each for about $800 + tax. At the beginning they worked fine (Fast without any problems). After about 5 months everything changed. Garbage collection does not work well on these drives. When I copy files to these drives it takes more than 10 times longer than to copy it to my USB 2.0 flash drive. It is the worst performing drive I have ever owned. However read is as fast as at the beginning. Aside from problems with copying I have also experienced other issues. My windows 7 would suddenly try to restart (it usually happens when I copy files). However, my drive would not be recognized. I would get a message – to select a proper boot device. After I have physically disconnected the drive and reconnected it would work again. However, one day (about 8 months from the purchase) I could not get one of my drives to work again. Yes, it was completely dead.

Cons: I am experiencing the same problems with my other drive on the other computer, but that one did not die yet. On the positive side I have very good experience with OCZ customer service. When my drive died, they promptly replaced it with a new one. That one is still OK for now. I did not contact OCZ about my second drive (that still works, but is horribly slow and my computer would not recognize it sometimes), because I was too busy and I do not want to keep reinstalling my computers every 6 months. I am pretty sure that even if OCZ would send me a new drive, I would have the same problems after 6 months or so. That is why I did not even bother. This product is definitely expensive garbage that can only make your life miserable. I regret my decision to buy these drives. I am giving it 1 star only because I cannot give it less.

Other Thoughts: My advice to you is do not buy any SSD with internal RAID. Windows TRIM will not work on SSD with internal RAID. You cannot even ”flash” these drives in order to get them to the original condition.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Performance.

Cons: This drive is absolutley the WORST performing drive I have ever owned after a little over 6 months of use. Even with letting it idle every once in a while for the GC to take over, the performance of this drive is so bad I can't even install anything big with my computer crawling so slow it's not even funny. I put another drive in my system and installed a fresh OS and did not have a SINGLE ISSUE. This drive is an expensive, worthless, piece of junk.

Other Thoughts: Consider yourself warned. Do yourself a favor and buy an SSD that does not have internal RAID-0 from another manufacturer so that you can get TRIM working from within Windows 7.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, please call our support manager at (408) 733-8400, ext 206. We want you to be staisfied with your purchase, and we will be happy to assist you. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Reliability

Pros: Fast drive, good speeds. No issues in the performance category, when it works...

Cons: Had 2 of these so far - first one I bought for $859 on Newegg (ouch)! Both of them have failed... :( Own a Vertex 2 as well (not sure why I bought OCZ again after the Colossus debacle!) which works great. These are bunk drives - would definitely NOT recommend... the newer OCZ SSD's are far better.

Other Thoughts: Support was ok first time around... waiting for a response from them on my 2nd dead drive now, and hoping they will replace it with something OTHER than a Colossus, although not holding my breath... very frustrating, having 2 OS drives go on you... means basically a rebuild of the entire system. :(

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we aplogize for the issues, and we will be happy to assist you. Our staff will be in touch with you shortly.
Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Speed and Warranty!!!

Pros: I'm going to have to disagree with the previous review. There is a small booklet which explains everything.

This drive is AMAZING. It's got the space I need at the price point that I have been waiting for. This is the future of hard drives but like any new tech, requires some tweaking. Having said that, this tech is not extremely new and I think, after having waited for many years, that SSD is now ready for prime time.

Cons: NONE. I'm confident it will last me 3 years and if not, hey, I'll get replacement one for free! You should always backup your critical data anyway. I use SecureBackup for that.

Other Thoughts: There are some tweaks that you can do to prolong the life of this drive. If you want to install Windows 7, here's all that you need to do:

1. If your BIOS supports AHCI, then enable it. Otherwise, don't worry about. Also set S1 instead of S3 if you can. Otherwise, don't worry about.

2. Install Windows 7.

3. In Windows Explorer, right click on the C: drive, uncheck "Allows files on this drive to contents indexed..." Click Apply, and then Ignore All...

4. In the same C: drive properties box, select TOOLS -> Defragment now... -> Uncheck to disallow defrag scheduling.

5. Device Manager -> Disk drives -> OCZ COLUSSUS -> Properties -> Policies -> [X] Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing...

6. In Services, "Stop" and then "Disable" Disk Defragmenter, SuperFetch, and Windows Search.

7. Disable hybernation. cmd as admin: powercfg.exe /hibernate off

Now to maintain the drive, let it idle for 1-3 hours every week at the BIOS screen.

1 out of 5 eggsColossus LT 250

Pros: fast 260 read and write, built in GC

Cons: no information or support if any from OCZ They treat this drive like a stepchild. no support tools or much help from tech support to help maintain drive performance, as we all know speed will drop off sharply and a total erase and reinstall will be required The built in raid Zero prevents the use of know tools available on OCZ forum.

Other Thoughts: will never buy an OZC product ever again

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry that you are having difficulties. The SSD experts are on our forums of course. Windows Garbage Collection will work on your drive. Please visit our forums again, and post for assistance. The staff should be able to clarify this for you.
Thank you
