Based on a cutting-edge new architecture, Vertex 2 Solid State Drives raise the bar once again and deliver unprecedented performance for the complete gamut of gaming and professional multimedia applications. OCZ designed the Vertex 2 to surpass the competition where it counts most, pushing the limits in both sequential and random read/write rates. With spectacular performance in 4k file writes up to 50,000 IOPS, these latest drives take productivity to the next level with over ten times the performance of the previous generation. Using the latest controller technology, Vertex 2 not only provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, but promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives.

With sheer performance that outpaces the competition, the Vertex 2 doesn’t lose sight of what makes an SSD the ideal storage alternative to hard drives and delivers the quality, reliability, and durability demanded by consumers that will not settle for anything but the best. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, the Vertex 2 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows 7 notebook or desktop upgrade.

  • newegg Cool, quiet and durable operation OCZ Vertex 2 SSDs feature a durable yet lightweight housing, and because they have no moving parts, they are more rugged than conventional hard discs. Available in ample 40GB to 480GB capacities, the Vertex 2 is an ideal hard drive replacement for first-time SSD upgraders in need of primary laptop storage or a spacious application and OS boot drive.
  • newegg Ultimate reliability Designed for ultimate reliability, Vertex 2 Series SSDs have an excellent 2 million hour mean time between failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. Vertex 2 Series comes backed by a 3-year warranty and award-winning technical support for the ultimate peace of mind.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSDs offer native TRIM support that can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.
  • newegg 2.5" to 3.5" Adapter Included The OCZ Vertex 2 Series is specifically designed for notebook computers coming in a 2.5-inch hard drive form factor. In addition, the installation kit includes a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket for matching with 3.5” drive bay to extend the storage of your desktop computer.

1 out of 5 eggsFrustration

Pros: Runs somewhat faster. Shaves off about a minute to boot Windows 8, 30 seconds for Ubuntu.

Cons: Frustration. Although the support staff is prompt with the RMA once you send it, there is no reason that these drives should continue to fail so much. Mine failed, I got an RMA, then when I opened the brand new one I got in the mail, my BIOS failed to recognize it. Unacceptable.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear generalspades,

I am sorry to read of your first failure and DOA replacement. It is possible the replacement was damaged in shipping, but unlikely considering your history of problems with the first drive. Please contact our Support as soon as possible and note your previous RMA and DOA replacement. We will either get the drive working or make alternate arrangements with you.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience!

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support

2 out of 5 eggsSSD simply died

Pros: The drive was extremely faster than the mechanical hard drive that it replaced. When the drive was aligned for use on Windows XP I was able to see benchmark tests using ATTO that matched the published specs.

I loved the drive while it worked. It's speed was certainly addictive.

Cons: The drive failed without any symptoms or warnings. One minute the machine was working and the next it wasn't. I purchased this drive from NewEgg on March 14, 2011 so it lasted approximately 15 months. That is not acceptable for a drive with no moving parts.

Other Thoughts: I have already created a ticket with OCZ requesting an RMA so that I can return the drive for replacement under warranty from them. I am hopeful that the process won't take a long time since I feel like my machine is crawling with a mechanical drive running again.

Fortunately, I had a full system backup that was only a week old so I was able to recover my system rather quickly once I replaced the drive. I would strongly suggest that you create frequent system backups if you are using a OCZ SSD drive.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother One Bites the Dust:(

Pros: Price at the time and review on speed rating.

Cons: That it only lasted 15 months.

Other Thoughts: Wish I had read more reviews but saw Maximum PC give the "Kick-A**" award. The problem is the long term they just run great and without any warning...Dead, so be warned move all your important files off the drive just use it for OS ONLY!!! Well now I get to see how good OCZ's RMA warranty is....

Manufacturer Response:

We aplogize for the problem. Please visit the link below and create a support ticket to contact our staff. We will be happy to assist you with an RMA. We care about our customer and are here to help. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsMy experience with my first SSD

Pros: Fast as advertised

Cons: Died after almost a month. I shut my computer off in anticipation of a thunder/lightning storm moving into the area. When I turned the compter back on, the system would not boot up. Checked in BIOS - it was not recognized. RMA process went as expected and I got a brand new replacement within about 2 weeks.

Other Thoughts: I have yet to install the replacement drive into my computer - gunshy I guess, even after 1 year. Seems that 1% of OCZ SSD owners are quite a few.

1 out of 5 eggs2 drives failed

Pros: High Speed. Low cost.

Cons: The first drive began to fail after the first couple months of ownership and finally died altogether after around 6 months. I called OCZ and went through a somewhat lengthy and rediculous RMA process. Shipping the drive back was at my own expense. OCZ refused to allow me to pay extra to upgrade to a more reliable drive. The replacement did eventually arrive. It died four days later.

Bottom Line: Do not buy unless you enjoy replacing drives and enjoy the RMA process.

Other Thoughts: I have given up on OCZ and have put in an order for the Crucial M4. From the looks of the reviews, my luck with this drive should be much better.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive died at 1 year old, too young to die!

Pros: When it was alive, it served it's purpose well, fast drive, extended notebook battery life.

Cons: This evening, woke up the notebook, BSOD, drive is visible in BIOS, but get "No OS" at boot. Removed from notebook, put into a different system, same thing. Purchased at over $200 a year ago, definitely expected more than a year out of it, silly me. So now back to the drawing board in researching a reliable SSD, OCZ apparently doesn't make them.

3 out of 5 eggsDrive failed, but OCZ RMA was pretty smooth

Pros: Drive worked fine for a year. RMA took over a week, then I called RMA asking for a refund to buy other drives like Crucial. The rep offered upgrade to the Vertex 3 90GB SSD. I took the offer and waiting for the better reviewed drive now.

Cons: Suddenly just couldn't post like many others. Even with the upgrade I still need to re-install everything which may take 2 hours. Luckily I don't have anything super sensitive to loose.

Other Thoughts: I'm unsure about OCZ SSDs in the future. I probably would go with Crucial.

Manufacturer Response:

We aplogize for the problem. We are confident that your new drive will work out well for you. If we can be of assistance with setup and settings suggestions please visit our support forums at the link below. We are here to help. Thank you

3 out of 5 eggsGood until failure in 13 months

Pros: This Drive is fast, single best upgrade to a computer for a noticeable difference.

Cons: 13 months of useage, woke my windows 7 computer from sleep and it locked up, rebooted and the bios did not see the ssd anymore.

Other Thoughts: Is the failure somehow induced by windows 7 sleep?

1 out of 5 eggsSame Bug as the Rest

Pros: Fast drive, easy to work with.

Cons: Not reliable. Drive died in the same way everyone else on here has reported. Not sure if it's a firmware issue or what, but something is clearly wrong. Drive no longer shows up in BIOS, so of course Win7 does not see it, either. You can't update the firmware if your system can't see the drive

Other Thoughts: RMA request in to OCZ. They have a good rep for customer service, but I fear they are going to just send me another buggy Vertex 2. I really hope they will bite the bullet and just send me a more reliable drive. I need something that's not going to crash and take all of my data with it. I know they have to understand.

Manufacturer Response:

We aplogize for the difficulties. Our support staff will be happy to assist you with an RMA and setup tips to insure long term reliability. We care about our customers and are here to help. As a side note, less than 1% of our SSD customers ever report issues. Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT SSD but Small

Pros: I LOVE IT. After 11 months absolutely NO PROBLEMS, its fast and reliable.

Cons: Had to buy a small drive because of the prices being so HIGH. I paid $170 when I bought mine 11 months ago. I am reviewing the PRODUCT not the price, so I would not take off and egg for price.
NewEgg get 10 EGGS

Other Thoughts: Would like to upgrade but prices still to high. You can buy a 60GB for about $1.00 per GB but the bigger ones are running almost double, over $200 for 120 GB. Would like to put one in my laptop but I need a 240+ GB. That would require that I re-mortgage my house. LOL
