4 out of 5 eggsFast drive, not supported by every operating system

Pros: This drive is very fast and it's just a card (it doesn't take up an HDD bay)

Cons: It doesn't appear as a standard SATA drive or SATA controller (it appears as two SATA controllers that use a non-standard driver). Not supported by every operating system. It works fine under Linux (no driver needed) and Windows (with the included driver), but other operating systems usually see only the two halves of the drive (not as a RAID device, which prevents booting, although it will work as a non-boot drive if you configure the RAID manually), or nothing at all.

Other Thoughts: If all you are using is Linux and/or Windows, this drive will work fine. If you use any other operating systems, you're pretty much out of luck. Maybe I'm being picky, but I strongly believe that hardware should be standard and not designed with only Windows / Linux in mind. I'm not sure if any data recovery companies could handle this drive, so back up any important files.

1 out of 5 eggsDont Buy This.

Pros: Its fast when you finally are able to get into the system.

Cons: On boot BEFORE you ever see Windows, AFTER the Mobo boot screen image you get a Pres F4 or Shift +S Screen for Raid configuration (This is AFTER I reformatted the drive in windows as a windows only storage drive) AFTER This you get a flashing underscore with a black screen that sticks for over a minute and finally gives you a Windows logo and starts the boot SOMETIMES. sometimes you have to reboot and do it ALL over again...ugh

As reference I'm running for the motherboard and I Havent found a way to get it to boot after countless hours trying. Again PCI-Express is more trouble than it is worth.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy, it's total garbage

Pros: It's fast with reads and writes.
It doesn't take any HDD bays or SATA ports
Easier to install than a HDD (typically)
Decent size for it's current price, works with Windows 8 just fine
Great while it works

Cons: It fails after weeks of use (I RMA'd the first after 3 weeks and the second failed after just 2-3 also.)
It randomly causes blue screens and then stops working all together

Other Thoughts: I own a few SSD drives and I haven't had this sort of issue with any of them. If you are going to use this one, you better have it cloned frequently so you have a backup when it fails. There is absolutely no excuse for OCZ to still be selling this drive, a LOT of people are seeing this same issue. A quick search brings up pages and pages of complaints and issues. I am pretty displeased. I don't understand how 2 other OCZ SSD's work pretty much flawlessly (so far) and this one has to fail.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Eric E.,

We are sorry to read about your experience with the RevoDrive PCIe SSD. The problem here may be usage of Windows 8 together your system and the RevoDrive. The RevoDrive driver officially supports Windows XP, Vista, and 7. While in many cases the drive will work fine with Windows 8, many systems themselves require BIOS updates and specific driver support for proper long-term reliability with Windows 8. If you experienced multiple failures while using Windows 8 it is likely your system needs updates or adjustments in configuration to use the RevoDrive in an unsupported environment.

If you are still experiencing any issue with your drive please contact our Support using the link below and we will gladly assist you.

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the try even at current price

Pros: None. I was never able to get it to work anyway.

Cons: The Sil3124 chip on this card is ancient and will not work in Windows 8 (at least mine couldn't). Mine doesn't work on even Windows 7 after loading the driver properly. I actually setup windows on my hard drive and installed driver there - Windows couldn't even see the drive available in diskmgmt.msc. Firmware update boot disk does not even boot on newer motherboard. Plugged into a same-era-as-the-card P55 board and still not working anyway. I can see the RAID BIOS at boot up so the card should be good. Anyway, I tried everything I could think of and now in the process of RMA with OCZ.

Other Thoughts: If they used one of those Marvell chip (or better LSI/3Ware chips) it would have lasted years more - driver support wise. In this date 2013, the card design is outdated - you can get SATAIII drives with comparable speed at comparable price. I am a very experienced builder (since 1993) and this one card is the most frustrating piece of hardware I've ever had - even more fustrating than setting up MPEG card back in the 1990s which uses custom DMA channel and IRQs.

Do not get this, even if the price is less than a Benjaman. Doesn't worth a dime in this age. The issue can't be fixed because OCZ does not manufacture and cannot support the RAID chip - which is what giving us all the trouble. Silicon Image discontinued the chip a long time ago (It's targetted for PCI-X to SATA, if you know what PCI-eXtended is. Not PCI-E), so no luck here. I hope OCZ will either refund me or give me a SATAIII drive. If not, I will put some hot lead through the board.

1 out of 5 eggsCrapped out after 20 days

Pros: Fast, relatively inexpensive.

Cons: Died after only 20 days of use.

Other Thoughts: I am in the process of RMA right now, I will update feedback depending on OCZ's response time and ease of replacement.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Good Kit

Pros: speed -- fastest drive ever at the time of install. I use this for rendering live HD video down to 5 broadcast streams for Flash and windows media broadcast. Extremely fast drive makes for smooth streaming. . .

Cons: occasional CHKDSK. about every 10 - 15 boot cycles, windows 7 will decide the disk is "dirty" and needs to be scanned for errors.

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit when it was MUCH more expensive and paid for the speed. for this price it is a decent deal, but is not as speedy as some of the current SATA III drives.

5 out of 5 eggsmy fastest drive yet

Pros: 7.6 score in windows 7
super fast drive
easy install after learning correct install procedure
Trouble free for over a year now

Cons: small size

Other Thoughts: some mb's will auto boot from this but not mine. you must have drivers on media to install windows

1 out of 5 eggsFried system twice

Pros: *solid state through a PCI-e port
newegg support

Cons: failure
fried entire system
half memory
price(at the time was much higher)
was a beta trial at the time and wasnt advertised as such

Other Thoughts: I think it was this hard drive that fried my system twice. I got blue screens of death after installing them and had serious issues with my new system and once I did get it running I also had the half memory thing other reviews mentioned and I was also told it was for caching.

I rma'd my entire system and got all new parts and it happened again. rather than be without a system I got sick of dealing with the issue and a couple moths into non stop repairs I just sold my new system as is. I see the manufacture is more than willing to RMA and so is Newegg(love you guys) but it just wasnt worth it to me at that point and I moved on.

I look forward to dealing with newegg with my next build.

Manufacturer Response:

I am sorry to hear about the problems with your new system build. The RevoDrive didn't cause catastrophic failure of your entire system and components. The RevoDrive only receives power from the PCIe slot and thus can't return more power than it receives. Damage to an entire system is generally related to a PSU or a system-wide component. I am not sure what you mean by a "beta trial". OCZ doesn't sell beta trial products or invite external beta testers via reseller websites.

It is very possible the RevoDrive isn't compatible with your motherboard, as the motherboard needs to have certain physical and electrical capabilities to run the RevoDrive properly (for example, at least a x4-x16 slot operating at >/= x4 link). This however wouldn't result in destruction of the entire system but the RevoDrive failing to operate.

We will gladly help you with anything we can. If we can be of help just contact us using the link below.

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support
