OCZ Vertex 3 Solid State Drives unleash the performance potential of the SATA 6Gbps interface, leading the speed revolution in this next-generation solution. As the first SSD to feature the latest SandForce controller design, OCZ designed the Vertex 3 to push the limits in both sequential and random read/write rates to blaze past the competition when every MB/s matters. With incredible 4k file writes up to 85,000 IOPS, these latest drives take productivity, gaming, and multimedia applications to the next level to work in perfect symmetry with the latest enthusiast platforms.

Built with the quality, reliability, and durability that lives up to the OCZ name, the Vertex 3 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows 7 companion.

  • newegg Industry-Leading Performance & Endurance Driven by the second generation of SandForce SSD controller (SF-2281), the Vertex 3 Series is designed and built to unleash the full potential of the 6Gbps SATA III interface. The Vertex 3 pushes the limits in both sequential and random data transfer rates, significantly improving your productivity, gaming, multimedia, and overall computing experience. In addition, the SSD controller’s integrated enhanced DuraClass Technology is architected to leverage today’s densest MLC NAND Flash memory, delivering best-in-class performance, endurance, security, and power efficiency in a “DRAM-less”, single chip solution.
  • newegg A Superior PC Experience In addition to maximum performance, a Vertex3 upgrade promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. With no moving parts, SSDs provide peace of mind with their superior durability and reliability. Vertex 3 SSDs work in perfect harmony with next generation platforms and operating systems to deliver the ultimate storage solution.
  • newegg TRIM Support The Vertex 3 Series SSDs offer native TRIM support featured in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

1 out of 5 eggsalmost one year to the day

Pros: I've enjoyed this hard drive for the most part. I haven't had a single issue with it.

Cons: ...until today. Almost one year to the day after I bought it the drive died...I knew SSDs were unreliable and I made semi-regular images of it just in case. I just didn't expect it to happen so quickly

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the difficulties. Please visit the link below and create a support ticket to arrange for an RMA. We will be happy to assist you. We care about our customers and are here to help. Thank you

4 out of 5 eggsFinally... with update

Pros: Fast... in one aspect: TOO fast. I have two PCI cards that don't initialize by the time Windows boots up for the first time from a cold boot. A simple reboot is all that is needed to get everything in order. (not that I cold boot often, nor that a reboot takes very long at all)
Otherwise, everything is very peppy, even coming from my old box with RAID10 of WD drives.

Cons: It finally took firmware update 2.15 being applied to get my system stable. After nearly 9 months of random, weekly system hangs and BSOD's, I've had 2.15 for over a month now and not a single issue remaining.
But for OCZ to release a product with such a common problem is uncalled for!

1 out of 5 eggsOCZ SSD are unreliable

Pros: Fast when working, relatively inexpensive to some other SSD drives

Cons: There are two reasons why people buy these drives, first they've most likely read a review upon how fast they are, like myself.

And second their price comparison to other SSD out on the market like Intel's

Other Thoughts: If your willing to take a chance on having a complete computer failure and lose your Data, but you want one of the fastest drives on the market. Then the decision is yours just don't say that no one ever warned you.

If your really concerned about reliability buy Intel's products, take a look at the reviews on their SSDs.
You probably wont notice the speed difference anyways.

Manufacturer Response:

We aplogize for any problems you may have experienced. While less than 1% of our SSD customers ever report an issue, we take any problem seriously. If we can be of assistance to you, please visit our support link below and create a support ticket, or visit our support forums and post in the Flash SSD section. We are here to help. Thank you

2 out of 5 eggsFast, but not fast enough.

Pros: Fast.
Works in Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" (running Windows 7).
Shipped with latest firmware (2.11).

Cons: Not as fast as the retail version (uses slower Toshiba asynchronous NAND, compared to the retail version).
See this discussion thread in the OCZ forum:

Other Thoughts: I know the title is a little confusing. Let me clarify. Most computer enthusiasts understand that when an "OEM" version of a hard drive is for sale, that usually means it comes in a brown box with no documentation, mounts, brackets, or cables. Other than that, the drive is essentially the same as a retail version. NOT SO FOR THIS DRIVE. The OEM version of this drive still uses the latest Sandforce controller, but uses a different type of NAND than that found in retail drives. It's still blazing fast, just not as fast as the retail Vertex 3 drives. (Listed speed and IOPS are a little lower than the retail drives). From the reviews I've been seeing online, I'd place it somewhere between the Vertex 3 and the Agility 3. Had I known this, I would have just bought the retail package. If they're the same price, stick with the retail box.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry for any confusion caused by the product description. We care about our customers and want your experience to be a good one. This info will be passed on. Thank you

4 out of 5 eggsGood SSD for me

Pros: Goes really fast, I had a Velociraptor before (10000RPM) and I save a few seconds in everything I load, (boot, browsers, games, etc.) It's quite awesome.

Cons: Expensive, if you are not a hardcore user and can wait, I would recommend to wait. The prices will drop sooner or later and you will get more space.

Get a 10000RPM first for less money and more Gigs.

Other Thoughts: Despite all the problems I've read on the Internet, I didn't have any BSOD yet that are related to the drive. I've installed Firmware 2.15 as soon as I got the drive (it was on 2.13 when I got it).

Tried it for two days now, currently installing all my programs. I will get a better feeling after a month or so for the reliability.

4 out of 5 eggsGetting Better

Pros: Very fast, especially with Ver. 2.15 Firmware.
Lenovo X220 i7, 8gb ram
Boot up: 38sec. with bios
Photoshop: 4 sec. (yes 4 seconds)
Lightroom: 6.5 sec.
Firefox: 5 sec.
Excel or Word: 2.8 sec.
Outlook 2010: 8 sec.
Explorer: 5 sec.

Cons: Gave me problems initially with freezing in the earlier Firmware releases.

Other Thoughts: This is my third review and I just got finished updating the Firmware to Ver 2.15 from 2.09. It is noticeably faster now. As long as it remains working I am happy. I am now considering upgrading my desktop because my Laptop is now much faster. Boot up with my overclocked Core 2 Q9550 and a 1TB WD Caviar Black seem to take forever by comparison. I realize boot up is not everything, but to be honest I don't do a great deal of file intensive computing.

1 out of 5 eggsHey OCZ... nice reliability there

Pros: The speed numbers are not made up, it really goes as fast as it says.. well, if you can keep your computer running long enough to test it (see cons).

Cons: Buggy as all H*<bleep>. Your computer will freeze if you use this for more than a few minutes.

If you don't mind restarting your computer in the middle of a gaming session, or while you are doing something important, then this is just the drive for you.

Other Thoughts: I noticed a bunch of OCZ reponses to comments people left on here, they generally go like "Sorry for the problems, less than 1% of folks experience issues, sorry it was you". Blatant lie.

Interesting that if you check out all the verified buyers on newegg, it's 25%, not 1%, that rate it 1 star.

They might say, well not everyone leaves a review. I say - lots of buyers on here use their computer like once a day so they wouldn't even know if there were reliability issues because they don't use it enough, otherwise it would be 100%.

I tried it in a mac laptop, a PC laptop, and even a desktop. 0 for 3. Each one froze at least once in any 24h period, although they all worked fine with their previous hard disks. Folks that claim something about that it depends on your computer are full of it. It doesn't depend on anything I can discover - the drive will freeze any computer I try indiscriminately.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry that are experiencing issues. Please visit our support forums and post for assistance. We will be happy to help you with setup procedures and troubleshooting to determine if your drive is functioning as it should. The less than 1% we speak of is based on total sales volume of SSD drives. We realize that some customers do have difficulties, and we are committed to resolving them. We are here to help. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsSave yourself a lot of trouble

Pros: Fast when works. 2.5" to 3.5" bracket was in the box.

Cons: I own the drive since June'11.
Firmware development at OCZ has disintegrated. Every new firmware is less stable, and their support just runs people around demanding full drive erases, motherboard BIOS updates, full CMOS erases, driver reinstalls, sleep state disables and dozens of other non-working pseudo-solutions (when all other storage products with same motherboards/BIOSes/drivers just work). Just read their forums

If you want crashes every hour and no real help, buy this SSD. Otherwise, look elsewere. No wonder it went from $550 to $440 in 4 short months.

Other Thoughts: BTW, it is not the fastest too. Where it matters (specifically, short reads) there are faster drives. And new FW releases make it slower (but not any more stable). I am a software engineer with 20 years of experience of building and configuring computers. This company is just a fraud by now.

Manufacturer Response:

We sincerely aplogize for the difficulties. While less then 1% of our SSD customers experience issues, we care about each one and work hard to provide assistance. Please visit the link below and create a support ticket to get in touch with our staff. We will be happy to assist you to find a workable solution. Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsfast, but....

Pros: Fast

Cons: Expensive, coming from spinning platters of usual HDDs

Other Thoughts: This is my first SSD, it replaced my 600gb Velociraptor and although my boot times are a tad faster and my game load times seem to shave a second or two, I'm not as impressed as I thought I'd be, and with the SSD reliability being only so many writes until failure? I kept my Velociraptor and put my swap file on it to help with reliability. But will most likely not purchase another any time soon.

4 out of 5 eggsShips with *old* firmware.

Pros: Extremely fast SSD.

Cons: This OEM version of the drive ships with version 2.02 of the firmware. Version 2.11 is current. The Windows utility will not update from version 2.02, rather it requires a minimum of 2.06. Therefore, you have to update the firmware from a Linux CD, which will update directly to 2.11. I think *somebody* should post that at the top of this page. I also ordered a retail copy of this drive and it ships with 2.08. Some users might find this difficult.
