The OCZ Synapse Series is optimized for caching applications to dynamically manage the Synapse SSD in conjunction with standard hard disk drives (HDDs), to provide users with SSD-level performance across the entire capacity of the HDD. The OCZ Synapse Series leverages the latest and most advanced hardware and software technology to deliver superior storage performance without sacrificing HDD capacity. For users craving the performance advantages of SSDs combined with the high capacities associated with HDDs, OCZ offers the first no-compromise approach to enabling high-performance and high-capacity storage for virtually any PC platform.

The OCZ Synapse Series integrates Dataplex caching software to dynamically manage the use of both SSD and HDD for superior overall storage performance. This combination creates an environment where the most frequently used "hot" data stays on the ultra-fast SSD, while the "cold" data remains on the larger capacity HDD (sold separately). Advanced caching algorithms learn user behavior and adapt storage policies to ensure optimal performance for each individual user, maximizing productivity for the most demanded programs and applications.

Synapse Series integrates seamlessly within any modern PC platform, ensuring optimal compatibility along with performance gains. (Synapse Cache FAQs:

  • newegg High Performance SSD Architecture The OCZ Synapse Series, an easy-to-deploy 2.5" solution for multiple drive bays, maximizes performance and unleash the full potential of today’s leading platforms with its SATA 6 Gb/s interface and SandForce 2281 SSD processor.
  • newegg Integrated Dataplex Caching Software The Integrated Dataplex Caching Software Intelligently manages HDD and SSD simultaneously. “Hot” data is transferred to Synapse SSD for highest performance, access, and bandwidth and “Cold”data is routed to HDD for highest capacity usage. No data migration or OS installation required.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Synapse Series offers native TRIM support featured in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to earlier review

Pros: Easy to install, speeds up boot times - I have had no problems with this at all

Cons: None. In my earlier review I had thought there was a problem because it only read as 59 GB for a 128. This is normal per the OCZ website.

3 out of 5 eggsocz 128gb cache drive

Pros: seems to work very well, got it on sale for a good price

Cons: It is only reading as 59 gb, when I bought the 128gb.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, our cache drives uses 1/2 of the available capacity for cache memory, and the other half for normal drive use. Your drive does have 128gb capacity, as the other 59gb is being used for cache purposes. If we can answer any questions please visit our support forums at the link below. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsStick with Intel RST

Pros: Worked for some

Great (in theory) for caching your slow OS HDD without managing multiple drives or a small SDD

Cons: - Software mates HDD and SSD so that it no longer boots independently
- Random hardware conflicts create a non-booting system
- "Bypass" for software resulted in another boot loop
- Google search for similar problems resulted in many threads with OP just giving up
- I had to reinstall windows to undo the damage

Other Thoughts: I did a lot of research prior to getting this drive for my brother's system. Now that I've spent a whole day changing settings, sata ports, googling, and ultimately failing to return even once to a successful Windows boot, I ultimately gave up. The whole idea of a cache is that if the SSD malfunctions you still have a functional OS drive. Not entirely true with the Dataplex software, it completely changes your boot sequence so that if I took my Dataplex'd HDD to someone else's machine and plugged it in the other machine would not recognize my OS/Files. Also, don't downplay the "rebuilding cache" aspect of this drive. If you suffer a power out, OC too far, or just randomly BSOD, you might have to sit through a very long (hour) automated remap of the drive. Seems pretty silly to try and save a few seconds on boot only to stare at a black screen for much much longer. This is a great idea that is either poorly executed and/or not ready for mass distribution.

5 out of 5 eggsSo happy I bought this

Pros: Stunning performance compared to standard HD. 7+ minute Win 7 OS bootup (I have extras running on startup) reduced to <1 min. Stuff pops open instantly. I'm a graphics designer/illustrator and my big, heavy graphics programs open SO MUCH faster. Performance is better than I expected. I would recommend this drive to anyone who wants both SSD speeds combined with the storage capacity of a non-SSD hard drive, combined with not having to reinstall your OS and all your programs. It works with your existing boot drive, caching the files and programs that you use onto the SSD drive. Installation and setup was very simple.

Cons: Wish I had bought one sooner.

Other Thoughts: No problems setting it up. Just remember to switch from IDE to AHCI for this drive before you install the Dataplex software. I didn't do this, so had to uninstall Dataplex, switch system to AHCI, then reinstall Dataplex. (Google info on switching from IDE to AHCI.)

By the way, I had a question, went on OCZ forums, they responded very quickly. Great support. I'm really happy I bought this.

5 out of 5 eggsCache any HDD to SSD Speed!!

Pros: This drive does exactly what it promises. Giving you SSD performance from your standard HDD on your exhisting Windows 7 install. Easy to setup, and nothing to do, it works automatically from there. Reduces game load times by 50% or more. Windows boot time triple the speed. This drive cache's my full 2 TB Raid Volume (out of 4TB total) which is split into two partitons, OS parition and other parition I install my games and programs to.

Cons: Doesn't support more than 2 tb partiton or more than one HDD or RAID Volume. Only supports windows 7, doesn't support two of the synapse drives in RAID0.

Other Thoughts: I reccomended the Synapse drive who use it on computers with a SATAII Controller. They're both using RAID HDD's and notice massive improvements in application load times, especially MS Outlook. I have a SATAIII Controller, I got 550 Reads and 500 writes on ATTO benchmark. Wonderful performance, worls flawlessly, and no problems with the cache even when i've had the occasional blue screen (do to overclock testing). Get it, you wont be sorry.

5 out of 5 eggsOCZ drive is a must have for me now.

Pros: I did not experience the problems people have had with installing this
drive. I got it up and running very quickly, even making sure I fully understood what it was doing along the install path.

It has solved all the performance problem I have had my system that I would not solve with even a raid of other SSD drives.

Cons: The only CON is that it can cache only one drive. Not a big deal for me as I thought it would me.

Other Thoughts: I would HIGHlY recommend this drive. Boot times increased greatly. Loading apps greatly improved. App performance is greatly improved.

5 out of 5 eggs4 months in update.

Pros: Still stand by my original review love this drive to death. Boot times are still just as fast as when very 1st cached and game load times are just staggering after you load and quit them a few times to get Dataplex to cache the data onto the SSD. There was a recent update like 2-3 weeks ago that addressed the improper shut down and drastically cut the time the drive took to "rebuild" itself from an improper shut down and got a slight performance boost out of the drive. Only time will tell when this drive will fail but so far I really enjoy the lightning fast boot and load times.

Cons: Beware of trying Windows 8 preview as OCZ still doesn't officially support it and according to Microsoft Support the Cache Drive is what actually corrupted my boot drive when trying to upgrade to Windows 8 preview costing me all my data everywhere and having to get in touch with OCZ Customer Service to get a new license because I was forced to reformat my entire 2tb Boot Drive. I'd hold off trying Windows 8 until retail / OCZ supports it.

Other Thoughts: Minus the whole Windows 8 Upgrade fiasco I went threw I still highly recommend this for speeding up your system AS long as you are running Windows 7 until OCZ supports Windows 8 and of course when Windows 8 is out in retail form so you won't run into any major bugs like I have. Slight suggestion if anyone from OCZ is actually reading this it's nothing major but I would like a tool to see how much space is left on the SSD from time to time because I get curious maybe perhaps in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsAddendum To March 9th Review

Pros: This has enhanced system performance considerably. This would be a 5 star performer, had I not had so much difficulty setting it up initially. It will be a 5 star for the person who sets the drive up successfully the first time, and understands what the drive is all about.

Cons: This drive set up successfully, but the Dataplex software did not, without several contacts with OCZ tech support. After a "secure erase" of the ssd, I was able to get the Dataplex software to work, and it is making a believer out of one of my customers, who chose to be the guinea pig for me.

Other Thoughts: I have assembled and tested more than 100 systems with solid state hard drives, and this is the first one with the OCZ Synapse drive. I used it as a system enhancement for a LGA1366 system, for a customer using Photoshop and associated software, and, in the end, mission was/is accomplished, with my customer being quite pleased.

1 out of 5 eggsSoftware Does Not Work

Pros: If the Dataplex software would work, this would (probably) be the hardware answer that I was looking for storage

Cons: I paid a lot of ,money, and spent over 6 hours, on the installation of a device that should have taken less than 10 minutes. I am awaiting a response from OCZ. I am building this computer for a customer, and this is costing me dearly!

Other Thoughts: The drive itself installed properly, and became attached to the 1 Tb boot hard drive as designed (became "hidden" to the operating system as the cache drive), but the Dataplex software would not enable itself, even after uninstalling and reinstalling a dozen times.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked for me too; for the 1st week

Pros: Very fast when it works and does not make your system crash.

Cons: I installed this on 2 computers: The first I had to completely reformat and reinstall Win7 due to this products software. The second computer has issues again with the software: I was told I had to reinstall WIN7 from scratch to try to get it to work.... all documented with OCZ tech support. Do not say you have not been warned if you buy this.

Other Thoughts: Wait a few weeks before posting a comment on this product!!!! You'll be surprised as to how little positive feedback you will see if everyone would just wait a few weeks. In my 28 years with computers... this is the ,most overhyped and problematic product ever..... no exageration

Manufacturer Response:

We aplogize for the inconvenience. We are confident that once your OS is installed, your system will work out fine for you. Thank you
