2 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

Pros: All the positives of being an SSD.

Cons: Died within 6 months under light and casual usage.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for. In this case cheap price = cheap quality.

5 out of 5 eggsNot all OCZ drives are bad!

Pros: *Reliable! Which is something not many have been saying about OCZ drives. The thing is, the OCZ Octane doesn't use the infamous Sandforce controller. It uses the Indilinx Controller which is much more reliable

* Fast with compressed files (e.g. mp3s)

*Comes with latest firmware 1.14. This firmware update is super important as it added noticeable speed to Read and Random Write times

Cons: A tad bit slower than some other speed demon SSDs out there, but its all relative. An SSD is an SSD, which means its still incredibly faster than HDD.

Other Thoughts: Originally I bought an Agility 3 SSD because it was combo'd with my Asrock Extreme 4 Z77 mobo. That drive arrived DOA so I went to a local NYC electronics store and picked the Octane up while it was on sale.

I put my OS on this Octane. At the same time I got a replacement Agility 3 and set that up as my second drive for games and media. Three weeks later the Agility 3 died and I'm now waiting for a 2nd replacement. Meanwhile, the OCZ Octane has remained consistent without ANY issues. I know people say OCZ is unreliable, but it comes down to the controller!

4 out of 5 eggsWorking great everyday use

Pros: - Upgraded firmware and installed Win 7 easily.
- Gave a good win 7 score, but more importantly user experience is good.
- After POST system boots in about 10 seconds. Win 7 globes don't even touch and i'm at desktop working, great!

Cons: - In hindsight I wish I would have gotten the 256 or even 512, but I manage to keep the installed programs to a minimum ~ 2 games and some productivity stuff.

Other Thoughts: I ordered this before the Sammy drives dipped, I wish I would have waited because I FEEL that I may have been better off getting Sammy, but this drive works just great, so owell.

I have been using my system from anywhere from 1 hour to 10 hours a day almost every day for the past 3 months and no discernable issues.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drive

Pros: on SATA-2, 200MB/s write, 280MB/s read
4k 84MB/s write 83MB/s read

I hope to upgrade my board ot SATA-3. There was a 10-15% gain on performance with AHCI enabled. TRIM got enabled automatically.

With a light tweak 26GB used and 93GB free out of 119GB available space.

My board with Q6600 is a bit older and I do not expected it to work well with SSD that squeeze every limit of my motherboard but it is working fine with all the drivers installed.

Cons: There were few installation glitches which were gone by the time Intel INFs and motherboard drivers are installed. Initial file copy during installation was exceptionally slow for some reason.

Other Thoughts: There are many and many OCZ bashers. I now question their skill level. This drive is well made and works well.

And for those nit-pickers. Once you graduate to SSD the difference in good SSD are not much noticeable. Go for the value once review sites claim the product to be decent. Because any of them will blow HDD off the chart.

4 out of 5 eggsLooking good so far

Pros: Motherboard Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L SATA-2(3Gbps)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 - 5GB RAM
Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz
Octane 128GB SyncMLC + Samsung HD753LJ

Size Write Read
-- AHCI Mode --
4k 84MB 84MB
32k 203MB 230MB
4096k 209MB 280MB
-- IDE Mode --
4k 60MB 55MB
64k 198MB 220MB
1024k 206MB 240MB (Max)

My initial expectation was that my PC will fly off my desk. It didn't fly. Odd, how fast I get use to performance. All my measure tells me that everything I do is double or triple in performance. I can't tell. ;)

Picasa opens in a snap. Google Earth is now a very enjoyable experience as it is very snappy when it starts pulling data off its cache on the SSD. This alone I believe is worth the Benjamin.

SSD Tweak and Its Contradiction

While I was tweaking my SSD for Win7, I realized that the very tweak I was applying was actually taking away the key benefit of the SSD.

If you read around, you will be led to believe moving temp files off SSD to HDD will be beneficial. Well. No

Cons: 1 little hiccup I am still not sure about.

Capacity. Buy higher capacity SSD. Simple math. MLC SSD is good for 1000 writes. 128GBx1000 give you 128TB write space. 256GB will double the life of SSD as 514GB will double that. So size of SSD is in fact life span of the SSD. Larger SSD will stay up longer.

Having moved most write to HDD, my SSD should last me 10 years. But that isn't the point of SSD. All temp should be on the SSD because of its fast latency compared to HDD that is very thing that makes SSD based system much faster than HDD. Can't wait to get 514 GB SSD in near future and have everything on the SSD.

SSD Optimization has to be done at OS level by Microsoft. Tweaks done by users by moving temporary files is a sad compromise between performance and life span of SSD. You get to pick. But very poorly managed and untweak very low capacity SSD (60GB) now I realize can be dead in my of 6 months if I try hard. That is only 60TB of write space and with most of it full.

Other Thoughts: AHCI mode seems to be the key to the stability of the system. Likely newer the motherboard you will have less problem than older cheaper boards.

Installed without AHCI and There was performance penalty of about 10-15%. There is a way to turn on AHCI without reinstalling Windows. But just maybe I should reinstall with AHCI turned on which is the proper way to install Windows.

There seems to be multiple hiccups and with driver updates most seems to have gone away. Intel INF update seems to be the key to the stability.

There is one more hiccup that I still have. When I run WOW off HDD system crashed. Not replicable exactly but I have suspicion AHCI is causing the crash. I am saying it seems to be AHCI + HDD problem.

4 out of 5 eggsForget the "no wait" rebate

Pros: Drive came with latest firmware. Installed easily with fresh copy of Win7. Very fast of course, running this in a 3 year old desktop with SATA 2 only and still makes a noticeable improvement, so glad I didn't wait for my next build this fall.

Cons: OCZ "no wait" rebate deducts 10% to speed up your rebate, supposedly 7 days to mail after they get your documentation. Mine took 20 days and I live in an adjacent state to the processing center.

Other Thoughts: Although mine had the latest software there was no sticker on the drive to indicate it. Down load the app from OCZ to check/update firmware before install OS.
