5 out of 5 eggsVertex 4 25SAT3-512G M

Pros: Fast, reliable, high capacity, solid SSD. Purchased on late December of 2013 from M1cr0 C3n73r for approx. $320 before tax and still going strong (Pulled the box, blew off the dust off the box and still have the receipt). I *just* replaced it with a 1TB Samsung SSD and may transfer it to another one of my machines. Have nothing but good things to say about having owning this drive!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This was my first SSD to have ever owned. I was uncertain as what to expect from an SSD much less from an OCZ brand as I have never owned an OCZ product before. I must say I have not been disappointed. it will be hard for me to let go of this drive.

I couldn't help but notice two things... the significant increase of cost (rather than a decrease, but, oh well, I guess) and some of the negative reviews this product has received. Personally I have not had any issues using this drive between three computers, connecting it internally & externally and its durability. Some are just plain unlucky I suppose.

On another note, I shall add that the Samsung drives are certainly faster and more reliable, but this OCZ vertex drive also outperforms those of the Crucial, Sandisk and PNY brands from my experience. Having said that I must say this product is highly recommended.

1 out of 5 eggsThey don't last

Pros: It work well when it was working. warranty is 5 years which I've used for both.

Cons: Bought two of these to run in RAID 0. First one died after 10mo. then the second one died after 19mo. Don't recommend.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anonymous,

OCZ sincerely appreciates that you purchased the Vertex 4 for use in your system RAID0. I am sorry to read both drives have required a warranty replacement at some point; that certainly doesn't meet our expectations for product reliability. Our goal is to provide the best service and support in the industry. We will stand behind the product for the entire length of the 5-year warranty period. Please let us know if you run into any problems moving forward. You can contact us anytime using the link provided below.

Best Regards,

OCZ Storage Solutions

5 out of 5 eggsfast and easy

Pros: Pop it in, change bios to ahci, run cmd prompt to adjust lead in and lead out parameters, acronis old installation over, and enjoy instant boots of everything... Also drive is very sturdy.
If you have problems with this drive, the most likely cause is user error.

Cons: None.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Recommended

Pros: The drive IS fast.

Cons: The drive died, spectacularly, in two years and four months.

Other Thoughts: OCZ throws some great technology into their drives and one of them is built in obsolesce. I have had drives last for YEARS, and that is what I am going to return to.

5 out of 5 eggsThe fully monty - The Vertex 4

Pros: So, the Vertex 4 drives are FAST, and 512GB versions are not an exception. I'm seeing about 480MB/sec on standard writes in AS-SSD, and 90MB/sec in 4k writes using an Intel X79 GigaByte G1.Assassin2 with a MODIFIED BIOS. Also, during the inital testing using an LSI 9271-4i and the Intel RST Enterprise RAID 0 firmware and drivers for the motherboard, one of the Vertex 4 drives kept failing, and OCZ REPLACED THE DRIVE WITHOUT QUESTION.

Cons: Whenever you install a new OS, you MUST use the secure erase tool from OCZ to wipe the drive(s) prior to installing a new OS, or restoring an OS (think Acronis, Paragon, or Windows Backup). Not really a con, but if you don't do it, you may have issues.

Other Thoughts: I see a lot of reviews where people seem less than pleased. The real issue is that 90% of the time the problem is NOT OCZ, but your storage controller and the related drivers. For example: I have a Gigabyte G1.Assassin2 X79 motherboard. This motherboard should be flawless, but it's not. The OROM for the Intel SATA III controllers is OLD, and the older firmware from Gigabyte causes one of the Vertex 4 drives to DROP from any RAID 0 array randomly. Moreover, the dropped drive is NO LONGER DECTECTED by the Intel SATA controller with the 11.5 OROM. (OCZ is likely not running to replace drives right now because they probably have been a victim of Intel, LSI, and others not updating their firmware, and, especially a victim of motherboard manufacturers not updating their firmware [e.g. OROMs] to properly support SSD drives in general.) I've also used an LSI 9271-4i controller with FASTPATH and a BBU. I've had nothing but issues with the system intermitantly crashing, and the issue eventually tracked back to what one of the other reviewers said: LSI does not make provisions to support the Vertex 4, and the DO NOT support the MAJORITY of motherboards out there. I recommend that you ensure your motherboard has extremely current Intel or AMD (etc) OROMs for the storage controller, and that their website shows very current drivers for all of the subsystems prior to purchasing any motherboard. This is the primary and ONLY reason that you tend to have issues with the Vertex 4 drive, and that is generally only when running it in RAID 0. [I have 2 in RAID 0 now without issue, and had 3 on the LSI controller with tons of issues.] Barring that, if you have a newer Intel motherboard, you may want to find an update BIOS that includes that latest 12.6 OROM for the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (if it's an Intel based system). Most issues with RAID and the Vertex 4 are FIRMWARE issues from the motherboard manufacturer, and not the SSDs... which seem pretty darned good.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Fast drive

Cons: Died in about 10 months. OCZ replaced it on warranty in a reasonable time.

Other Thoughts: For what I do (software development on Linux (Ubuntu 12.04)) performance gain was nice, but not amazing. Maxing our RAM has a better impact as that is the filesystem cache.

1 out of 5 eggsSlow as Sap

Pros: Newegg Customer Service is one of the best I have experienced across all industries. Makes me not mind the D.O.A drive so much.

Cons: Didn't work right off the bat. Connected drive, and would not read or respond. Caused boot to slow down to a crawl. Bios recognized it, but couldn't do much else. Used Acronis to reformat NTFS. Still would not do anything. Had no other choice but to return it. Getting a replacement will take a little over a week. I got a slip from UPS on Monday, confirmation RMA received it and processed new order on Thursday. Expecting new one on following Tuesday.

Other Thoughts: I had BloatOS Windows 8, which I sent to Hades. Was reinstalling Windows 7 fresh, and needed a larger replacement drive. I do plan on using this as my primary drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear FatCobra,

If you experience any issues with the replacement please visit our Support Forum and we will help. Make sure you don't perform any full formats on the drive with 3rd party utilities, that isn't necessary. We have support available for such issues and can quickly troubleshoot and resolve problems like this.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience.

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support

5 out of 5 eggsCan't wait for ssd to be mainstream

Pros: Fast.

Cons: Price, but that will keep changing. No buyer's remorse here. I thought I had a bad drive at first because the os installs kept failing. Then I noticed a strange liquid in my cd drive. I had a talk with my 4 year old and then everything was better.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a great product

Pros: It's fast.

Cons: Very expensive.
Very hard to get the os loaded on it.
Will not work in any external enclosure I've tried (5 different ones.) This makes cloning your existing drive onto it nearly impossible. Have to load the OS from scratch and it's quite painful.
Died after 4 months = BSOD.
OCZ being real difficult about getting this very expensive doorstop replaced.

Manufacturer Response:

Occasionally external enclosures do not provide the necessary power to work properly with the Vertex 4. In rare cases, placing the drive in an un-powered enclosure not meeting the power requirements of the drive may have led to failure. Our Support Forum can assist in getting you setup properly including advice for cloning your existing installation or a drive replacement. Please contact us via the link below and we will help however possible. Thanks!

5 out of 5 eggsSpeedy Drive

Pros: It is fast in both read and write, some SSDs lack in either one, this one takes both to a excellent speed.

Cons: It fills up to quickly, one christmas special from steam filled up my 512GB of room.

Other Thoughts: Overall it is a very nice SSD to get, and it is worth the money.
