4 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

Pros: Nice and fast! First one died but the new one has been fast and perfect for over 6 months now.

Cons: The first one died right at 1 month so I could not return it to NewEgg. But OCZ's RMA service was quick. A brand new SSD arrived only 9 days after I mailed the RMA back. Minus the one egg for the first SSD. Hope this one lasts.

5 out of 5 eggssuper fast!

Pros: super fast & reliable

Cons: all SSD's are still over priced

Other Thoughts: The is my 3rd OCZ SSD and all of them were super easy to set up and so far very reliable. Since I installed my first OCZ about a year ago, I won't even consider using a HDD for my boot drive anymore. I'm getting consistant read speeds in excess of 450Mb/s and write speeds of about 420Mb/s on my 2012 MacBook Pro

5 out of 5 eggsgreat value

Pros: Great price on a 512gb. Just two years ago this would cost more than my high performance desktop. This is the perfect drive to put in your system if you only have SATA II since the faster drives will be slowed down from the SATA II bottleneck.

Cons: None so far

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Worked out of the box. Well, at least after I connected it to an ICH10R SATA controller.
-Came with a free USB 2.0 external enclosure. (I refuse to call the "OCZ SSD Upgrade Kit" anything more than that. I only used the USB enclosure part, and only briefly.)

Cons: -Incompatible with my board's Marvell 9128 controller. As in, the controller will connect to a hard drive quite easily but, to this SSD, it doesn't recognize it. (-0 eggs)
-Only getting SATA-II connection, because of said Marvell 9128 controller. (-0 eggs)
-Read IOPS leaves a lot to be desired. (-1 egg)
-Spartan package--just the SSD in the blister pack. A useless manual and a cheesy "My SSD is Faster than your HDD" sticker were included too.

Other Thoughts: -Asus Sabertooth X58---with a stubborn Marvell 9128 controller.
-3xWD Raptor 150GB RAID0
-2xWD Black 1TB RAID0
-In SATA-II mode, both RAID arrays can match the SSD in transfer speeds but, as per their mechanical nature, have higher latency and less consistency.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great--2012 Macbook Pro

Pros: Big speed upgrade for all apps, good price when on sale, big capacity, supports TRIM, reliable so far

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Put the drive in a USB enclosure first to format it and make sure it was not DOA. Then installed it and did an internet recovery of OS 10.8, then used Disk Utility to do a block restore from my old boot disk (now in the USB enclosure). All seems great. I ran the Chameleon TRIM utility afterwards. Not all SSD's support TRIM, but the OCZ 4 is one that does.

All of my former apps are now really fast--at least 5x faster. Photoshop/Bridge and MS Office 2011 are all very zippy (Office for Mac is a real dog when it comes to disk access, so the large SSD really helps it a lot.) Even games (eg Doom 3, Bioshock, etc..) load up immediately.

This drive is about 30% slower than some top end units (like the Vertex family), but it was a lot less expensive, and as far as I'm concerned it has erased the bottleneck that was my HDD.

1 out of 5 eggsOCZ have imposed a crippling read cap on the drives

Pros: Amazing 410MB/s write speeds. 512GB..

Cons: Both Crystal mark with 0 fill (no compression) and Atto Benchmark show that the new firmware limits read speeds to 250MB/s and the write speeds are a huge 410MB/s. I can not get tech support on the forum because of my failure rate accociated with past OCZ SSD products.

Other Thoughts: Terrible that they did this to the drive. Probably to increase reliability.

Manufacturer Response:

Please visit the link below and create a support ticket if you are unable to use our support forums. Read speed normally are higher than write speeds by nature of the memory chips used in SSD drives. We have no personal knowledge of arbitrary speed caps and will be happy to answer any questions you may have to the best of our ability. Thank you

3 out of 5 eggsFast disk, if it works

Pros: Fast and stable in a hardware RAID on an LSI-9266 in a Linux server.

Cons: 2 of 10 disks arrived DOA. Newegg is very good at issuing and processing RMAs, so no problems there.

Other Thoughts: While these drives are cheap, it's not a bad deal, but that we had a 20% failure rate out of the box, it's unlikely that we'll order more of this particular drive.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the unusual rate of difficulties. We are confident that your replacements will work out well for you. If we can be of any assistance in the future, please visit our support forums at the link below. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsFS corrupted after 1 day - very disappointed

Pros: large size?

Cons: it is actually slow drive...reading is really slow. The biggest problem is that my os got corrupted in 1 day of use. interestingly i got first blue screen of death with my laptop after i installed this drive. simply not worth $300.

Other Thoughts: I hope to get my money back so i can buy something that really works

3 out of 5 eggsRMA once...

Pros: This drive is fast for the money. Works perfectly in my 2011 17" macbook pro for the most part...

Cons: I had to RMA the drive once it was DOA. I'm now seeing consistent crashes, I'm worried that the drive is going fail soon...hopefully it doesn't I really don't want to deal with a warranty claim.

2 out of 5 eggsRough start

Pros: Excellent price / capacity / performance.

Cons: Pain in the a... Unit worked long enough to clone a 380G existing tried-and-true 2010 15" Macbook Pro 10.7 system using an external FW800 enclosure. Booted from ext, then installed in Mac and rebooted. System immediately unstable with volume corruption, volume unrepairable. Updated firmware to 1.5 and Secure Erase--a pain cause no Mac tools from OCZ, and requires AHCI-capable SATA on PC to update firmware. No joy after update. Completely unstable. RMA with OCZ. They report could find no problem with unit, but sent a replacement at my request. Replacement DOA. Appeared to be open-box. RMA again. 3rd unit came in clean packaging and is working to write this review. Tho it's only been a day.

Other Thoughts: Unit doesn't work in a cheap bus-powered (two port cable) USB enclosure, even tho the enclosure works fine with several other hard disks and a brick powered FW enclosure.

OCZ now offers a Mac compatible firmware upgrade download that works.

OCZ generously covered the RMA shipping.

OCZ support was mildly dismissive of original complaint when their tests indicated no problem. 'Said they tested on a AMD and it looks good, putting me in the position of having to request a replacement. The DOA replacement was in insecure packaging and looked previously handled. With 2nd RMA they just pushed it on through and didn't argue. It arrived in secure blisterpack and looked fresh.

Support tickets are deleted after a week, bit it took then longer than that to get me the shipping label, so they aren't into keeping the lines of communication open for support dialog.
