5 out of 5 eggsso so ssd

Pros: installed this in ide notebook where I had to get ide to ssd converter. performancewise it did better than my original drive, but it wasn't more than 1/3 increase. now people tha already have ssd drive will see a higher increase in performance. Battery life also increased. for 30 bucks it wasn't a bad investment at all

Cons: none

2 out of 5 eggsDrive broke this weekend. No warning signs.

Pros: quiet, cool, fast.

Cons: It just died, no warning. It's been 1 year plus 3 weeks since purchase.

I have to figure out how to get it fixed, and can I get data out of it. I have 3 other SSD, not this model, and this is my first experience with SSD going dead. Makes me worry about the other SSD.

With HDD, sometimes you head clicking noise ahead and it feels sluggish during certain part of the HDD reads and you can still get most data out of it before it goes fully dead.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear raywzou,

What you have experienced is one of the differences betweeen a SSD and HDD. A SSD is largely electrical where a HDD is largely mechanical. As such there are fewer problems but also fewer warning signs with a SSD problem than a HDD problem. Data recovery from a failed SSD is usually difficult if no backup is in place. If the drive has truly failed and is not detected by any system a 3rd party data recovery would need to be contacted about recovery options. Our Support can suggest approved companies that specialize in data recovery if necessary.

If the drive is not detecting the first step you need to take is unplugging the drive data and power source. Often times allowing the drive to "drain" for at least 4 hours will result in the drive being detected again. If it fails to be detected you can use the link below to create a support ticket and request we test and replace the drive in accordance with the warranty terms.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience!

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support

2 out of 5 eggsJust died after a year and few days. Yay.

Pros: When it worked, it worked like a regular SSD

Cons: Mine lasted for a year and a few days. I sent an RMA, I hope it is still under warranty. I forget how painful it is to re-install Windows and everything else every year, next purchase will be for a reliable drive.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap but Meh

Pros: SDD drive, tiny (like all SDD drives), cheap

Cons: Performance better than conventional hard disk for boot drive, but fell short of other benchmarks for competing SDD drives. Not the "Whiz Bang!" effect I anticipated. Small size poses problems for boot drive configuration.

Other Thoughts: With a clean install of Windows 7 Home Edition Premium, the 57Gb (after partitioning/formatting) had only about 4.6Gb of free space after installing SP1 and all the Windows Updates. Had to modify profile settings and juggle default settings to free up about 14Gb of free space on the drive. This is with using a Western Digital Black 1Tb drive as the data drive for the system to install applications... In retrospect, I probably should have shelled out the extra $$$ for a 120Gb drive.

5 out of 5 eggsOCZ Vertex Plus R2

Pros: So far so good. I purchased this to upgrade the HD on my launch model 60GB PS3. PS3 recognized it right away and initiated format. No issues at this time but there was a noticeable decrease on load times on Skyrim.

Cons: No cons that I am able to notice. Only bad thing about SSD's in PS3 is that there is no TRIM support. This really should not be an issue since there will not be too many re-writes.

2 out of 5 eggsWeird power issues

Pros: Decent performance for the price

Cons: Not a super fast SSD (still faster than traditional hard drives)
Would not boot in my desktop or 2 laptops I tried unless it was unplugged and plugged back in after every boot (weird issue)

Other Thoughts: I RMA'd the drive with OCZ and they replaced it with the VTX3-25SAT3-60G which is a much faster drive and uses a newer/better controller which I suspect was the problem with booting. The Vertex 2 uses Indilinx rather than the newer Sandforce which may be a problem for you.
