Based on a cutting-edge new architecture, Vertex 2 Solid State Drives deliver unprecedented performance while maintaining an affordable storage solution for early adopters looking to update their systems with the latest technology. OCZ designed the Vertex 2 to excel in both sequential and random read/write rates to take your PC or notebook productivity to the next level, featuring superb 4KB random writes up to 50,000 IOPS to give a performance edge over the previous generation. Using the latest controller technology, Vertex 2 not only provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, but promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, the Vertex 2 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows 7 notebook or desktop upgrade.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSD’s translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg Better Performance Built with MLC NAND flash and the latest generation SandForce SF1200 controller featuring award winning DuraClass Technology, the OCZ Vertex 2 240GB SSD delivers industry-leading SSD reliability, performance, and power efficiency, with maximum read speed up to 285 MB/s and maximum write speed up to 275 MB/s, plus incredible random 4K write performance of 50,000 IOPS.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSD’s offer native TRIM support than can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: price at under $100 for 240gb
speed of read and write

Cons: flaky to install
size drastically smaller then advertised even when taking into account formatting and os.
very poor ssd toolbox not like intels.

Other Thoughts: ocz needs to step up its game on ssd toolbox software.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It was wonderful while it worked... good speed, good access rate, quick writes, fast boot time, all at an economical price.

Cons: Had a little trouble with drive being recognized by any OS at first. Died after a few months. No matter how good a drive is, one that dies after a short time under a very low load isn't worth much more than a paperweight.

Other Thoughts: I bought refurbished. I got what I paid for... Get one with a warranty! Remember, recovering data from a dead ssd is much more expensive than a dead hdd. Use a flash drive to store important docs.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA, not recognized in 3 different PCs

Pros: cheap for the storage capacity (if it works at all)
thoroughly heat-sealed packaging
would have been MUCH faster than my current WD Caviar

Cons: DOA
would not work in 3 different PCs, WinXP nor Win7, one of which already had a different brand of SSD.

Other Thoughts: Well... I knew it was somewhat of a risky deal, and apparently I lost. WIll be contacting customer service for what to do with this.

This is going into an existing WinXP PC that I'm upgrading to Win7, so wanting the SSD before installing 7.

I would expect it to not be formatted, but this one didn't show up under BIOS, nor storage management console, and even *prevented* multiple machines from booting at all when installed. I don't understand how it can be refurbished and nicely packaged, but then be DOA... ?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

Quoting your feedback: "I don't understand how it can be refurbished and nicely packaged, but then be DOA... ?" The only likely explanation is damage in shipping. All refurbished drives receive extensive testing by OCZ and our packaging protects the drive in most shipping conditions. If you haven't contacted Newegg for a prompt replacement please do so. If you have any issues at all with the replacement please visit our Support Forum and we will assist in getting the drive setup and working properly.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience!

Kind Regards,

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice drive

Pros: Fast
Large
Cheap..

Cons: I didnt buy 2?

Other Thoughts: Was worried about the "refirbished" thing.. but figured it was a SSD... it would either work or not.. but that was 5 months ago and everything has worked just fine.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Drive

Pros: Got is very cheap and it works fine

Cons: I didn't realize that it is limited to 3GBs. I replaced a smaller drive that goes up to 6GBs and the difference in speed is quite drastic.

Other Thoughts: In real-world use I haven't noticed a significant slow-down from my previous SSD, but if you need really fast write times, this is not the drive for you. For general use it's a very capable drive, just not the fastest

1 out of 5 eggsStay away from this product

Pros: Price
Low power consumption
Low heat

Cons: Speed not as advertised

12/27 Purchased
01/02 Received
01/03 Installed
03/16 Died while laptop was idle

Other Thoughts: Installed on a Dell M6500 which has plenty of speed and power. the drive did not perform as specified by OCZ. It is much slower than the WD320 Black that was previously installed. I purchased this drive to help reduce the heat that was being generated by the 2 hard drives in my laptop. Although the heat issue was better and the battery life prolonged by a considerable amount that does no good if the drive can't last but a couple of months.

I understand that this item is recertified, which means, "to guarantee; endorse reliably". I guess the reliability is out the window.

Don't trouble yourself with this. if you look at past comments they mostly state the same.

Will try to get resolution from OCZ. Will difinately report back the results.

BTW... Newegg still gets 5 eggs and thumbs up for service.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am very sorry to read of the issue you experienced with the refurbished Vertex 2. We have already issued a RMA number and return instructions and will quickly test and replace that drive in accordance with the OCZ Storage Solutions Limited Warranty. I am confident we will resolve this situation appropriately. In the extreme case you continue to experience issues, please contact me directly and I will offer whatever help I can.

On behalf of OCZ, I apologize for the inconvenience!

Kind Regards,

Robert

1 out of 5 eggsWill never Buy OCZ again

Pros: Holds down paper??? When/If it works, it functions like any other other SSD drive on the market...

Cons: Ordered and came DOA, I have had this issue with OCZ before and thought to give them a second chance. I have wasted a lot of time and money trying to support them, Now I suggest that if you want to have an SSD drive that works buy a different brand. Newegg was great and replaced it. Still won't work in my systems (See other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: Not included in the specs, but does not function on Intel Haswell based chipsets This is from the OCZ Support:
"The series 2 model drive is not compatible with Haswell based chipsets. It will not function correctly or even at all if attached to the Haswell Intel SATA ports on the motherboard."

That would be great, but i have tried in: MSI, Gigabyte boards with various "Non-intel" based chipsets with no luck.

I bought a Samsung SSD and used it in each machine that this drive would not work in.

Conclusion: Don't buy this if you want something that works. Spend an extra couple bucks and you will not regret it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

I am very sorry you have experienced a problem between the refurbished Vertex 2 and your Haswell system. What you have been told by our Support Team is correct; the legacy SandForce controller used in the Vertex 2 is not fully compatible with the Haswell platform. Drives using this controller will not function properly on chipsets that are part of this platform, for example the Z87/H87. The drive will function normally on a Z87 board using an addon controller, such as those provided by Marvell or ASMedia. Only the Intel 6Gb/s ports are affected on these chipsets.

Only legacy/EOL drives such as the Vertex 2 and Agility 2 are affected as they make use of the older SandForce 1xxx controller. Drives such as a Vertex 3, Vertex 4, Vertex 450, Vertex 460, Vector, Vector 150, etc are work great with the Haswell chipsets.

I am very sorry for the frustration and inconvenience this has caused you.

Kind Regards,

4 out of 5 eggsGood budget SSD

Pros: This was a great fit for me with a SATA2 mobo in my Inspiron 1764. Upgraded to a SSD + Win8 + 8GB RAM and the laptop responds instantly now.

Laptop contains transient data, so data loss is not something I'm concerned about.

For what this drive is, it works great

Cons: Wouldn't purchase this for a more modern system where you need top performance or where data is critical

Other Thoughts: Good deal @ $110, not sure I would have paid much more

4 out of 5 eggsDr.'s Orders

Pros: Fast, Difference Maker, Added Pep to an old Step

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Very good deal on a refurbished drive. Here is to hoping it lasts as long as the remaining life of the Macbook Pro I put it in.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat except I hope I don't need a warranty claim

Pros: Very fast, worked out of the box, no complaints at all. Using as a cache drive for ZFS (see my other review on the 60GB model). This does extremely well as a ZFS cache in a SAS enclosure.

Cons: The product is fine, but timing is everything. I ordered on Tue and the very next day, on Wed, OCZ announced it was going into bankruptcy, rendering the 180 day warranty useless. I will probably buy the Newegg extended warranty for both the 60GB and 240GB models I recently purchased, but Newegg ought to throw that in, given that Toshiba will probably buy the OCZ assets and leave the liabilities (like the warranties) with the bankruptcy court. That Friday, the well-reviewed Seagate equivalent was priced at only $10 more than this one.

To recap: bought on Tue, OCZ collapsed on Wed and on Fri the Seagate model was only $10 more. Six days after that, I received the drive in the mail.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I am happy. The price was right. I hope these last.
