Keep the capacity. Let go of the lag.

The OCZ Synapse Series is ideal for caching applications to dynamically manage the Synapse SSD in conjunction with standard hard disk drives (HDDs), to provide users with SSD-level performance across the entire capacity of the HDD. The OCZ Synapse Series leverages the latest and most advanced hardware and software technology to deliver superior storage performance without sacrificing HDD capacity. For users craving the performance advantages of SSDs combined with the high capacities associated with HDDs, OCZ offers the first no-compromise approach to enabling high-performance and high-capacity storage for virtually any PC platform.

The OCZ Synapse Series integrates Dataplex caching software to dynamically manage the use of both SSD and HDD for superior overall storage performance. This combination creates an environment where the most frequently used "hot" data stays on the ultra-fast SSD, while the "cold" data remains on the larger capacity HDD (sold separately). Advanced caching algorithms learn user behavior and adapt storage policies to ensure optimal performance for each individual user, maximizing productivity for the most demanded programs and applications.

Synapse Series integrates seamlessly within any modern PC platform, ensuring optimal compatibility along with performance gains. (Synapse Cache FAQs:

  • newegg High Performance SSD Architecture The OCZ Synapse Series, an easy-to-deploy 2.5" solution for multiple drive bays, maximizes performance and unleash the full potential of today’s leading platforms with its SATA 6 Gb/s interface and SandForce 2281 SSD processor.
  • newegg Integrated Dataplex Caching Software The Integrated Dataplex Caching Software Intelligently manages HDD and SSD simultaneously. “Hot” data is transferred to Synapse SSD for highest performance, access, and bandwidth and “Cold” data is routed to HDD for highest capacity usage. No data migration or OS installation required.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Synapse Series offers native TRIM support featured in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Cache Drive, don't listen to the bad reviews

Pros: Easy to install, comes with a converter in so youa are covered if your case has no ssd slot, came in full closed package seem like new never used I think they have to sell them as refurbished for some legal reason, again is cache drive,if you don't know what that is,you have business writing a bad review, just plig it in donload the software and that is it!! for some reason my mobo does not "see it" but don't worry it is working you will feel the difference right away.I have Win 7 and now it loads rather quickly, also my most used games payday 3 and BF4 load very fast,so if you want SSD performance and don't want to reinstall Windows and just want to make your PC quicker buy this!!

Cons: not really if you know what you are doing and what you buy

Other Thoughts: Buy this if you want to speed up your PC and don't want the grueling task to install Windows again along with all the updates, games, files and whatever you have on your main HD

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Way to get Almost-SSD performance

Pros: Increases apparent system responsiveness
Speeds up boot process
Speeds up commonly-used applications

Cons: Will work on only one physical HDD, which must also be the boot drive (though it will cache all partitions)
2 TB HDD cache limit

Other Thoughts: I use these on older GA-770UD3 and MSI KA9N Neo V2 MBs and they result in much snappier performance and response.

Many complain that they though they were buying a cheap 128 GB SSD, but it's plainly stated that the drive is a 64 GB *cache*; the other 64 GB is held in reserve because SSDs essentially "wear out.". Thus, this thing will probably outlast me.

Some people dislike the NVELO DataPlex software and the fact that it requires a serial number. but that's not an issue for me. Care needs to be taken with backups, however: Acornis (along with its Segate and Western Digital versions) cannot clone an HDD that uses this as cache because Acronis does the cloning under a linux kernel. Thus, you'll have to uninstall DataPlex to clone a drive. Uninstalling and reinstalling DataPlex is a minor annoyance because doing either requires a reboot. Macrium Reflect doesn't seem to have this limitation, however, and plays fine with the cache drive.

My system has a second boot drive for my kid's games. The good news is that no matter where they go, nothing on the cached drive can be "seen" by the non-cashed drive and so security is a bit enhanced. The non-cached drive CAN be seen by the cached drive. On occasions that I can't fully characterize, DataPlex must resync the cache drive. I don't fully understand why this happens, but it's notvery common and, as long as I let it do its thing, all is just fine. If the re-sync is aborted, DataPlex must be uninstalled, then reinstalled and the cache must be completely reinitialized thus temporarily losing any speed-up benefit because all cached files on the SSD are removed. This doesn't damage any data on your HDD, it simply re-starts the caching process.

2 out of 5 eggsOnly Half Useable

Pros: SSD

Cons: Still took 38 seconds to boot up Laptop only takes 42 with standard drive. Even though it is sold as 128GB and packaged as 128GB you only get 60GB. Contacted OCZ and they said it holds half as reserve. Then they should advertize that it is 60GB not 128. Think if they want to hold half in reserve they should advertize that capacity.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

What you have observed is correct. The Synapse Cache 128GB has an IDEMA cache capacity of 64GB. The remaining capacity is held in reserve to facilitate performance and software features - the entire capacity is "visible" and utilized by the controller inside the SSD. When properly installed using Dataplex the entire capacity becomes hidden while it functions as a cache to your traditional HDD.

As far as startup performance, while not the main feature or advantage of a Synapse Cache setup, it will increase over time. After a week of use and 6-10 restarts it should start to speed up.

Thank you for sharing your feedback!

Kind Regards,

OCZ Storage Solutions Support

2 out of 5 eggsread the fine print

Pros: it's an SSD, and it's fast too!

Cons: watch out for the fine print on this one, 64GB out of 128GB (50%) is dedicated to space that you can't use!!!
and no SATA cable comes with!!!

Other Thoughts: just know what you are buying, and just not cuz it's on discount...

5 out of 5 eggsSpeeds Up Three-Year-Old PC

Pros: This device can speed up your PC without having to migrate your OS or reinstall your applications. It is a cache for your hard drive that works without any intervention on your part. I installed it on a three-year-old HP PC, and the performance improved greatly. It took about 20 seconds off the reboot time. Logins are four time faster. Launching a program is four to eight times faster. (All times after a brief caching phase.) Although refurbished, it looked brand new.

Cons: There are no cables. You need a SATA data cable. If your PC has IDE power connections only, you need an IDE to SATA power adapter.

Other Thoughts: Those reviewers who complain about the SSD size are not using the device correctly. Once the Dataplex software is installed, you don't even see the device as a drive. It just works - you don't need to move any files.

4 out of 5 eggsInteresting Tech

Pros: Really increases productivity of current drives. Once I read the details of what I received, it made perfect sense.

Cons: I did not realize this was strictly a caching drive, so it was a shock when I first installed it. I tried to set it up with a 3TB drive and it only can cache 2TB worth. It only reads half of the memory as usable (the other half is only cache).

Other Thoughts: Read Carefully the description before you buy. I can see why the drive tends to be returned more than others (I want to see everything that is on my drive).

5 out of 5 eggsCompletely Spoiled

Pros: Absolutely incredible drive. Makes my rig lightning fast. Ive become so accustomed to it i get irritated at any other computer with regular loading speeds. This drive should be utilized with any rig containing a HDD.

Cons: Only works as a cache drive with the HDD containing your operating system.

Other Thoughts: You should understand from the beginning that this is not intended by normal standards as a storage device; i.e. you cannot store anything to the drive directly. It only uses 1/2 the drive storage size for cache memory, meaning a 128 gig drive uses 64 gb for cache storage for your most frequently used programs. the other 1/2 of the drive is dedicated to the dataplex software which, once you reach the max capacity of the cached storage available, releases the least used stored data to the HDD so to speak. it is truly amazing to have 64 GB of solid state speed, constantly recycled data at your fingertips at a fraction of the cost of a SSD with true storage capability. OCZ has found a lifetime customer here. thanks!!

1 out of 5 eggsThis piece is a Cassandra

Pros: Update on my review under N/A; dated 4-1-2013...Looks like an SSD...

Cons: Buggy, buggy, buggy software! Get ready for adventures in computer repair, and make sure you have a reliable backup and all your repair tools (including boot repair tools and operating systems repair tools) handy.

Other Thoughts: My first foray into SSDs.. The SSD (updated firmware to v.2.25) appears to work all right; but the Nevlo Dataplex software v. does not "play nice" with a 1 terabyte boot drive and having a 500GB storage drive at the same time. Starts working fine; but after a few boots; boots hang and/or the storage drive isn't identified in Windows, (replaced all Sata cables - Both drives pass all extended SMART tests) it eats the MBR, boot BCD and generally reeks havoc on the Windows operating system files.. I've spent weeks trying to get the thing to work properly; but it teases me like a pretty woman.. Works wonderfully for a little while, but you're always one random cold boot away from a repair odyssey again..To my mind this is a software issue. I like the idea of the SSD and will be getting a 256GB one for the boot drive now.. But from now on I'll by having my SSD speed without the dubious software tricks and jumping through all the repair hoops; only to fail again and again. This is not a NEW EGG problem, but stay away from this product....PS: The experience DID increase my knowledge of computer and operating system workings tremendously!

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute garbage. Inherently flawed.

Pros: None.

Cons: Completely unreliable, and if the stupid Dataplex software doesn't load completely on boot, all data is lost. Permanently. Completely. Even in a RAID (all drives are lost). Wanna give up and use it as an SSD? Too bad. Will only work for XP or Linux. Vista and higher hang if you try to access it.

Other Thoughts: OCZ needs to take this back and replace it with a real SSD or give us credit towards one. This is one of the worst tech products I have ever used. Will never buy OCZ again.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 1 day

Pros: Nothing I could check as drive died after 1 day

Cons: Not reliable, Destroyed my raid0 array when it crashed

Other Thoughts: Drive shows up as 64GB. No issues
I set it up and on second boot it just failed. Did not show up (tried on two computers). Sending for RMA. Not hopeful for any reliability after this. I have a M4 and a840Pro and I wish I had stayed with them rather than this
