Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

Ok...it was nicely packaged for a refurbished item...not that that counts. Cons: As the review title states, the ssd is not detected by the system in bios or after startup. The vertex 2 even manages to lessen the bootup process speed to so much of a crawl that I thought my primary drive somehow morphed into an hdd instead of an ssd. You see, I already use a ssd to house Windows 7 and I'm familiar with its boot speeds which is quite fast- 15 seconds tops. The vertex 2 expands the boot process to take 1-2 minutes. I've done some troubleshooting- too much considering this drive should work right out of the box but to no avail. I read the reviews for this item and noticed its perfect 5 egg rating and thought maybe, I too, would be one of the lucky ones. Other Thoughts: I will say that I received the ssd within 24 hours. Truly the fastest shipment I've possibly ever had, but that has more to do with New Egg (whom I love) and not the product I purchased. No adapter needed for mounting in my 3.5" bay. Cons: Speeds measured by Crystal Mark are 1/2 the numbers advertised. I should have measured the patriot 120 that I took out first. Other Thoughts: I am not sure how Crystal Mark tests the drive. If it uses the temp folder then my numbers will be wrong. I have made a junction for the temp folder(s) to a physical drive to reduce wear from updates and other temp files that apps make. Manufacturer Response: Dear Muddytoy, What you have observed is likely not unusual. The Vertex 2, which uses a SandForce controller, handles different types of data at different speeds. As such, different benchmarks that use dfferent data sets provide different results. The maximum specified speeds are achieved with ATTO Disk Benchmark. Different numbers may be seen using a benchmark like Crystal Disk Mark or AS SSD. Also, unless writing a huge amount of temp file data, it is completely fine to leave the temp folder on the Vertex 2. I used this for the boot drive in a workstation that can store large files on the server. This was a tradeoff, speed vs capacity. The speed is worth it. Cons: These drives are no longer on the leading edge. I knew when I saw the interface as SATA II that they were limited on speed. The current generation of SSD use SATA III and are close to hitting that limit. SATA II max is 3 GB per second SATA III max is 6 GB per second. I am also concerned about drive failure which seems to be common with this drive. Make sure you have a reliable backup if used for important information. Other Thoughts: This is a good drive to use in a budget system where speed is more important than size. For under $100 you get a large SSD drive that is fast enough to support any I3 or I5. The current SATA III drives cost at least twice as much for the same capacity. In reading reviews these seem to have a high failure rate. Knowing that it is even more critical that you have a solid backup plan for your data. This is my third SSD and is the fastest yet - very pleased with the performance for the price. I bought this during the 20% off sale. 180 warranty on the refurbished product. Came in retail shrink wrapped box with refurbish sticker on the box. For those that judge by the Window performance index it scored a 7.5 on my machine. Cons: Haven't had a con just yet. My OCZ V3 max hops SATA III received a 7.6 WEI on same Gigabyte x48-ds5 mobo. I have no idea why, Of course, now that I have moved that Vertex 3 to a 6GB/s mobo it has a 7.9 rating. Cons: SATA II is too expensive. I Paid $124.99, The price is now $144.99 with a $40 rebate.
